| Kaishi_Kyouki02-15-07, 07:21 PM | I've been playing for about a week at my local D&D/MtG club, and I have been having a few issues... First off, my character: Species: Semi-Demon Class: Anti-Palidin Alignment: Chaotic Evil Level: 1 Exp: 670 Height: 6'11" Weight: 420 lbs Stats: Str: 21 (+6) Dex: 17 (+3) Con: 16 (+3) Wis: 13 (+2) Int: 12 (+2) Cha: 5 (-3) HP: 16 AC: 15 Equipment: Great Sword (shattered) 2d6+2 Full Plate Armor (+4 AC) Cloak Special Attributes: Wings I am in the middle of an extirmination mission, trying to eradicate a population of kobolds out of a mine. My character is the main tank of the team... but recently his sword shattered when taking out a bridge... Now there are a couple things I'm wondering... Do anti-palidins have any level 0 spells? I am currently surrounded by Kobolds (about 10) with 8 more coming at me... The rest of the team (well, two of them, anyways... the magic-caster of the team is hiding behind a rock, reading...) are fighting off a group of four other kobolds... I haven't, as of yet taken any damage, but I'm being kind of overwhelmed... any suggestions on what to do in this situation? Also, how would I go about getting new weapons, considering my character started off with no money... (thanks, DM)? |
| Kyaran02-15-07, 08:26 PM | Well, a few questions... What's a Semi-Demon? Where's it from? What book is Anti-Paladin in? Is it similar to Blackguard? What prompted you to choose Chaotic Evil for your first character's alignment? This is typically difficult to play and very difficult to justify in a party. Why is your full plate only providing you with a +4 AC bonus? Full plate is +8. It's also 1,500gp, and far above the resources of a 1st level character. This may be why your DM gave you no further money. Those aside... I wouldn't expect a paladin-type class to have spells at level 1. The typical paladin starts gaining spells at level 4. In a situation where you're surrounded, you should retreat to a more defensible position so you can only be attacked from one side. Also, call for your party to help you. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-15-07, 08:36 PM | Ah, well, I'm just going with what my DM told me... as I said, I'm extremely new, and have no idea what's going on other than what my DM tells me... I do know that we're playing in Forgotten Realms... Also, It's not full plate, then... it's just plate... (I just copied my character sheet down) It's what he recommended I have... |
| DFoster02-15-07, 08:42 PM | Getting a new weapon doesn't seem to be a problem you have quite a large group of armed kobolds around. |
| Kyaran02-15-07, 08:59 PM | The only armor types that provide a +4 bonus are Chain shirt and Scale mail, neither of which is a type of plate. Also, your race and class are not standard. Your DM seems to be taking some liberties. I would recommend trying to stick to core rules while you get familiar with the game. There is a complete reference here: http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html I think your DM should be allowing you to learn the rules before hitting you with modifications. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-15-07, 09:03 PM | Unfortunately, all they are armed with is daggers... and frankly, I think that a demonicly strong fist is going to do more than a dagger.... (I mean, the problem really is hitting the damn things... I was able to hit twice as much with the great sword...) Oh, and, adter checking up with my DM, here is his definition of an Anti-Palidin: Must be someone of an evil alignment. Has sworn to fight to the death with any palidin, no matter what. Has the same benifits as a normal palidin, except instead of having holy magic, he has what my DM calls "Demon Magic" |

Oh, and, adter checking up with my DM, here is his definition of an Anti-Palidin: Must be someone of an evil alignment. Has sworn to fight to the death with any palidin, no matter what. Has the same benifits as a normal palidin, except instead of having holy magic, he has what my DM calls "Demon Magic" Hum... so you're a brand new player, and you are being forced to play a game that doesn't even sound like 3.5 D&D. I'm sorry that you have to go through this. Shattering your sword seemed a bit unnecessary as well, and I'm guessing he didn't even follow normal item damage rules, he just "decided it was destroyed". Given that your DM seems to take a lot of liberties with the rules and character options, I'm not really sure what to suggest. He seems to be playing by a