| nightwalker200005-21-07, 08:27 AM | Hi, I think that some of you remember that I had problems with my "realistik" playng, so I don't think that I plaing much better and I still need halp!:weep: |
| Optimized_Commoner05-21-07, 08:51 AM | Hi, I think that some of you remember that I had problems with my "realistik" playng, so I don't think that I plaing much better and I still need halp!:weep: Can you be more specific? What aspects of realistic roleplaying are you having difficulty with? Perhaps an example would help. But lacking any specific questions, perhaps look on the internet for articles and advice on roleplaying. Here are a few that I've found: Roleplaying Tips Ezine (http://www.roleplayingtips.com/index.php) Foxfire and Afira's handbook to roleplaying (http://www.angelfire.com/tx/afira/) Bella Online Player's advice (http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/9600.asp) (though it's a women's info site the roleplaying advice is suitable for people of all genders, some of it quite good). So yes, a bit more feedback on your problem will help with more specific advice. |
| darkhunter200705-21-07, 08:59 AM | LOL, he want me to help him in RL, i can't give the links like this, read the pages i gave it's your major problem. Optimized_Commoner have some usefull links to, take your time and read em' it will take sometime, but you will do it... about the "religion" thingy, sorry if it hurt you, but its kinda' true! |
| green_yawgmoth05-21-07, 10:08 AM | The spelling and grammar in this thread makes my eyes bleed. To stay on topic, what exactly do you want help with? If your question is simply "how do I be a good roleplayer?" then my suggestion would be to just watch a game or seven and get a feel for it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| darkhunter200705-22-07, 04:11 AM | He got offtopic a bit, he didn't knew that "i hate elves" is a sign.... About Darkhunter2007, i'm he's DM (the pain) and i gave him some usefull links to read, but he's to lazy. keep playing those flash games and watch "youtube" without voice, so he don't want to read it.... about i agry, he ment to say agree... P.S:we are Russian who live in israel (both of us, speak hebrew, i tryn to speak English as much as i can to finish English class next year on 7 points for adultship-rate my English+correct me) |
| nightwalker200005-22-07, 04:19 AM | I'm sorry about my grammar mistakes ,but I trying to improve English-it is one of the reasons that I visiting some forums or chats.:( |
| Deacon Liadon05-22-07, 06:31 PM | I suggest that you two stop flaming each other, otherwise one of the moderators may decide to do nasty things to your account. Anyway, Nightwalker, the links that Darkhunter provided are very good, well-thought-out articles, as they focus on the "realism" in games of D&D. Rich carefully explains in each how detail can be used to improve your role-playing. Here's my suggestion to you. Make a character, an NPC that your party might encounter. Not a plot-hook or a quest critical NPC, but just someone who may, for whatever reasons, decide to engage the party in conversation. What you will have in front of you is a bunch of stats. Not very interesting. Next, create a small background for him. Nothing too intensive, just something that says who he is, what he does and where he's from. It only has to be a few words. Next, think up some noticable traits for him. A speech orientated one would be best as that will allow you to feel slightly more like the character if you have to speak with a lisp. Either that or something visual, perhaps he jerks his head, or nods while talking. Something that you can do and your players can see you doing. Finally, think up three things that the character might be interested in. A simple villager might wonder about the city that the players came from, asking what it's like there. Perhaps he talks about nothing but sheep, or money. A child might pretend he's a noble paladin off to fight a fierce dragon. These traits will give you something to talk about as well as ways to talk about them as long as you remain consistant. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but am sure others here will be able to expand on this. |
| WizO_Cat05-22-07, 10:37 PM | OK, I've deleted the offending and off-topic posts. Let's keep the discussion on the topic of the thread. Thank you. |
| UltimateReality05-22-07, 11:58 PM | darkhunter2007The herald has returned! (You gained quite a following, you and your fant...) As for roleplaying, let me see if I get this straight: darkhunter, you are nightwalker's DM, and you think he's not roleplaying well. And nightwalker, you agree with darkhunter. Is that correct? Nightwalker, could you tell us everything about your character's personality and background that you know so far? |
| Optimized_Commoner05-23-07, 02:33 AM | I'm sorry about my grammar mistakes ,but I trying to improve English-it is one of the reasons that I visiting some forums or chats.:( Oh dear. A quick word of warning, the English that you'll find on the internet isn't often... (how can I put this politely)... the sort of thing that you want to imitate. This isn't unique to English either, I've read French websites that I could correct the spelling on and French is my second language. |
| trapspringer05-23-07, 12:22 PM | If'n you aren't from 'round these parts, you should edit your profile to reflect this so people won't criticize your grammar so harshly. We're generally pretty understanding if English isn't your native language. If we have no way to know English isn't your language, we reserve the right to be blatant *******s. The best way to learn how to role play is to actively and consciously do so with frequency. In other words practice. |
| nightwalker200005-24-07, 12:01 PM | I dont ask you to critic my English, I just want you to halp me with my roleplaing, by the way Ineed halp in baground to. Darkhunter building the world map and my storyso I need to, make my baground to not effect his plans. |
| Deacon Liadon05-24-07, 02:59 PM | They're not criticising you, they're actually trying to help you. On these boards you're more likely to get a better response if you're careful with your english. Oh, and Darkhunter, from one DM to another, it's generally not a wise idea to have your players construct their background around your story. That is the path to the dark side of railroading. Nightwalker, if you want us to help you with your background, then you'll need to provide us with a bit more information. For example, what class are you playing, where is the campaign set, anything you can think of. |
