Well, me and my brother are currently planning on alternating DMing story arcs for a war campaign. Including him, we'll have five characters. Most likely a Dwarven Fighter, a Human Cleric of Pelor, an Elf Wizard, and a Raptoran Ninja. At the moment I'm considering playing as a Gnome Sorceror, (Charisma and Constitution always help on a battlefield.) but we already have an arcane spelcaster and I'd love to play as something a bit more interesting. ;)

Any suggestions for a nice, exotic class?

A spellthief (CAd) perhaps. Hovering between a skill monkey and a limited arcane caster.

Not as good skill monkey as the rogue - although you get some of the flavour with trapfinding and sneak attacks.

Then there's the steal spells stuff, which is just fun and really can mess things up for enemy spell casters.

Artificer? Warlocks are also quite fun. Throw in psionic types for variety (psychic warriors are cool). Wildshaping druids can run the show in a war plus be perfect scouts (turning into a bird is nice).

I'd say pick something standard to start, then add an interesting prestige class to it later:

If you take a sorc, you could try Daggerspell Mage.

You could start as a Rogue, then take Vigilante or Dervish.

If you take a druid, you could go for Warshaper or Master of Many Forms, or perhaps a Daggerspell Shaper.

That's all I can think of for now that would be useful for a ware campaign. What level are you starting at, btw?

Spellthiefs aren't that useful on the battlefield. I definitely like the sound of a Dervish, though. Not too sure about Daggerspell anything, they don't seem appropriate for war, and I haven't the faintest about playing a Druid. (As well as being completely out of place in an army) ;)

Actually, the Gnome Sorceror is starting to grow on me. Good charisma and constitution, and plenty of spells per day. What more do you need on a warzone? :)

I might take warmage later on, Warlocks are a bit limited for me.

Eh, we already have enough militant characters in the party between a ninja, fighter, and cleric. Still, I like the idea of going mounted. Best save up for a medium-sized familiar. ;)

Thanks, all. My character will surely benefit from all of your suggestions. *Goes off to attract a Dervish cohort.* :)

If you're not opposed to a slight change of race, (or can talk your DM into waiving the racial pre-req) you could always go Halfling Outrider from Complete Warrior.

If you like the sorcerer idea and want some battlefield capability you could go with either teh Hexblade from Complete Warrior or the Warmage from Complete Arcane. The Former being, basically, an Arcane Paladin or Ranger (with an artifically enforced nongood alignment restirction) and the later being basically a sorcerer that can wear light (later medium) armor with no penalty, but can only cast blasting spells.

What about being a bard, so that you can buff, buff, buff, buff the rest of the party?

The raptoran ninja can do all sorts of sneaky stuff, with hide, move silently, open lock, disable device etc., and you can do the sort of party face, diplomatic stuff! Also, if the wizard gives up enchantment or illusion, then you can cover him!

Arcane trickster anyone? Gnome, party without theif, wants to play arcane caster but not step on the toes of the wizard...I think we have a winner.

Hm... Actually, I do end up playing cleric alot for the other players in video games. Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles... Still, I need something a bit more area-affecting for a War Campaign...

War Campaign... Arcane Trickster is a perfect example of what not to be, in my book... (And I'm quite sure a Ninja counts as thief-y.)
Still, I see what you mean about stepping on the mages toes. Our usual mage is pretty inept, though, so it might be a good idea. ;)

EDIT: And it's not that I particularly want to play an Arcane Caster, I'll play about anything other than a heavy fighter.
