Ok, I'm new to these boards, we'll get that out of the way 1st. :D Here's my scenario and question:

I have an assassin character that I play on game night. And he's experiencing a potential alignment change. He's sitting on the fence getting pushed in both directions. It's just a matter of time before he falls 1 way or the other. Staying LE or changing to some form of Nuetral or CG.

Here's my question:

IF he changes alignment and is no longer evil, going by the DM's guide description for the PrC of needing to be evil, does he lose access to any part of his Assassin levels? Or would he just no longer allowed to advance further?

This won't effect how the character is played, I'll roll with whatever my DM throws at me, but I was talking with her (yes my DM is a woman :OMG! ) and she wasn't fully sure about what would happen either. Especially the spells part of the character.

I did some searching around on the forum, and couldn't find this question asked before. I'm not looking for any deep philosphical debate on if Assassins have to be evil, or anything like that. Just what happens if he does experience this change? What does he lose if anything?

Thanks for the help!

Maybe an "Anti-Blackguard" replacement class is in order? :D

Most classes that can lose their powers have very specific instructions on what happens when their alignments change.

Monks, Bards, Paladins and Barbarians each have a section. Assassins do not. I don't even think it's necessary for you to lose the ability to advance.

You don't lose any abilities you have gained, but since you are no longer evil you no longer have the pre-requisites for the class. Thus you can no longer take levels in assassin.

Not that you would WANT to anyway. It's not a very good class. Just take more rogue levels.

I don't even think it's necessary for you to lose the ability to advance.
Except for the fact he no longer meets a pre-requisite. Or do those only count when you first make a character? I'm totally making a Barbarian/Dragon Disciple. Nothing else.

Yeah i would keep it simple.

If your no longer evil then you keep the class abilities you have up to this point and you would simply no longer be able to advance as an Assassin anymore.

Which might lead to a very intresting story as maybe the assassin's guild doesnt like its members all the sudden having a change of heart due to all the secrets they know.

Would be fun to play out :D

Well it makes sense that they would not lose their abilities. After all, they don't get their abilities from a divine source that will stop sending it when he has a change of heart. The only non-divine class that I can think of that loses class abilities when alignment changes is a barbarian, and that's just because raging is an inherently chaotic act, so a lawful person wouldn't be able to do it.

Assassins have very deep knowledge of anatomy. That is where they get their ability to death attack. You dont forget something by having a change of heart.

By RAW, the reformed assasin loses all class abilities. When you no longer meet the prerequisites for a prestige class, you lose all class abilities. Fighter using ring of Evasion to qualify for something, Assasin giving up his evil ways, it's all the same.

Now, RAW blather out of the way, I see no need for a reformed assasin to lose any class abilities. The spellcasting is learned, not granted. Advancement might be barred, though. GM call.
