I'm brand new to D&D, is there a way to play this online with others?... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I know honesty issues might come into play from die rolls, but is there a forum on the internet or something like that where people actually play D&D online? I just moved to a new city and I don't know anyone here but I woudl still like to play this game.

There are some hosted by WOTC, right here:

http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=276

I believe that many of these use the following online dice roller:

http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/rolldata.asp

Which puts the requested dice rolls into a database so that they can be viewed by all participants.

There are many, many other RPG message boards where play-by-post games are allowed, including http://www.garicscity.com/ . Many of these include special PHP script that allows you to put self calculating dice rolls into your post

eg d20+2

Which is then there for all to see, including the DM. You can restrict the ability to edit/delete posts which prevents cheating by trying to edit the dice results or posting several times then deleting the poor results...

I prefer the "dice in posts" method over the database dice rollers.

WebRPG at: webrpg.com

And not just WotC games are available. I mistrust any online resource that is provided by a publisher.

There's also IRC. It's fairly easy - everyone get in a room, have the DM be the op, and if necessary voice the PCs and set it to +m so people can come in and watch but not disrupt. Dice rolls can be easily achieved through a bot (on some servers, eg Darkmyst, dice-rolling bots are implemented as part of their services). It's faster than a forum and if the DM is the only op you can smack the PCs out of the room for a moment or use private messages to talk it out if they play up, but you have to get to grips with IRC, you'll have to find people to play first and often it's difficult to get many people online at the same time (Hell, I'm an Australian trying to schedule games for Americans in three different time zones).

I'd go with the forums first, but IRC is always an option.

I am curious about this one, I might actually consider this as an option. How could I write a bot which would act as an dice-roller? And about that Darkmyst - is it free, as most servers, or..?

It's free, yeah. If you can really be bothered, take a poke about irc.darkmyst.org and check out the GameServ. If you can't, here is me setting it off for no reason*:

<Ettin> HEY GAMESERV YOU *****
<Ettin> `roll 1d20+4
<GameServ> Ettin rolled 1d20: 13 <Total: 13(+4) = 17>

And I don't know how to actually code a bot, but you could probably find a lot of bots online. It's not hard.

* Swearing at the bot is not necessary.

I've actually written a bot for IRC that does dicerolls & calculates modifiers as well. It also features multiple dierolls, statistic rolls & skillchecks. If anyone is interested just drop me a line :) and I will zip it and mail it to you. IRC Dicefun for free! :D
