Hey guys (and girls),
my dm has just told me to draw up a new character just in case my lvl2 char that was in prison for months dies. This is a highly likely event as now that he is out of prison and found the old group, he is about 8-10 lvls lower than the rest. Now ive been given complete control of this character with the only catch's being that my dm wants a goodly character either from a differant plane or one that has travelled to another plane and now back again. ive rolled the stats already (17 15 15 15 11 11) and im thinking of doing a fighter with maybe a lvl of barbarian. I can have any race i want (aasimar, tiefling, half-bloods etc.) and any class i want, now the other problem i face is one of my fellow pc's. No matter wat he does, his character always ends up being a tank, with the most attacks, damage etc., and i would just love to knock him off his pedastil. any and all help will be greatly appreciated. P.S. my dm has said to start at lvl3.

The rest of the party is level 10+ and your DM wants you to make a level 3 character cause he thinks your level 2 PC will die?

Or did you mean level 13?

If going for a fighter, try the Spiked Chain, Trip Fighter.

Very powerfull, and with a single level of Barbarian for movement, rage and hitpoints (make your FIRST level the Barbarian level to max out the d12 instead of the d10, the extra 2 hitpoints helps), it can be very cool.

Essential feats:

Combat Reflexes
EW Prof: Spiked Chain
Weapon Focus Spiked Chain
Combat Expertise
Improved Trip

Other good feats:

Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, Whirlwind (may have to limit your Armor)
Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave
Improved Disarm (already have Combat Expertise)

Okay, if the other PC who you "want to knock off his pedastel" is a fighter, then them's the breaks, man. You can't reasonably resent another player for having a role in the party, and dealing damage is by far not a measurement of how good a character is.

Don't play with the intention of trumping a character who is only doing what his class allows, that's just petty. If you want to do damage, be a fighter, if not, then deal with it.

Sorry to sound so rude, but this is a team game, and trying to knock another player "down a few pegs" would seem disruptive to me. Furthermore, this game isn't about dealing the most damage, it's a roleplaying game. While some campaigns are very hack and slash, high powered games, it still is about teamwork.

I also found the fact that your DM wants you to make a level 3 toon confusing when the rest of the party is 10-12. I understand that you probably earned your character into prison, and probably your own death, but just for sheer game balance purposes, you shoudl be allowed to roll up a level 10 character. If the DM is worried about you not 'earning' level 10, you can just not start off with any magic items or money. If the DM is still concerned about it, you need to inform your DM that you will not have any fun while the other level 10-12s are monopolyzing all the action. Hell, I would refuse to play without being brought up to party level. I mean which is more important: party balance and fun, or 'earning' your level?

If you are patient enough to take the long road to "ULTIMATE COSMIC POWER!!!!" then wizard is definately the way to go. Pick up only PrC's that have full spellcasting progression.

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up already...try the character optimization boards. They can give you a much better answer.

But I hope you do realize that a level 3 character will never outshine a level 10+ fighter. I hope that was a typo - if not you need to tell your DM that you have to be at the same party level as everyone else (maybe 2 or 3 levels below the median) or don't play. I can't imagine the game being any fun being level 3 while everyone else is 10+.

ive rolled the stats already (17 15 15 15 11 11) and im thinking of doing a fighter with maybe a lvl of barbarian. With stats like that, go for a MAD build. If you're intent on damage, go for something like a paladin or monk...

I can have any race i want (aasimar, tiefling, half-bloods etc.) and any class i want,Aasimar paladin, woot! :)

No, really, with those stats you can make a good SAD build that will have unnecessarily high stats in abilities he doesn't use, or you can make a decent MAD build. MAD builds are more complicated to play usually, but they are beautiful works of art if done right.

No matter wat he does, his character always ends up being a tank, with the most attacks, damage etc.,....aaaaaand where's the problem with this? Do you want to be a front-line tank too? Or do you want to deal lots of damage too? Any class, if done the right way, can dish out damage. What does your group already have for characters -- do they have a healer, an arcane mage, a rogue, a ranged fighter? Do they have a skill/social monkey? Groups work best if they complement each other. Otherwise, guaranteed the DM will find your weakness and exploit it until you dummy up.

well it seems im not to good at wording my posts, ill try to clear up a few things.

-while i would be losing a lvl2 for a lvl3 it would hopefully fit in better. my current lvl 2 just isnt meshing with the group, the reasons hes with the group are weak at best and he is just a really weak and badly thought out char. (he was my first 3rd ed and bad choices were made) this new char is a chance to solve these problems. And as for the problem of being so many lvls below the group we still fight alot of monsters and watnot that give no xp to the rest of the group so it wouldnt take a great deal of time to catch up.

-knocking my fellow pc off his pedastal was terrible wording. The situation is even when we are all at equal lvl's his char. seems like it must be 2 or 3 lvls higher somehow (and his knowledge of 3rd ed rules is worse than mine) and u would not believe the luck this guy has with rolling (weve checked everything, hes not cheating, just an extremly lucky son of a *****) i dont want to knock him down i just want help building a character that would rival his power at the same lvl.

Trust me, this is bad idea and will only result in a dead third level charactor or a couple of very board 8-10th level charactors. Just ask him to start you off at the same level as the next lowest charactor but with the bare minimum xp to be there.

P.S. I speak from experience on this one.

you want to dual wield dire maces, and throw them. Be a sorceror. Take spells like message and protection from law.

I absolutely totally agree. Have your DM let you roll up a level whatever the rest of the group is. If you keep it the way it is, I beg you not too, but if you do, SOMEONE in your group will be bored for hte next 6 months. No point. I know, technically, if yall play this out, you can catch up, but why put yourself or your group through 6 months of torture? Seriously, you should be allowed to roll up at min party level at least, and if your DM wont do this, he is being a hard a$$. There is just no good reason not to.

Build a 3rd lvl minotaur monk. ECL 11. Improoved speed + a charge :evillaugh

You could say that he escaped from hell where he was being held as a slave. This you would give you the whole traveled to another plane thing.

WAIT HE SAID ANY RACE!!!

I would go for a Saint/Half Celestial/Half Asimar Paladin myself!!!!

Talk About HOLY WARRIOR!!!

Since you don't have the HP...Focus on ranged combat and flying! Divine Might feat for 4th level when you gain turning to add CHA to damage! Highest stat should be CHA!

well my dm wants something that can at least pass for human~ish we sort of decided on something like a janni ECL 11 (page 24 planar handbook). I just dont quite uderstand how it all works just yet but anyone with some experience with this sort of stuff i would be glad to hear your advice.

My idea looks humanish!
beevwar

08-02-05, 07:40 PM
yeah but that looks and sounds way to complicated, especially since im already playing a LG human cleric (main character), a human rogue (the one that could die(but now the DM has said hes not gonna go outta his way to kill it, but if it does.....) and a CE half orc barbarian (doesnt get played often) all in the same game. and he wants me to bring in this plane touched if im up to it. this will be the first time ive had more than 2 active cahracters. So simpler is probly better

If you don't want Humanlike, bust out the Sharn (5 Racial HD, 4 LA form the online erratta of Monsters of Faerun) and hit MT. Might need to throw one lvl of Bard in there ot meet the skill pre-reqs but there you go. Cast from 30 feet away and open up their hex portals to touch him. Freakin Nasty.

Now HUMANLIKE?! Ick...1/2 Celestial, 1/2 Dragon Saint Monk or Pally.
