| Ricohard_Draconis11-20-04, 08:46 PM | first question what level is this guy? im guessing fairly high. second as a ranger don't spend a feat to get twf just pick it up at 2nd level as your combat style. Thirdly i would swap your con and wis scores around. Yes you would get less hit points but you will have more spells at higher levels. Fourthly What is your chosen enemy? (not that we can really help you on this as it comes down to what you think will be played in your campaign) |
| Shadowspinner11-20-04, 08:55 PM | Well lvl 1 And his favored enemy is gnoll Ill take the rest of your Advice |
| Hochiu11-20-04, 09:11 PM | If you have an 18 DEX, see if you can pick up a chain shirt. With that high dexterity, chain shirts are your friends. |
| Vorm11-20-04, 10:03 PM | If you have an 18 DEX, see if you can pick up a chain shirt. With that high dexterity, chain shirts are your friends. Probably couldn't afford it. |
| Hochiu11-20-04, 11:57 PM | ^^ He may have a really nice DM? |
| Draco Strang11-21-04, 12:50 AM | Ok.....drop the twin scimitars. Please, for me and everyone else. Enough drizzt clones as it is. (humans can be drizzt clones) Stick with your twin short swords....why short bow over long bow? ditch iron will for weapon focus or improved initiative...they will serve you well. Focus on the bow or the swords...whichever style you want to emphasize. Take studded armor if you can afford it. Gnoll is a good favored enemy...IF you know you'll be seeing a lot of them. Most good DMs will let their players know what is fairly common in their world. |
| Father Dale11-21-04, 01:43 AM | He's using a single scimitar and a single shortsword. Hes first level so his cash is limited. Not bad to start off with, but there are some things you should change. It looks like you want to do both archery and two-weapon fighting, and thats doable. But use the free Ranger Combat Styles for the two-weapon fighting feats, not the archery feats. Thus, don't take two-weapon fighting at first level. Take it at second so you can get it for free. Use your regular feats to get the archery feats you want. Why? Because the archery combat style doesn't give the best archery feats. As an archer, you would definitely want Pt Blank Shot and Precise Shot. Rapid Shot and Manyshot can come later if you want. That being said, you have a free 1st level feat. I would suggest Weapon Finesse if you are going to do the two-weapon thing. You have great dex, and you will probably be raising it. Weapon Finesse lets you use your dex modifier isntead of your strength modifier on attack rolls with light weapons, rapiers, and a couple other weapons. Thats probably what I would take at 1st lvl. Iron Will is a good choice as well, so no problems there. For skills, you will get 7 per level as a human with 10 intelligence. Max out Survival, Spot, and Listen. Keep Hide and Move Silently high or maxed out. Don't overlook knowledge skills, they can be vitally important. All three of yours (dungioneering, nature, and geography) are great ones. You can use the checks to learn about monsters when you see them, and you might know something real useful about them. Knowledge skills can also give synergy bonuses, especially to your survival skill. The climb, jump, and swim skills can use some ranks here and there, but don't need to be maxed out--you're not a ninja. And don't overlook tumble either, even though it is cross classed. With your high dex, you can easily get a good tumble check so that you can avoid a lot of attacks of opportunites. Tumble is such a good feat that most of my wizards max it out, even though its cross-class. So here is what I would do all together: Feats: Iron Will, Weapon Finesse. At 3rd lvl, Point Blank Shot. At 6th Precise Shot. Improved Initiative and Quickdraw would be good too. Favored Enemy: I would choose undead unless you know you are going to be fighting some gnolls. You probably won't see many gnolls after lvl 7 or so anyways. You will likely see undead all the time. Other good ones are aberrations, magical beasts, humans, dragons, animals, and evil outsiders. Skills ranks (you have 28 total): Survival 4, Spot 4, Listen 4, Knowledge (goegraphy) 2, Dungeoneering 2, Nature 2, Hide 3, Move Silently 3, Swim 2, Tumble 2 (for +1 total) Skill checks: Survival +5, Spot +5, Listen +5, Geography +2, Dungeoneering +2, Nature +2, Hide +7, Move Silently +7, Swim +3, Tumlbe +5. Starting Equipment: Rapier (instead of scimitar. its finessible, so you can use dex with weapon finesse. does same damage and has same high crit range. Also, does piercing damage instead of slashing, which is good if you are going to use a shortsword too. Always good idea to mix damag types.) Shortsword Light mace (need some bludgioning too) Shortbow 20 arrows Leather Armor Backpack Bedroll Grappling Hook 50 ft hemp rope whetstone flint and steel hooded lamp a few pints of lamp oil Waterskin 5 caltrops 4 trail rations Total costs: about 97 gold One final thing to note. If you ever want to cast higher level ranger spells, you will need to have higher wisdom. In order to cast a spell, you need to have a wisdom of 10 + the spell level. i.e. to cast a 3rd level spell you need 13 wisdom, a 4th takes 14, etc.. Wisdom 14 gives all you need for your ranger, so you might want to consider raising that or finding an item to give a wisdom boost so you can use the higher level ranger spells later on. But 12 will do till at least lvl 10. Those are just my suggestions. Good luck with your new character, and I hope you have lots of fun playing D&D. |
