Char op boards but make sure you read the posting rules

I'll just post some basics, assuming your mage is a wizard, you'll want your highest score to be intelligence then constitution then dexterity/strength depending on preference (dex for AC, str for fighting).

Combat Casting is a feat casters usually take (unless the build doesn't need it), Eschew Materials is also sometimes useful if you actually nitpick over whether you have bat guano and sulfur for your fireballs. Depending on what type of caster you are metmagic feats might be slightly different but you'll generally want empower, maximize, or quicken spell. Also unless the campaign goes to level 2-3 do NOT get toughness, no matter how great it may seem (which isn't much).

Generally stick to the weapons your wizard can actually use (meaning weilding exotic weapons that you think would be awesome RP will not liekly be a good idea unless you have feats to spare).

Pick up utility spells and generally aviod being just a "blaster", you can still pick up fireball, etc. but there are better 5th level spells then cone of cold ('cough' polymorph 'cough'). Some good spells are color spray, sleep, true strike (depends if you fight a bit), charm perosn, glitterdust, scorching ray, invisiblity, fly, fireball/lightning bolt (pick 1), Evard's tentacles (not exact name but you'll see it), polymorph, etc. i could go on but higher level spells are a bit harder to gauge.

NOTE: Above is all Players Handbook/Core, if you have other sourcebooks you'll prob want CharOp boards

I'll disagree with happy on a few things. Skill Focus: Concentration is better than Combat Casting, since it applies in more situations (like when you're taking damage).

Metamagic feats are only worth it once you're high enough level that you can use them without wasting your highest level spell slots. So levels 8+, at the earliest.

I know it is unorthodox but go with Toughness for a feat. The extra hit points help and every wizard gets hit eventually.

Dwarves already get +1 hp/level; another 3 won't make a big difference above level 2,3.

I would actually recommend improved toughness. Instead of adding 3hp it adds one hp per level

I don't believe Improved Toughness would be better in this case because if its a low level campaign toughness will usually outclass it and if its a high level campaign you can replace it by just hanging back a bit and using smart tactics, as opposed to a feat slot that may keep you on your feet for 1 round more tops.

Also if improved toughness is allowed=non-core=better wizard feats out there.

"another 3 won't make a big difference above level 2,3." It will make a difference, a difference of 3 more hit points and I don't care what level a character plays a wizard at, they usually get hit at one time or another and every hit point counts and can spell the difference between life and death.
