I'm pretty new to D&D, I used to play other games though. Any advice, tips, tricks? I really want to work with an Awakened parrot.

Druids are really a great class to play... I would suggest checking out the character optimization boards... They have tons of "R.A.W hacked" characters (Rules As Written), they can also help you "pimp" your character based on the stats you rolled and what not.

Checking the character optimzations board is the best advice.

We're playing with a druid in our party right now. I find he is AMAZING or nothing. During the game he dominates the battle and is the only one doing damage, or he is in the back not doing anything.

If we're outdoors he's running the show. If we're in a city, building ... small area ... he has a much harder time.
