Glak 05-23-04, 03:28 AM	Well a lot of the wonder comes from opening up that PHB for the first time and just reading it through. However you can download the SRD. It isn't a replacement for the PHB, but sort of like a refresher or quick guide for DMs. It doesn't explain stuff if much detail because it isn't for new players.

Arcuna 05-23-04, 12:07 PM	Well, as was suggested, check out the SRD (there's a link to it in my sig). As was also stated, it is not a substitute for the PHB, or any other book, but it can, and does, help a lot. Unless you already know these answers, you should first ask your DM the following questions: How does s/he want you to roll your stats? e.g. pioint buy, 4d6 drop lowest, etc. Are there any races/classes you cannot be? Are there any DM-designed races/classes that are available to you and you should be aware of? What sorts of equipment are a must-have for any character, PC or not, e.g. Winter blanket if it's usually cold. After that, you want to choose your race, class, and possibly alignment. If you do not have access to a PHB, then going any farther than that would be difficult if not impossible. Just my 2 cp.

Sphyre 05-24-04, 01:58 AM	Asking for detailed help without giving detailed information is really bad karma. I half expected to see a one liner when i opened this thread, seeing someone expect everyone else to do work for him. It looks like that's the case. Everyone else nailed it on the head. I'm willing to bet 99% of us on this forum learned a majority of the rules they learned via reading the book. That being said, if you don't even have access to a book, you can get most of the information you need in the System reference document. I remember that Edymnion has the links in his signature, but I wouldn't go hunt down a thread that he's posted in for someone who's just expecting other people to just be his :cencored: for him and do all the work for him. The SRD (systems reference document) is specifically designed so one can make a campaign, but not a character, although 98% of the information for making a character is in the SRD. Start reading up boy. You put in some effort and we'll help, but we won't do it for you.
Telas 05-25-04, 03:57 AM	When I started playing again after a few years off, I didn't have the PHB or anything else, so I started writing stories detailing the character's history. Nothing extravagant, just "he was born into a remote village in the far north, and when he was away on a hunting trip, slavers raided his village, etc, etc". When I could get the PHB, I already had the character concept fleshed out, and had a good idea how he was going to fight, interact, view the world, etc. Keep it simple, remember, you will probably be starting at level one, which is about 16-18 years old in modern terms. Very few people at that age have a wealth of skills and abilities. Best of luck with it, Telas (edited for spelling)

Steelwill 06-06-04, 07:57 AM	I will help you out too, sorry you received a harsh welcome, please PM me, the link will be in the post at the bottom of the window. That is of course if DrMorganes hasn't already given you all the assistance you needed. Assuming you have the concept in mind already, based on your post it sounds like you still need to do feats, skills, equipment, HP's, Saves, and BAB, then maybe just fleshing out (IE if a cleric, what deity? etc).