different set of rules than standard D&D. I suggest you just fly away. Use those wings and join your other two fighting party members. Fight back to back in a tight formation so that you can only be attacked by a handful of kobolds at a time. Borrow a weapon from another party member, or at best, accept fighting with a dagger. Your character is not proficient fighting with his hands, so he will have less success than fighting with a dagger and he will risk getting hit as he attacks (the concept is basically this - if you fight unarmed without a certain feat called Improved Unarmed Strike, you provoke an attack of opportunity from your target as you swing at them with your empty fist). But that would be under normal rules. I'm not sure what rules your DM goes by. I have little patience for DMs who go crazy and adjust the game way more than it needs to be changed just to fit their fancy, so I'm just going to end this post here. :) |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-15-07, 10:33 PM | Yeah... But what I do know is that it's fun, no matter how skewed it is.... By the way... is there any place to roleplay on the D&D forums (I mean w/ a DM and everything?) |
| darkhunter200702-16-07, 08:06 AM | well as long the kobolds don't have long ranged weapons and theres enough space-you can flu. now about your class and race: your race,i think it's a (sorry the MM is at school) well, the purple, winged ugly creature son of darkness i think.... about the class: maybe but maybe you'r a prestige class called in hebrew "Abir tum'a" means unholy knight....can be found in the DMG book... |
| draco111902-16-07, 08:47 AM | Race is "Half-Infernal," and it does sound like you've started off with a PrC (I think your DM drank a little too much of the happy-juice!) Ask him if you can start over with something simple like an Elf Fighter. You're basically playing a Level4 character right now, in a class that doesn't really exist (at least not until you hit about 6 class levels), and playing an alignment that should really be reserved for people with more experience... |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-16-07, 03:16 PM | Thanks for the input everyone. About the alignment... I am an extremely experienced online RPer, so I do know how to RP, I'm just new to D&D. Also, it hasn't been that hard playing the part of chaotic evil, considering I kill random people for no reason, and with no regards to my allies... I just like being evil.... (Plus, almost the entire party is some kind of evil... (We have 2 chaotic evil [including myself], two are neutral evil, with one lawful evil, and one chaotic neutral) I checked with my DM again, and he redescribed the anti-paladin for me: He made the class, and basically it's just an evil paladin, with the same exact abilities, except some are reversed, like aura of good is aura of evil, and still bends light in the same way... He says that Semi-Demon is a species class... in one of the books... so I'm just going along with it... We had another session today, and we killed off the kobolds attacking us by our team leader (a sorcerer) casting "Enlarge Person" on me, with the kobolds failing their will saves, and running into the lake, where they were frozen by him.... We then succeeded in gathering up the shards of the shattered sword, and mending it, and rescued two teammates... So I again have a great sword, and such.... (I also picked up a metal rod, and 10 kobold spears) |
| hunterc31102-16-07, 07:06 PM | I checked with my DM again, and he redescribed the anti-paladin for me: It was clear what the class is meant to do, it's just, as you said, a made-up class. Considering that there already exist all four alignment versions of the paladin in a book called Unearthed Arcana, your DM didn't really need to do this, but it seems he does revel in making up his own rules and so forth. He says that Semi-Demon is a species class... in one of the books... so I'm just going along with it... The book I think he's referring to is called Savage Species, and there is still nothing called a Semi-Demon in there. Then again he could be talking about an entirely different book, but the fact that nobody here has ever heard of a Semi-Demon should tell ya something. ;) At best, there is a half-demon template, but again, it means you're playing an extra powerful race without any penalties. But some people enjoy that sort of thing - sure seems your DM does. :D We had another session today, and we killed off the kobolds attacking us by our