so i need help (and lots of it)

this is my very first champaign, and I'm trying to learn the ropes. I feel like I'm doing fairly well. Having said that however, I NEED HELP!

So my character is a Killoren Druid 3/Sorcerer 3, and I don't want to stand in the back and sling spells!!! I know my character isn't cut out for front line fighting, but I want to know if there are any alternative effective battle tactics some of you seasoned players know of that could help me out. My character almost died during our last session. We were fighting in "The Champions Games" and this guy on horseback galloped up to me and with only a few whacks almost killed me :weep:. I want to be able to hold my own hand to hand. So please some advice whether it be battle strategies, armor sets, weapon/magic weapon ideas, good feats for my next level, or great spells that will help me out (whether offensively or defensively) please share!!! I want to be the best player I can be :plotting:

(also please excuse any poor grammar or spelling errors.:P )

thanks for any help in advance,
Tok

Well, if you're not interested in sitting in the back, my suggestion is that you cast several druidic and sorcerer-ic buffing spells on yourself, wildshape into an animal that's good for dealing melee damage, and start wreaking havoc. Take the Wildshape Casting feat (or whatever it's called), and you can start blasting and cursing from the heart of melee, too.

. . .I want to be able to hold my own hand to hand.

Then you shouldn't be playing a druid/sorceror.

Druids have terrible armour and mediocre hit points. Sorcerors can't use ANY armour, and have absolutely pitiful hit points.

You're character is extremely easy to hit, has extremely low health, and is therefore extremely easy to kill. He shouldn't be fighting hand to hand!

If you are determined to make him effective in hand to hand combat, there are things you can do. But at least for the next few levels, you are going to continue to suck at hand to hand combat.

Once you become a 5th level druid, you can wild shape. Then you'll be good at hand to hand combat. Until then, there isn't much you can do.

Buffing spells, like mage armour, bull's strength, mirror image, can help you survive in combat, but you're still not going to be nearly as effective as a fighter or barbarian.

The feat is Natural Spell. And if you want to keep advancing both sorcerer and druid spellcasting you might want to take a look at the Arcane Hierophant from Races of the Wild.

Natural Spell is the name of the feat and its just in your Players Hand Book

It allows you to cast while shifted.

thanks yall (i really appreciate your advice)

i'm actually hoping to become a Geomancer (from Complete Divine) but i will take a look at that prestige class you mentioned....

keep the advice coming!!!:)

One more sorcerer level and you qualify for Arcane Hierophant. It's a PrC from the Races of the Wild sourcebook that lets you improve your druidic spells and your arcane spells at once. I think that'd really suit your current character since you're already half druid and half sorcerer.

I second the suggestion. It would be great with Natural Spell, in a few levels you could sit around as a hulking ape throwing out spells left and right.

I think this would satisfy your need to get up front as well as make you an effective caster.

Geomancer would not utilize the full potential of your current build.

as other have mentioned arcane hierophant is right up your alley, but you need one more caster level... IMO it is mystic theurge time for one level, then go into arcane hierophant.

You may also wnat to take the green bond/nature bond feat(which ever one improves your companion. You will also want natural spell feat, and maybe practised spellcaster a couple times 1 for sorc, 1 for druid.

once you are an super buffed ape with super buffed companion familiar you will more than hold your own in melee.

All I need to say, is share spell + Tenser's Transformation + Companion Familiar + wild shaped druid, is a whole mess of melee whooping.

Doesn't qualify for mystic theurge.

That arcane class is sorc not wizard. They're a level later for mystic theurge.

lmao, I am such a noob. yeah, not sure what I was thinking... well actually I am sure... I was thinking hey you need 2nd level arcane spells for arcane hierophant, but you only need to be level 6 for MT.

So yeah get your level of sorceror then move on, but thos feats I recommended are still good for you.

thanks for all the advice you guys!!!! it really set my mind going!!!

great list of feats too!!!

unfortunately i don't qualify for arcane heirophant because I'm lawful neutral!!! It really is an interesting prestige class though....one I might use in a future champaign.

i think i may purchase a belt of healing (MIC) and prepare Updraft......so if i get in a sticky situation during the games.....i can remove myself from combat (well at least hand to hand) and heal myself. then as i float back to the ground i can sling some spells and make some widows :ghosted: !!!!

If your a Druid why didn't you charm the Horse or use other spells to take away his advantage? You got the whole Druid spell list at your disposal-use it.

The wild shape is a good idea but for now use buffs with sorc and then produce flame with druid will put you good in melee. It's one of the best 1st level spells.

The great thing about produce flame is that it is a ranged spell until you get caught in melee, then it becomes a melee spell!

Need a light source, Produce flame. Need a ranged weapon, Produce flame. Need a good melee attack, Produce flame.

If you don't want to sling spells, a Druid/Sorceror is about the wrongest way you can go. All the buffing in the world won't change the fact that you're a dualclass caster.

Rather than try and polish a car you don't want to drive, buy a new car instead!

How about speaking to your DM, telling him you don't like the style of your character, and asking if you can rejoin the game as a Barbarian instead?

i reeeeeeeeally love my character though....and i do love the magic aspect of it, and spell slinging.....i just want to make the best of it......because no matter how far away you stand there's probably gonna be a point when you have to engage in hand to hand.........

besides i'm playing a barbarian in our Ebberon champaign.......:D

First, the extreme suggestions:

Ever heard of the Duskblade? You get full Bab, Armor, and a good selection of offensive spells, and a decent handful of untility spells. It's in the PH2, along with the rules of character rebuilding. Perhaps you can convince your DM to allow you to rebuild your character instead of starting a new one.

Rebuilding as a Psywar could also work, though you'd have to take Expanded Knowledge to get access to some real "spell slinging" with that class. But at least you wouldn't need to buy the PHII.

Now the more conserative suggestions:

The problem with the Geomancer class is that it requires divine and arcane spellcasting to get into, but unlike the Mystic Thurge, it only progresses one at a time. Since you're several levels behind in spellcasting already, I suggest focusing completely on increasing your druid casting since your druid casting will progress faster and give you access to a lot more spells. Stick to untility spells with your sorcerous spellcasting, and pick the ones that give you the most bang for your low caster level buck. Spells like True Strike, Mage Armor, Invisibility, See Invisibility, Shatter, Silent Image, and Grease are all effective even with a low caster level.

well as an Arcane+Devine spellcaster you should be on the back, you can use your devine spells to aid people and your arcane to fight, think about a tactic, write your battles and think how you could get better+stay out of metagaming!

wow, over-react much?

metagaming? can someone explain this term to me?

It is when your character makes an action based on knowledge the player would have and not your character, the classic example is a character using fire/acid on a troll, when the character has never seen nor heard of a troll prior to the encounter, because the player knows trolls are vulnerable to acid/fire
