| jokerswild02-28-07, 07:40 PM | First off let me explain the back story. My regular DM and another DM who runs on Friday are running a Good vs. Evil campaign. They split the gameing group up between half good and half evil. I managed to get on the evil team (which I wanted just for a change of pace). What I'm wondering is there anyone who has ran/played in a evil campaign who can give me some ideas as to what a CE character should do. What I am playing as is a pally of slaughter from Unearthed Arcana so keeping to my alignment is very important (as is for all pally's) any advice is very welcome. |
| Ian031102-28-07, 07:57 PM | Chaotic evil characters act on their whims, often violently and erratically. And, of course, all those that are good are either your enemies, pawns to be used for your character's gain, or dead. However, the chaotic nature of your character would also lead to him rarely staying in any situation that he doesn't like for very long. Advice? Chaotic Evil characters are will to screw people over on a whim if it helps them, but they do know some loyalty to some people... |
| Aerunation02-28-07, 07:59 PM | It would almost seem as if a paladin of slaughter wouldn't be able to function. It would be a very short lived career. |
| Dei02-28-07, 08:32 PM | Q: What should you do? A: You're CE, you should do whatever you can get away with. In all seriousness though come up with a motivation for the guy's evil. Perhaps he hates the purity and goodness represented by most of the elven pantheon and so aims to cause as much damage to their worshipers and clergy as he can. Perhaps he was once a loyal member of the Church of Tyr until he found himself betrayed by them and turned against them, aiming to slaughter them wherever he found them. Playing a flat out murderous sociopath is easy but will likely result in a short and very confused campaign, playing a murderous sociopath with a motive? That's a little more achievable for everyone concerned. I find it best to basically play them as you would a good character, they're still human/elven/dwarven/"insert appropriate race", they still have wants, needs, etc, they're just a little different in how they go about achieving these needs than others. |
| danielinthewolvesden02-28-07, 08:44 PM | I am going to tell you that PvP games nearly always end in hard feelings. This is a very bad idea. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-28-07, 08:58 PM | Well, currently, I am playing in an evil campaign... (I am a newb (at DnD, not RPing...) though, so take my advice to whatever extent you may...) My character is a Semi-Demon, Anti-Paladin (basically, a less powerful blackgaurd) My character's role in the party is: Tank (I suggest this for beginners in the CE field) How I RP my character: Normally, I just charge into battle, as my character, being a demon, has an insatiable thirst for blood. If something happens to me (I get hurt, I am accidentally polymorfed, etc...) I threaten to brutally (although nonlethally) beat the person who can help me, until they're a bloody pulp, unless they help me. If I don't like a character, my character will randomly attack them. If I just am bored, I randomly attack innocents. Intimidate checks to shopowners normally force them to give me what I want without paying for it, or just randomly mugging people for money. So, basically, act on a whim. Whatever you want, do. Then, and there... (works for my personality as well) |
| Callista02-28-07, 09:17 PM | Remember that CE does not equal "stupid". You'll do things for your own benefit; but if you can't get away with them, you'll back off. Robbing the guy at the general store for trail rations and the money in the till? Go for it. Robbing the high-level mage who's selling magic items? Not unless you want to be burned to a crisp. Killing a random traveler on the road? Yep. Killing a random commoner in the city? Not unless you think you can take on the squad of guards who'll track you down--especially if the city's big enough for them to hire a decent diviner. All in all, CE is about doing what you want, yeah; but you've still got limitations. You want to keep your own skin in one piece, so you don't generally do stuff that you know will get you killed or put in prison. If you can get away with it, you'll do it; but you're not stupid. Anyone who wants to control you has to be more powerful than you; if you want to control someone else, you'll assume you've got to overpower them first. It's all about finding out how to do unto others without also letting them do unto you! CE characters can have friends. The party represents those friends... they may like, love, or just tolerate them; but CE characters know they need people to protect their backs. All the better if those people can be manipulated or intimidated if necessary... though many CE characters find that it's in their own best interests to keep up decent relationships with their party members. After all, your party members are the ones who can heal you in battle or else let you die; and if they want, they can kill you while you sleep. An evil party has an understanding: We need each other; I won't slit your throat because I know that you know it's not to your best interests to slit mine. As long as that balance of power can be maintained, as long as all the party members believe they know where they stand and that no one else benefits from killing them, then the party can work out. |
| RuckusFox02-28-07, 10:58 PM | You're Chaotic Evil? Kick a bag of puppies into a river every now and then. Do things that benefit you and only you. Don't stick up for people. Steal if possible. Hold no regard for other's life or well being, as long as you are okay. Dessecrate opposing holy grounds, etc. etc. The list goes on. I find being "Evil" helps when you are also a creature of the night... :3 Feasting on little girl's blood every so often isn't exactly neighborhood friendly. Because you are evil, you have a broader spectrum of what you can do. Many things can be percieved as evil, where as just a few things might be considered "Indefinately good." So do what you will, don't go overboard though. Hehe. :3 We made our own little scale once. There was "nirvana, sane, and insane." x3 |