| nightwalker200005-28-07, 11:01 AM | I doesn't mean that somebody to criticise my English, I mean that I don't realy want to talk about it, maybe only to correct me sometimes. Oh, by the way, thanks for every body who trying to halp. ;) My problem with backstory is ,for example, if I will say that I was living on the big mounten, he can say that he have no big mountens in his world, or if I say that my best friend died in the last war, he can say that the last war was before 2000 year. |
| Zaver05-28-07, 11:26 AM | Only advice I can give is that since you're new to this sort of thing, make up a simple story for your character. Some thing along the lines that he was a farmer who hated his life so he saved up some money, got himself some gear and hit the road to see what life had to offer. That's easy to roleplay because you only have to be interested in the game to be acting like your character. |
| maharai2305-28-07, 05:47 PM | Wow. This is so not what I expected. There are a few terms that are well known. Role-playing, and Roll-playing, are two words that describe character development and interaction, versus combat optimization, and continual challenge overcoming, without regard for a character's personality. I thought you needed some ROLLplaying advice. |
| Shan_TheBabau_Burke05-28-07, 08:22 PM | For starters, what race are you going to be? That's a good place to start. You don't have to be perfect at it as long as you are willing to try! If you want to be a Dwarf act kind of rude. They are loyal to their families above all else and they are generally obedient of the law. If you decide to play an Elf, act kind of dreamy and snobby. They are artists and sword fighters. They follow whims rather than rules usually. If you decide to be a Halfling they are determined and happy go lucky. They find opportunities that others would miss and are pretty good at making their own luck if they can't find any. If you decide to play a Half-Orc, for the most part they are incredibly dumb especially after the racial adjustments. Those characters are best for fights or situations that don't require social grace. The Gnomes are a cheerful bunch that dress to impress. They show off their wealth with lots of fancy clothing and jewelry. They are fantastic tricksters and loyal friends. Humans are the easiest because if you aren't sure how to roleplay, be yourself. Then, as you go, you will think to yourself, "Maybe I should have done this instead..." And as you think of things like this to develop your character, you will get more and more into it. Then, when you make your next character, you will have an even better idea of how you want to play him, and you can incorporate all these cool things you thought to do with your first character but didn't get the chance to use. The background is a bit harder. Ask your DM for an idea of what kind of areas are on the map. Then, when you know that there's a desert, or mountains or islands or whatever you can decide where to be from. Once you know that, some here will be happy to help you a little more if you want with a background. If there's any of this you need clarified, please let me know. I will be glad to help. |

I'll second the above. Using your race to help you role-play is always a good idea. |
| Alric05-28-07, 09:26 PM | I wouldn't worry to much about that. Most people are not going to pick at your story by saying there hasn't been a war in the last 2000 years. Just make it reasonable. Saying you live on the mountain it totally acceptable. Saying your the prince of a kingdom, may not be. If your really in doubt just ask whoever is running the game. |
| nightwalker200005-29-07, 08:20 AM | I think that if I will play a Human it will not really help, it's not a problem to be myself , the problam is TO NOT be myself!!!!! By the way, how is my English? |
| Shan_TheBabau_Burke05-29-07, 02:42 PM | Your English is fine considering it's not your first language. Your grammar and spelling are better than some of the native speakers we see on these boards. Don't worry about that! If you do have something you want to say and aren't sure how to say it, just PM me. I'd be glad to help you. Anyway! On to the topic! Humans are right out, so have you decided on another? Also, have you rolled up your stats? If you have, let us know your Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores as well as your race. This will help us to show you how your character would act as well. |
| Phrennzy05-29-07, 04:41 PM | Pick a race you like and ask the DM where you would be from. Now you have a starting area. Ask the DM where the adventure will start. Now you can make up your reason for leaving and heading there. Work with the DM to create the PC background. Ask him questions about where things are. That way he can't say there aren't any mountains when he just told you that dwarves come from the Misty Mountain range. |
| PwnageLlama05-29-07, 10:51 PM | I think that if I will play a Human it will not really help, it's not a problem to be myself , the problam is TO NOT be myself!!!!! By the way, how is my English? Readable, but not great. I can not critisize you, as I only know one language myself. Try to think of what you would say if you were that character. |
| nightwalker200006-05-07, 11:27 AM | Thank everybody for the help!;) By the way, does anybody here speak Russian? |
| Shan_TheBabau_Burke06-10-07, 10:52 PM | Sorry dude, I barely even speak Spanish though I took three years of it in high school and have, throughout my life, lived in farming communities that hire migrant workers. Languages just don't come easy to me. You're lucky my English is as good as it is. Have you decided on your character yet? I would like to hear about it and I'm sure some of these others would too! :) Do you have any other questions? Do you need clarification on anything discussed previously? |
| Roivas06-11-07, 07:52 AM | Sorry, I couldn't resist, but don't worry English is the most confounding language appart from lojban [which barely counts] in existance. So don't worry too much about it. As for backstory, simply ask your GM realivant questions to your background prior to game. When was the last noteworthy war? Are there any exstinct races/societies in your world? How common are dragons? And so on.... Just communicate with your GM and maybe the other players so you build a character who is consistant with the world around him and meshes well with the party. Once a background is made personality flows from past experiances, a person whose family was killed by drow would be more likely to exterminate their evil when he can. A wizard who loyally serves the king of some noble kingdom is likely to have severe issues with stealing/killing city guards. And a halfling who was rejected by his own race might harbor a desire for revenge. Just make a character you can relate to or has aspects of your personality engrained into him. |