team leader (a sorcerer) casting "Enlarge Person" on me, with the kobolds failing their will saves, and running into the lake, where they were frozen by him.... Yeah... you guys aren't playing D&D. ;) At least, you're playing a heavily modified, "DM ignores game mechanics" version of a roleplaying game that might be similar to D&D. Just don't think you're playing standard D&D. I can understand that perhaps the kobolds were forced to make will saves for morale shock once your character grew so big, but that's stretching the shock value of a simply growth spell, and kobolds are anything but cowardly. Then there's the matter of your sorcerer freezing an entire lake full of kobolds. Um, no, sorry... that's just a spectacular fantastic event thrown in by a DM who has already been labelled and needs no further explanation. I can't find a 1st level spell in existence that freezes a lake and its inhabitants, heh. Honestly though dude, as long as you're having fun, that's what counts. :) Just make sure you're aware that this is a grand stretch from normal D&D. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-16-07, 07:53 PM | (actually, for some reason, being a demon seems to make me quite easy to be banished into the netherworld....) Also, for the sorcerer person, he used a freezing spell on the lake (more like a small pond in size), and they were trapped underneath the surface and drowned... But, yeah, we are having fun, and I am aware of the fact that I have no idea what's going on, and that it's not exactly D&D... By the way, reexpressing my question from earlier, are there any forums that one could play actual D&D? (What I mean is that there is a DM, and several players who make a party, and then start on an adventure, with standard rules applying) |
| Adrian_Crane02-16-07, 08:52 PM | By the way, reexpressing my question from earlier, are there any forums that one could play actual D&D? (What I mean is that there is a DM, and several players who make a party, and then start on an adventure, with standard rules applying) I recommend giving http://rpol.net/ a shot, might be what you're looking for. Some genereal tips: if you're playing serious by-the-book-rules DnD, it'd be a good idea to borrow a Player's Handbook and read through it, cover to cover, to get a good feel for the game. For example, your beefy infernal fist does *less* than a standard dagger, PLUS enemies can attack you if you go in arms swinging, because you don't have the Improved Unarmed Strike feat. Really, it should be on your DM to explain at least that much, but you can't go wrong by reading the rules. I've sent you a PM if you want to contact me with questions. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-16-07, 09:07 PM | Thanks alot! I checked out the site... it seems a bit... well... odd... I can't seem to find a proper place to RP... still trying though. |
| Flay Crimsonwind02-16-07, 09:08 PM | I am in the middle of an extirmination mission, trying to eradicate a population of kobolds out of a mine.:whatsthis Okay..... My character is the main tank of the team... but recently his sword shattered when taking out a bridge...Ooh, bad luck. Taking out the bridge with a sword, nice style, bad idea..... alright, so....... I am currently surrounded by Kobolds (about 10) with 8 more coming at me... The rest of the team (well, two of them, anyways... the magic-caster of the team is hiding behind a rock, reading...) are fighting off a group of four other kobolds... I haven't, as of yet taken any damage, but I'm being kind of overwhelmed... any suggestions on what to do in this situation?...... Well, have you tried spitting at them? It doesn't have to be vicious or anything, they're just kobolds........ Take 'em out, you evil killer you :fight!: . |
| darkness ninja of light02-16-07, 09:10 PM | About the alignment... (We have 2 chaotic evil [including myself], two are neutral evil, with one lawful evil, and one chaotic neutral) I'd say roleplaying chaotic evil in that fashion works with an anti-paladin semi-demon, though chaotic evil isn't necassarily a kill randomly, be evil for the sake of being evil, type of alignment. That's why they were saying it's hard to roleplay. It says chaotic, but that usually just means that a chaotic character follows his own rules or dislikes authority. Evil means a lot of things in D&D, very fuzzy (so does chaos but...). Although Lawful evil might make more sense for an anti-paladin, eh, I don't know. Chaotic Evil still fits. I say this not because I don't think you can roleplay, but because I wonder what your DM has told you about D&D alignment. Regardless, as long as you're having fun who are we to judge? It's a different game. As far as online play, I'm not quite familiar with what people use to truly play online, I'm sorry. It definately exists though. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-16-07, 09:17 PM | Thanks.... By the way, My DM wants me to make a new weapon (I have a feeling the mending spell didn't go off without a hitch...) to be found later in the cavern... I'm wondering if there's a custom weapon sheet that I can fill out? As for the alignment, the chaotic evil basically means that he goes on berserk rampages near-constantly, enjoys killing for fun, and would kill the party leader and his companions if he wouldn't be banished to the demon plane for it... A.K.A.: Fun (For instance, in the beginning tavern setting, I massacred the entire contents of the tavern, before flying away from the level 8 authorities... leaving my comrades [who didn't score a 5 in there charisma] to deal with them.) |
| hunterc31102-16-07, 09:27 PM | By the way, reexpressing my question from earlier, are there any forums that one could play actual D&D? (What I mean is that there is a DM, and several players who make a party, and then start on an adventure, with standard rules applying) Have you heard of OpenRPG? It's one of several programs that people use the play D&D over the computer together. URL is www.openrpg.com (http://www.openrpg.com) and you'll also find links to other places that people play online. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-16-07, 09:42 PM | Gaaah! I don't have admin privalages on my laptop!!! I WANT TO KILL MY MOTHER!!! (She won't allow me to get games onto my comp... because... well... she's a mom) anyways... that sucks....truly sucks... I'm gonna have to go through paperwork to get it on... hope it's worth it. |
| Kradlo02-17-07, 01:51 PM | Kid, you need some serious growing up if you're in a matricidal rage over computer administrative privileges. She's probably got very good reasons to restrict what you can download on the computer that she bought with her hard-earned money. Good luck learning about D&D, though your current campaign sounds like it's a home-brewed spin-off with fuzzy rules. |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-17-07, 07:30 PM | Yeah, I understand that she does... I just don't like it. (I also hadn't gotten sleep for a while... (as in two days)) Anyways, enough excuses, sorry for doing that... But, yeah, it's kind of annoying, but I still want to know where I can have an experience of actual D&D 3.0 |
| docballen02-17-07, 09:08 PM | See if there are stores in your area that specifically sell gaming supplies. They'll have Magic; The Gathering cards, Pokemon and Yugioh (sorry about the spelling there) supplies, maybe Dungeons and Dragons books and dice, and maybe board games (both "regular" like Chess and Monopoly, and others like Iron Dragon, Axis and Allies, etc.) Look in this store for a bulletin board that will have lots of cards where people want to start games or add players to their games. The store here in Terre Haute, Indiana is half of a pizza place, and they focus more on M:TG. I've been looking on this site for lots of information (as I'm still new to D&D. ) My folks found a book for my husband that I read and was VERY helpful-- I think they got it at Waldenbooks or BooksAMillion-- it's called "Dungeons And Dragons For Dummies". Don't let the title scare you off. It's a very good place to start. ...but it may make you more aware that your DM is... "unconventional". |
| johnkretzer02-17-07, 11:31 PM | We had another session today, and we killed off the kobolds attacking us by our team leader (a sorcerer) casting "Enlarge Person" on me, with the kobolds failing their will saves, and running into the lake, where they were frozen by him.... Got a question is the team leader by chance played by the DM? |
| Kaishi_Kyouki02-18-07, 12:36 AM | No. The DM was only DMing... no NPC's even... |
| johnkretzer02-19-07, 03:19 AM | No. The DM was only DMing... no NPC's even... Ok just asking |
| Ryusage02-19-07, 05:06 PM | I still want to know where I can have an experience of actual D&D 3.0 As you may or may not know, we're already up to D&D 3.5. You know what you need? A DM who knows the rules who doesn't make house rules in a CORE campaign. With no campaign setting. Just to learn the rules and basic combat strategy. |