| jokerswild03-05-07, 12:01 PM | Well now its time for a update. This past Saturday I played my Pally of Slaughter. Things went well I killed alot, burned buildings, moved road signs, made a deal with a slave trader so that I make some money on the side. Fed some peasants to my mount (its a Dragonnel) and kicked every puppy i seen (then let my mount eat them). I didn't know being evil was so much fun thanks for the advice guys and gals if you got more keep'em comeing. |
| Mindolin03-05-07, 12:14 PM | You want advice on how to play a Chaotic Evil character? Do a search for the Drow of the Underdark campaign. It has advice on how to roleplay Drow, which works very well for other Chaotic Evil characters. |
| jokerswild03-05-07, 12:15 PM | In regards to the PVP comment the DMs made it so instead of dieing they get teleported away for the rest of the combat. |
| Cromag03-05-07, 02:33 PM | Normally, I just charge into battle, as my character, being a demon, has an insatiable thirst for blood. If I ever decided you weren't worth it anymore I'd just change to a maximized Inflict spell and kill you off. I might raise you as a skeleton/zombie if I thought you were a decent meat shield. If You were polymorphed I'd probably change you into the least offensive creature I could think of if you threatened me instead of your normal form. -not usually a good idea to be an dick to the people you need help from, even CE people know when they're negotiating from a bad position. |
| Orchomenos03-05-07, 03:55 PM | You're Chaotic Evil? Kick a bag of puppies into a river every now and then. Do things that benefit you and only you. Sometimes, it's more fun when the "benefit me and only me" thing count as "benefit us and only us". Especially when you have a couple of villains, like Bonnie & Clyde. I once played (very shortly*) a Paladin of Slaughter. It was a warforged who never understood the concept of life, so he thaught everyone is worth dying, but just not now. *No, he wasn't killed in a stupid fight, the campaign died because the DM was too busy... :weep: |
| jelmore03-05-07, 04:45 PM | In regards to the PVP comment the DMs made it so instead of dieing they get teleported away for the rest of the combat. Then there are no real consequences for your characters; you should do whatever you want. And your DM sounds like an idiot. |
| Dag03-05-07, 11:45 PM | Well CE is a challenge to play and it's hard to give advice on it with just one broad stroke, so I'm arranging my personal advice in different topics on how a CE person should treat/interact with others: 1) With a childhood friend or relative: Kill them, take their valuables. 2) With a stranger on the street who asks if you can spare some change: Kill him, take whatever change he has managed to hoarde then hack his ragged remains up into dog chow. 3) With a dog who comes to feed on the beggar's remains: Kick it square in the teeth with your steel toed boots then proceed to take the dog's head off with a hack saw. 4) With a cute and fuzzy bunny: Grab it by the hind legs and swing it as hard as you can and as often as you can into a tree or brick wall. Giggle and grin with the sound of every bone-snapping impact. 5) With your party members: All of the above are acceptable practices with fellow party members. Remember, they are controlled by other players so their death is far more personal to the players; so it is imperative that you be creative and make their demise something that will be talked about for years in the lore of your gaming group. Side note: Some chaotic evil people like to make their killings last longer, so you can substitute slaying the above examples with abducting and torturing them to death over a week or longer; it's all good in your mind. Hope this helps. Have fun. |
| jeffseadot03-06-07, 12:08 AM | The first campaign I ever ran was an evil one. The players, for the most part, were more interested in doing traditional D&D stuff (killing monsters, looting, etc.)... they just wanted to be evil while doing it. This was working out fairly well, but I decided that if the group was going to be evil, I wanted them to do genuinely evil things. To that end, I designed a new magic item called the Cloak of Tortured Flesh and put the players in charge of kidnapping the 13 children necessary to make the thing. Honestly, I think I was the most uncomfortable person during that session, so I went back to letting the group slaughter paladins. Good times. |
| Dunsel03-07-07, 05:00 PM | Are you in an evil campaign or an EVIL:evillaugh campaign? What some people consider evil is pretty mild compared to real evil. If you are in an EVIL campaign, watch your back and, of course, trust no one. Evil is: Murder Rape Torture (debateable) Poison (also debateable) Etc. I assume the evil and good characters will meet at some point and battle. Cool, but getting there with a truely evil party is far more difficult than surviving in a good party. Enjoy |
| jokerswild03-08-07, 01:58 AM | yeah the parties will tangle later on right now its kinda a race to see who gets to a certain location. |
| Terraneaux03-08-07, 02:53 AM | Dude, you shoulda gone cleric. Nothing beats the joy of playing a totally dastardly cleric. You get to be evil *and* self-righteous. |
| jokerswild03-08-07, 10:30 AM | Oh I have a cleric as a back up character he is a cleric of nerull with lots of feats from leabris mortis and he took the undead leadership feat and has a goliath ghast cohort. Its kinda sick the way I made him. All his undead are super tuff. The DM's limited the leadership feats to the point that we are only aloud a cohort. That means no mass armies of undead /sigh I really wanted to do that thats why i made the cleric. Because undead leadership doesn't figure into the number of undead you can control as per the control undead spell/ability. |
| sythspawn03-08-07, 03:24 PM | Wouldn't an evil paladin be Lawful evil? |
| jokerswild03-08-07, 03:36 PM | paladin of slaughter is from unearthed arcana and is CE. There is also 2 other variant paladin classes a CG paladin of freedom and a paladin of tyranny which is LE. They all have variant abilities such as auras and what not. I still think they should make a neutral paladin. |
| Khisanth Magus03-08-07, 03:41 PM | I personally prefer the non-lawful-good paladins from Dragon Magazine. The LE and CE ones are just nasty...very very nasty...I forget which one it is, but one of those two is eventually able to cast the spell Seed of Evil, which gradually makes someone evil, for free a certain amount of times per day. |
