| Sarella Starshine04-28-05, 06:02 PM | buy dice, have your friends buy dice. download or buy some adventures. create characters. run though the adventures til you feel comfortable doing something on your own. if everyone is totally new, and no one really volunteers to DM, roll dice. highest (or lowest) will DM for an adventure or 2, then the next highest (or lowest) will take over. this will help you guys learn the rules and the person who felt the most comfortable in the DM chair (or the one with the most devious, twisted (but not neccessarly sick) mind) is the DM, or continue with the alternating DM plan (as that will allow everyone to be players and DM's). dont forget to buy at a min, the PHB, DMG and MM (players handbook, dungeon master guide, monster manual). have fun (the most important rule ever). |

Oh, and by reading up, do you mean that you have the books? A P{HB for each player, One Monster Manual for the group and One Dungeon master guide for the group? If not get them. Read them. Use them. You ought to be able to figure out what is going on, but gettin your hands on prefab adventures is probably going to be your best bet when starting out. And welcome to the world of Role Playing! | Draco Strang04-29-05, 10:32 AM | Buy the core set of books. That's the Player's Handook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. Make sure you're getting the 3.5 editions. I find that websites that give discounts are good. Overstock.com, walmart.com, and Amazon.com are all excellent ones. They offer books at substantial discounts. Instead of paying 90 bucks, you wind up paying closer to 60. Then, read the DMG and PHB front to back, back to front, and upside down. In the DMG, pay close attention to pages 222-231. (Ok, so I'm messing, I just pulled those page numbers out at random). Pay attention to every page. Download some of the free adventures on the WOTC site, and have fun. Get the basics of combat down, like AC, attack roles, to hit modifiers, stuff like that. Once you get that down, move onto attacks of opportunity, flanking, reach, all that complicated stuff. Also, I really recommend shelling out a few bucks (do this as a group) for some official D&D miniatures. You can use the free battlemat that comes in the back of the DMG at first, and then graduate to a real one. Basically my advice is to master the simple stuff, and then choose a few things at a time to work on after that. Since you're all new, you can learn as a group. However, at NO time let a restriction of the rules impede the fun of the group. It is a game after all. |
| midniteprism04-29-05, 11:10 PM | There is a REALLY good starter set that sells for about 24.99 at your local game store. It includes rules a small adventure, 16 fully painted models. And set characters w/ stats and the like for you and 3 other friends to enjoy. Its EVERYTHING you need to get playing for less the cost you would pay for the first core hand book. I'd start there first. Its an inexpensive way to test the waters so to speak. I believe you can purchase it off of this site. On the cover is the picture of a warrior (Regdar for those who know) and a black dragon. I wish I had a link for it, but i KNOW it sells for 24.99 and has 16 figures already in it, fully painted. Its the D&D starter set. Not to be confused w/ the D&D miniatures game starter set. |
