| Netmonmatt09-14-06, 07:58 AM | I've found SOME, like Gust of Wind, Wind Wall, and Defenstrating Sphere, but wind spells are slim pickings. Does anyone know where I could find a list of wind spells, or at least point me to books where I could find more? |
| Psychoticpsymon09-14-06, 08:16 AM | Nope, but you can make your own spells if that's okay with the dm. Maybe take some other elemental spells and change them to the wind type with some cosmetic changes. For instance, fireball becomes... windsplosion :D You get the idea though, right? |
| Chrono Nexus09-14-06, 08:22 AM | You should also consider a few weather altering spells, like Control Weather |
| Netmonmatt09-14-06, 08:30 AM | Well, I don't think I can alter the element of a spell without the Energy Substitution Metamagic, and I'm kinda a Sorcerer... Also, doesn't control weather take 10 minutes to cast? |
| Richmud09-14-06, 08:32 AM | There is a spell index under tools on the D&D mainpage its got all spells in the PHB and spell comp. Its searchable so it might help you find what you are looking for |
| Chrono Nexus09-14-06, 08:33 AM | Well, I don't think I can alter the element of a spell without the Energy Substitution Metamagic, and I'm kinda a Sorcerer... >_> Ouch. Sorc + Metamagic = :thumbsdow Energy substitution only let's you change energy based spells into another energy... there is no wind energy.. |
| Netmonmatt09-14-06, 08:35 AM | Oh, I thought Air counted as a subbable subtype. |
| Shaw_Coyote09-14-06, 09:07 AM | Oh, I thought Air counted as a subbable subtype. It does. I'm currently working on a Storm Sorcerer, and I have a few wind spells. What books do you have? If you have access to the Spell Compendium there's some good spells in there. I'd suggest Cyclonic Blast and Greater Whirlwind (if your DM lets you learn about new spells). You can also do a search for Spells of the Sky. It was a D&D article on here that I found that I think had a couple more wind spells. |
| Netmonmatt09-14-06, 10:54 AM | Ah. I should pick up Spell Compendium then. :D |
| zae09-14-06, 11:12 AM | Cold could be thought of as a decent form for air spells - a very cold wind. Likewise sonic (a hurricane-powered blast of air), or even lightning (it's *kinda* air-based. Heck, the Paraelemental Plane of Lightning rests between Positive and Air). Possibly try summoning spells (Air elementals). You're not going to find a huge amount of actual air/wind-based spells though. Frostburn and Stormwrack might have a few though. |

Remember, Paraelements are between two elemental planes, Quasielements are between an elemental plane and an energy plane. Back to the OP: I like to look at the cleric domains list for ideas. It isn't always replicatable with the wiz/sorc list, but it can give you some ideas. Also, one of the 'oriental' classes from the Complete series is elemental based. Can't remember if it's the Shugenja or the Wu Jen. (My group doesn't use oriental-flavored stuff. Doesn't fit the world.) Additionally, there are a couple decent metamagic feats in Complete Arcane you may want to look at (Energy Substitution, Born of the Three Thunders, and so forth), Stormwrack should have some good stuff, and the Elemental Savant might want to be looked at. On the other hand, you may want to think about using Force spells (the various Bigby's Hand spells for example) and describing them as being made of solid wind. Telekinesis seems like it'd be a good fit, too. I'll see about getting a list together for you of ideas, and what books they're in. I don't have my books with me at the moment, or I'd do it now. |
| Sulaco09-14-06, 12:58 PM | How about talking your DM about changing the fluff of existing spells to make them wind-based but keep the crunch the same. Fireball becomes a massive blast of exploding air, Magic Missile becomes blasts of wind, etc. |
| Pallin Rahl09-14-06, 01:12 PM | Well, I don't think I can alter the element of a spell without the Energy Substitution Metamagic... That's not exactly what he meant... He meant that you should simply go to your DM and say (essentially)... "I want to make an air-focused caster, but there are simply not that many air spells. Can I just pick up other common spells, call them different air-related names, give them more air-looking visuals (just for flavor, not mechanics), and change their elemental type to, say, cold." So you don't learn Fireball... you instead learn Windball (which is identical to fireball in every way... except it visually appears wind-related instead of fire-related and does cold damage instead of fire damage). Of course... you don't even really need to even change the energy type of some - it depends on how you explain things. Maybe your Windball (read: Fireball) does fire damage... as it's a concentrated blast of superheated wind. So too could you just pick up the Energy Substitution feat and just change the damage type of whatever you apply it to, to cold... and then just give the spells new wind-related names and visuals. ...a well-enough-fitting option. I can't see why any DM would give you a hard time for wanting to change the visuals and names of your spells to give a more in this manner... if they give you no mechanical advantage over the normal spell. Who cares if you call your Fireball a Windball and say it looks like a cloudy mass of swirling air instead of a ball of magical flame. Just make sure your DM knows what spell you're casting when you cast it. (i.e. You: "I'm casting Windball." - DM: "What's Windball again?" - You: "Fireball, remember." :)) As has been mentioned... sonic spells, cold spells... weather-related spells... summoning air elementals - all of these can easily be described as wind-related spells. ...it just takes a little fluff-changing in some cases. No biggie, IMHO. :) --- P.S. If I recall correctly (don't have my book on me at the moment), Energy Substitution specifically lists the types of energy you have to choose between when you pick the feat up... and no, "Air" is not among them. "Air" is not a valid energy type. |
