| Ace_of_time03-13-07, 03:05 PM | I'm a DM in a world where I have change sorc and bards to casting off of spell points. It works just like the psionics power points sytem only I that the spell points regen. you chr mod every hour and you gain full points back for 8 hours of rest. which way would you as players like to use? sp or the way in the players handbook. If you need more info about sp's just ask I'll post more for you. thanks for your help. |
| chava03-13-07, 03:10 PM | I prefer spell points - but I would suggest that you look at the Unearthed Arcana variant - at least that is what my dm uses. |
| Daydreamer03-13-07, 03:13 PM | I prefer the players handbook way. Mainly because its easier to use a system im already familar with, and there are no concerns over balance. |
| Comus03-13-07, 03:23 PM | Switch to Psionics, call it magic in-game. System works better, makes more sense, and cuts almost all the problem effects that spells can generate. And I've played a few psionic characters in my time, so let me tell you - they're awesome. Pimp as all heck, you might say. |
| MasonMurdoc03-13-07, 03:39 PM | I like it I'd love it You seem to get more out f a point system though Not sure if thats good or bad thoiugh |
| Ace_of_time03-13-07, 05:17 PM | I prefer spell points - but I would suggest that you look at the Unearthed Arcana variant - at least that is what my dm uses. kind of mix that system with the recharge spells system in that same book. My world's world random encounter is undead and when you fight wraith on a daily basis the more spells the better. and I all ready have Psic. in my world but players don't seem to like to learn more spells in there mind it is the same. |
| FntsyWlkr03-13-07, 05:50 PM | I understand the reasoning and system mechanices ... it's very similar to "Superheroes" where special abilities cost a certian amount of points to activate. But I would stick with the PHB version, only because it makes sense in my mind as the "character" in this "world" that magic opporates in ONE WAY. Not that characters access magic in different ways(mechanically). |
| Crimson_Concerto03-13-07, 05:56 PM | I've always preferred using Mana or Spell Points or whatever for spontaneous casters. The Vancean system makes sense for prepared casters bot quite to much to me for spontaneous ones. |
| Thubby03-13-07, 06:20 PM | i like vancian spellcasting better. it sets it apart from psionics, and plenty of video games use it (FF3 comes to mind) just fine. besides, most sp systems i've seen completly obsolete psionics (since psions have to augment to do the same damage as fireball, which needs no augment, but costs the same base) |
| danielinthewolvesden03-13-07, 11:48 PM | How many encounters are you running per "day"? With less than the "normal" 4, Psions become super powerful- with LOTS more, the Warlock gets powerful. |
| Ace_of_time03-14-07, 09:48 PM | How many encounters are you running per "day"? With less than the "normal" 4, Psions become super powerful- with LOTS more, the Warlock gets powerful. Normally I ran we skells., zombies, and ghouls. but they fight wraiths at least once sametime 2 time it depends on what I roll and their levels at the time. In the world the natural way of the death is is to turn into undead or good undead fill with positive energy. It happens after 10 days after death. Their is also a big graveyard where most people place their for this purpose or they burn the bodies, but lately this place has been growing in size that no one can tell why. I also have collars that if it is put on at least 24 hours before death it absorbs PC's soul letting them keep their class levels and int score. None of the PC's have taken to it yet but I used it on some enemies. 3level skells sorc. was the 1st. |
| Gamili03-15-07, 12:42 AM | Whoever's trying to feed us the Psionic/Magic transparency hasn't ever read the Expanded Psionics and actually ran the numbers. Psions, with their ability to augment, are supernovas. They burn through power points faster than any Sorcerer can get through his spells and can do their daily pool of damage much faster. It becomes painfully obvious at higher levels. |

| FeceMan03-15-07, 01:58 AM | Sorcerers with spellpoints is a good thing. They're like psions, but they can apply multiple metamagics to a spell. |
| danielinthewolvesden03-15-07, 03:03 AM | Normally I ran we skells., zombies, and ghouls. but they fight wraiths at least once sametime 2 time it depends on what I roll and their levels at the time. . But how many encounters per day before they rest? |
| StoneStokes03-15-07, 03:26 AM | My group is about to start a campaign that has a homebrew class with spell points (very close to the UA version). Everyone is very excited to play that class, so much so we are going to have a thumbwrestling tournament before character creation to see who gets to play it. |
| bob_the_great03-15-07, 08:51 AM | hooray spellpoints. Vancian casting blows. |
| Ace_of_time03-15-07, 10:20 AM | But how many encounters per day before they rest? They keep goint until they need to rest or untill morning ( most people are active at night). I ran 16 rolls at night for random enc's 45% at night and 15% at daytime so 5-8 at night and sometimes a day enc when they sleep.( no enc's in town it is mostly safe ground). |
| Titan W03-15-07, 11:02 AM | Well it's been said already but Vanician allowes for a good mix between endurance and a sprint, while psionics is an extremely powerful sprint-style of casting, with the warlock falling in as the ultimate marathon runner. Spell points fall between the psionics and the Vancian system in their speed of training:damage per round ratio, with ToB classes in between Vancian and the Warlock so it comes out something like this: Psionics -- Spell Points ---- Vancian ------ToB------- Warlock Which is why I'd like to see more warlock like classes like the warlock personally. However your modifications would allow a change in this as for 1 encounter per round the sorcerer and bard could easily regain about 2 to three spells per hour, or more changing the array to something like this: Psionics --------- Vancian ----- Spell Points -- ToB-----Warlock and their damage/encounter works out more like this Warlock ----- ToB ------ Vancian ----- Psionics ----- Spell Points as opposed to the original array which was more like: Warlock ----ToB---- Vancian ---- Spell Points ------------- Psionics Which causes some unusual balancing discrepancies. I wouldn't mind playing with a normal SP sorcer over a wizard once in a while though. |
| Genetic03-15-07, 11:19 PM | We use the Vancian system in our group, and it works fine once you actually learn HOW it works. But to be honest, a spell point system is far simpler to use and learn. the Vancian magic system is needlessly complicated. |
| FrostWolf03-15-07, 11:36 PM | I prefer spell points - but I would suggest that you look at the Unearthed Arcana variant - at least that is what my dm uses. I agree with this post 100%. |
| Novabomb03-16-07, 12:30 AM | Personally I like this system. Bu I am concerned with balancing (Mainly because of the Regen) |
| Ace_of_time03-16-07, 03:52 AM | they have to stop use magic for the 1st hour before they start regen. If they use a spell it starts over. It is mostly for random enc. outside of the dungeons when their DM's rolls count as hour passed by. most DM's use combat rounds in Dungeons so the only way they would come back is to rest 8 hours. If your in a low to mid powered play style it is better to leave the regen off. |
