| Ranoutofideas09-05-05, 09:33 PM | Well okay I just want to make sure that I got all the feats am I missing any? and I know the 1 is missing in ranged base attack bonus but, it just doesn't show up. And I know how much money I have to. The things I don't understand is Spells saves, nonleathal damage and dmg red. And what's Temp score and Temp mod. Other than that can you tell me if I screwed up anything. One more thing is can you tell me if I did good with my skills. Like I chose good skills and stuff. Go here to see my character http://www.dndonlinegames.com/view.php?id=21689 |

It can be explained with much greater ease in person (by voice) than by typing for certain. In any event; right off the bat; a Lawful Ranger? If you are a Ranger; In my opinion; you NEED to max out hide and move silently ranks. You also NEED to max out survival and Knowlege Nature. The ability for a Ranger to use the skills with effect is a major separation between he and the fighter - able to sneak around and live in the wilds with ease. You have ranks in heal; however by a potion or two and spend the ranks elsewhere. Based on your feat selection I assume your Ranger will take the archery route at 2nd level? Also off the top of my head (I don't have the PHB in front of me) I do beleive that the Longbow has a range increment of 110 ft not 100. Also the 3e profiler is helpful; but getting out a pen and paper Character Sheet will help you out as well. |
| Ranoutofideas09-05-05, 10:08 PM | it's actually a 100 not 110 your thinking of a composite bow. Also I will go change those stats. And I don't see anything wrong with a lawful neutral. But whatever I guess I will change that to. Oh and I used this only because when I typed it out myself people got confused. I like pencil and paper much more. |

The Wisdom modifier won't be making a great deal of difference to you for some time, and by fourth you will have far better places to put your stat point (effectively letting you now that 15 is enough in Wisdom!) but an extra 5 skill points at this level and 1 per level afterwards really will make a big difference over time. At the first instance I recommend using three of the extra skill points for handle animal and putting the other two into Knowledge skills. Secondly, look to get at least five ranks into Knowledge (Dungeoneering and Geography) and Search to build up those Survival synergies. (Another good reason to swap Wisdom and Intelligence stats.) Thirdly, with 14 Strength (assuming you are going Archery combat style and it looks like you are) try to get a +2 Composite Bow as soon as possible and start gaining the benefits of that Strength modifier. If you are aiming to stick with a longbow then maybe think about swapping your Constitution and Strength stats and so build up your HP rather than have a +2 you realistically won't be using very often. Although a Ranger gets a goodly amount of skill points you never have enough and you won't be able to max out all the skills you want to when you want to. My advice is aim for the synergies and then think about maxing out all the skills you want, those +2s really do make a difference. Also get a Heward's Handy Haversack and at least one Quiver of Ehlonna (by 16th level my last Ranger had four - one each for regular, silver, cold iron and adamantine arrows!), an absolute must for any self respecting Ranger! Aside from that damn good attempt at your first character! Good work fellah! Rangers are complex characters but if built well are not only excellent members of any group but also excellent characters to play. The things I don't understand is Spells saves, nonleathal damage and dmg red. And what's Temp score and Temp mod. Spell saves you don't need yet, once you can cast spells you can fill those boxes in, then ask your DM, until then forget them. Non-lethal damage is where you note down the non-lethal damage that you have suffered. Damage reduction is something you don't have so don't worry about it, your DM will let you know if you get it at any time. Temporary score is where you write your new stat if it is adjusted by magic items or the like and temporary modifier is where you write the adjusted modifier. You could write them there every time Cat's Grace (for example) is cast on you but that is easier just to remember or write on a separate sheet as constant rubbing out just ruins your character sheet. Regarding the character advice, remember that it is just my opinion, others may well disagree, but I can only tell you what I would do based on what has worked for me in the past. Any other questions just post them up here! I hope that was helpful. :) |

Yes. Do that. |
| Ranoutofideas09-06-05, 07:52 PM | right on it. |
| Ranoutofideas09-06-05, 08:05 PM | okay I read the player book and understand about everything but, this confused me. Thirdly, with 14 Strength (assuming you are going Archery combat style and it looks like you are) try to get a +2 Composite Bow as soon as possible and start gaining the benefits of that Strength modifier. If you are aiming to stick with a longbow then maybe think about swapping your Constitution and Strength stats and so build up your HP rather than have a +2 you realistically won't be using very often. But isn't the composite bow a ranged wepon there for I would want to bring my dexterity higher to get a better ranged attack. And isn't a composite bow the same thing as a longbow but a composite just goes farther. |
| Ranoutofideas09-06-05, 08:11 PM | I switched the abilities and just put the stats in ride and handle animal is that okay?? But now my swim and climb suck. |
| Ranoutofideas09-06-05, 08:23 PM | ohhhhhhhhhh I get it I looked up composite longbow and I understand now you want me to get a +2 composite bow which cost 300 and understand the whole strength rating. I understand it so you don't have to explain that anymore. |
| Elrana09-06-05, 08:57 PM | I switched the abilities and just put the stats in ride and handle animal is that okay?? But now my swim and climb suck. Okay, remember to add an extra language now that you have upped your intelligence, Sylvan is a great choice and there are many forest dwelling beings that speak it, it's also quite a nice 'flavour' language, especially for a PC with Elven blood, but it's up to you. Swim and Climb seem to get used a very small amount in my experience. Climb more than Swim, and for Climb a knotted rope gives you enough of a bonus to your check not to have to worry too much about it. I also wouldn't be too worried about Ride at this time to be honest. You have a good Dexterity so you already have +3 and it is a skill that you can used untrained. Plus, next level, after you have put another rank into Handle Animal you will get a +2 synergy giving you a +5 without any ranks, how bad is that?! The synergies from Knowledge (Dungeoneering and Geography) are where I would head, Dungeoneering is, arguably, more important than Geography, but it really depends on adventure and DM and so on. For what it is worth here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=4338242) is the stat block for a Ranger 11/Order of the Bow Initiate 4 that I built who has remarkably similar stats to your ranger! If you are planning on taking your Ranger to that kind of level it just gives a rough idea of what you can expect. :) |
| Ranoutofideas09-06-05, 10:27 PM | Ahhh there we go that looks good. Anyways now that I understand how to make a ranger pretty well and what I should do in the future can anyone help me on my first D&D game on the internet. |