| WayneTheGame09-14-06, 03:03 PM | I agree with Pallin. Unless your DM is a rules-lawyer and/or a jerk there should be no problem with thematically substituting energy type, name and description for spells. Same for thematic looks, there was no need to create a seperate feat for that (it's in FR; Theme Spell or somesuch). Why would you take Energy Substitution, you say? Well, IIRC Energy Substitution lets you CHOOSE to change the energy type, so you can choose to use a "Windball" or "Fireball". |
| Silverthumb12809-14-06, 03:21 PM | While its not a Wind-based class, there was a Storm Druid in Dragon issue 328 that had Lightning, Wind, and other Weather based-abilities. |
| Pallin Rahl09-14-06, 03:53 PM | Hell, you could even just play a Warlock and call your Eldritch Blast "Wind Blast" (unmodified it's an unnamed damage type to begin with) and call your invocations something windy-sounding and describe them in windy-ways ;) By simply changing the fluff of a class you can accomplish some rather different-feeling characters without even changing the mechanics one bit. :D |
| ShadowDragon868509-14-06, 05:55 PM | I would note that you do not need Elemental Substitution if you're not a sorcerer, unless your wizard is going for the PrC that requires it. ANY spellcasting class can research a new spell. It costs some gold yes, but mechanically identical spells with only a minor variable changed aren't going to be rejected by most DMs. If the DM complains that you're trying to bypass energy resistances, remind him that A: The enemy can research protection, and if he still balks, B: that you can lower the dice to a d4. Yeah, if you want a wind-user, research your own new spells. |
| King Bulba09-14-06, 05:58 PM | Ouch. Sorc + Metamagic = :thumbsdow Energy substitution only let's you change energy based spells into another energy... there is no wind energy.. Wind = sonic! |
| Dragoncat09-14-06, 07:49 PM | I agree with Psychoticpsymon and Pallin Rahl, reflavoring can be very helpful. Consider the following as well. There aren't many spells, but they are rather nifty: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20050114a |
| Chrono Nexus09-15-06, 08:45 AM | Wind = sonic! No way. Sonic energy is sound energy. I really don't think that wind can overcome all of the hardness of any object... |
| Comus09-15-06, 12:48 PM | Alright, here's what I came up with after years (read : fifteen minutes) of dedicated study (skimming a couple of books). PHB Mage Hand Open/Close Message *Obscuring Mist *Feather Fall *Unseen Servant Jump Fog Cloud *Gust of Wind *Levitate *Whispering Wind Sleet Storm Stinking Cloud *Wind Wall Lightning Bolt *Fly *Gaseous Form *Solid Fog Ice Storm Cloudkill Mind Fog *Overland Flight Acid Fog Chain Lightning *Telekinesis Incindiary Cloud Wail of the Banshee *Summon Monster 1-9 Spell Compendium: Electric Jolt Sonic Snap Launch Bolt Launch Item *Deep Breath Orb of Sound, Lesser Sonic Blast *Thunderhead Mage Hand, Greater Scatterspray Could of Bewilderment Malevolent Miasma Battering Ram Blast of Force Electrical Loop *Stolen Breath Belker Claws *Fly, Swift Contagious Fog Servant Horde Capricious Zephyr Great Thunderclap Sound Lance Resonating Bolt *Primal Form Orb of Sound *Defenestrating Sphere Forcewave Thunderlance Vortex of Teeth *Wingbind *Cyclonic Blast Sonic Rumble *Fly, Mass Freezing Fog *Elemental Body *Summon Elemental Monolith Complete Arcane: Metamagic Feat - Born of the Three Thunders Stormwrack *Prestige Class - Stormcaster *Spell - Favorable Wind This is by no means an exhaustive list of what's in those books. And it's just what's available for wizard/sorc casters. Astericks denote what I feel is the 'best' stuff. |
| FeceMan09-15-06, 01:36 PM | I've found SOME, like Gust of Wind, Wind Wall, and Defenstrating Sphere, but wind spells are slim pickings. Does anyone know where I could find a list of wind spells, or at least point me to books where I could find more? Go the generic cloass spellcaster and have fun going through the Spell Compendium. Here are some spells I'm pulling from the SRD: Wind Wall, Wind Walk, Control Winds, Whirlwind, Obscuring Mist, Fog Cloud, Gust of Wind, Control Weather. The Spell Compendium is chock-full of goodness, though. EDIT: Okay, not that it really matters, seeing as how I was just ninja'd. |
| David_Roben209-15-06, 03:04 PM | I get your flavor idea here but it may be a bit too restrictive. You are inspiring me to pull out an old idea I had for a theme caster. Go with telekinesis spells. Mix in sonic and wind. There is even a cool PrC for ya! (Master of the Unseen Hand) |
| cog_and_taz09-16-06, 07:39 AM | Wind = sonic! You mean he would swap fireball for maddened-chaotic-good-blue hedgehog-ball?:P Oh, and as for wind spells, what they said. Find existing wind/air/storm/weather related spells. Make up a few with permission, and change the fluff of existing spells(e.g. windball). Also, change the damage type of spells if you see it fit and your DM permits. EDIT: nevermind, I didn't see comus' wall of brilliance/text, good work! |
