This is my first post so, go easy on me ;) .

Anyway, my orginal character is a Paladin, I enjoyed playing him BTW. My Dm said that it would be nice to start over at lvl 1, So obviously, i needed a new charcter. I wanted to branch out a little. so i was thinkingg something like, a sorcerer?

Thanks everyone.

Character choice really boils down to what you like to play. Do you want be in melee, stand back and waggler your fingers or what?

I would suggest browse through the PHB and look for something that strikes your fancy, if you want something that is opposite of the paladin try a barbarian.

Try playing a Bard or a Rogue if you are looking for a departure from the Paladin.

You should talk to the other players, to be sure you'll have a well-rounded team. There's nothing like coming to the first session of play and discovering you have three sorcerers and a bard...

What other characters are in your party? What levels are they?

One is a Druid 5/Shifter 10
Another is a pure level 15 Sorcerer
One doen't have a complete character :nonono:
Yet another is a :censored: little halfling rogue 10/Assassin 3
Finally and least, has a ......... well that's not important right now.....*

That's all the people in my party, wll plus me, that makes 4 (we don't play with the last two :) ), we generally have fun :) .

*He actually has a 15th level half-gold Dragon, half-ogre Cleric of deathity Stabbity Death ( :cheer: ) he bases his whole character on Liberous Mortis (Yah, even though he is half-gold Dragon, he's still evil?...) and he didn't even show us the Necrotic Moroon. We don't let him play, we beat him with or DnD books in the closet (after that we threw the books away and bought new ones, the old ones were contaminated :D ).

So the rest of your party is level 15, and your DM wants you to go back to level one? Is the whole party starting over then, or is it just you? I am not sure even the mightiest of first level characters could stand against the onslaught of cheese found in the rest of your party.

LOL, but all of us except the Druid started at 6th level... (including me) so we said that it might be nice to experiance the whole thing. Thats the reasoning behind that.

I hate starting at level 1, start at 6 minimum imo.
I cant tell you want you want to be though, thats up to what you like to do.

Cleric is a good hybrid for heal and melee, if you are in eberron then go corrupted cleric and steal your spells and worship yourself MUAHAHAHAHAH.
Druid has wildshape and spells, enough said.
Wizard is main spell caster.
Sorcerer is a joke but shouldn't be, good if you like to cast things more spontaniously.
Fighter requires alot of planing for a hack and slash to be effective later on.
Rogue has backstab goodness also a skill junkie.
Ranger is melee with better saves and a pet that is to weak to be any good.
Paladin... you played one so enough said.
Monk is hard to roleplay but if you do it right it is kickass. For monks, imo, lawfull = ordered and regimented. Just because you are regimented in your ways doesnt mean you are lawfull in the way the PHB says. Need to talk to your DM about this since some DMs take everything literally and take the fun out of the game.
If you want a REALLY easy spellcaster play a warlock, never have to worry about running out of spells.

It all comes down to what you want to play though.

I would play a Druid, but somebody else is, and Barbarian and rogue and something else. So that leaves the Bard, Cleric, monk, ranger, and arcane people... That's all that's left. I think that the Wizard, Cleric and Ranger maybe..

It doesn't matter what you play, then. A 1st level PC in a group of 15th level great heroes will either die, or get in the way- and likely both.

New PC's should start at no less than one level lower. I start them at the same level (but base eps) but with gear from the DMG table one level less.

From your party description and the fact that your DM is a moron, I'd find a new game.

Oh- what your party needs is a tank warrior. If you were coming back at a survivable level, I'd say go for barbarian. However, if you REALLY want to play with a bad DM and several munchkins when you're @1st level, then play a Bard.

No, He was talking about everyone restarting at 1st level... Not just me! That would be Gertarded to start at 1st level in a 15th level party! Yeah, what I'm saying is... EVERYONE starts over at 1st level, once we reach epic, or half of us die... or something like that...

Well, sure then. Still, sounds like you have some Munchkinism going on.

As to what sort of class you should play? Let me explain- first you need to play a type of character you enjoy, then you should play a class that fills a needed "niche" in the group. The 4 classic "niches" are (in order of importance, more or less) Divine spellcaster, Arcanist, Tank, scout/trap-finder. At lower levels the "Tank" is a more important role, and later the Arcanist tends to be critical. In some campaigns, the "face' or party Diplomat is also critical.

I just had a sit down talk with my dm, I decided to play a 1st. level Chaotic Good Half-elf Ranger in a Dragon Lance Campaign. My whole goal was to take the Dragon Rider Prestige Class at tenth level. I hope that's a good choice...
If that doen't work, or once I finish the PRC, then I thought about taking levels in the Order of The Bow Initiative... thing... PRC ... gah! you know what I'm talking about, the one from CW. And then there was that other Elf PRC... oh Yeah! Darkwood Hunter (or something like that...) those were my goals. I hope those are good choice's...

feedback on this would be nice... :)

I love Barbarians. That natural ability to Rage at 1st level is awesome. They also have d12 hit dice, which rocks. The only wee thing is, that if Lawful is your bag, this is the worst class possible.

Acheron, that sounds like a great character you are working up. I want to know if anyone in your gaming group has Draconomicon?

The reason I ask this is because it has a feat called Dragon Cohort. This feat acts exactly like leadership except that it allows more powerful dragons quicker by lowering the ECL of dragons.

If your DM would allow you to take this feat instead of Leadership, it would mean that at level 11 and the first level of Dragon Rider (it requires an attack bonus that would make you wait this long) that you would be able to choose a Very Young Gold dragon as a cohort.

What is so great about this particular dragon you may ask? Well, he is Large. That means at level 11 you will have a dragon mount and be able to fly around on him fireing away merily with your bow.

Concerning the Darkwood Hunter, you either mean the Dark Hunter or the Darkwood Stalker. Neither of these is that powerful of a PrC.

At this point you may just wish to stick with Ranger 10 / Dragon Rider 10. I say this because you would have to work very hard to enter another PrC with Dragon Rider taking up 3 of your first 4 feats.

I hope that this helped,
Erik

I was wondering about dragon cohort, but never got around to asking. With this feat you can get a cohort with a higher ECL than you, and that seems a tad broken. And I would assume he has draconimicon, since it is the only book I know of with dragon rider in it. And if I'm not mistaken, dragon rider is 5 levels long, not 10.

There is a 10 level DragonRider in the core Dragonlance book.

The one in Dragonlance also gives a cut to ECL which would allow such a great dragon so early when combined with Dragon Cohort.

[OffTopic]Hence any References you have seen to the Paladin/Dragonrider/Dragon Rider. Altough I believe that the Samurai/Samurai/Master Samurai is worse. [OffTopic]

um...er.... aren't you guys getting WAY ahead of yourselves..... this guy is LEVEL ONE... He has a lot of decisions to make long before level 11.

He has feat and skill options, weapon/armor selection, diety selection, dual-class options, etc.

It's nice to have a long term goal, but most characters don't LIVE to be level 11...

your first job: survive!

Make a human Barbarian 1. First two feats are Extra Rage and Extended Rage. You'll be raging like an 8th level Barbarian at 1st level.

Then for 2nd level, multiclass into whatever you want.

For fighter types fighter or ranger is good.
For magic, Cleric or Wizard.
