| Antarx11-19-06, 09:59 PM | My group is playing the chronicles of dragolance. Im playing a level 8 wizard, and I have an eagle air elemental (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20011109a)familiar A few days ago, I was victim of a curse so I can't cast spells. that curse only can be removed if I recibe a spell form a 15 level spelcaster, at least. Since at this time, there's not any cleric in dragolance (well, only 2, and below level 7) and there's no high level wizards around, I sent my familiar to the nearest tower of high sorcery, with a scroll asking for help. The problem is that our DM is rolling enconters for my familiar, and he has been wounded. He is somewere over a mountain pass. Now, I'm free from the curse (but that's another question) But I feel the fear of my familiar over the distance (a houserule), and I don't know how to rescue him. My group is traveling in the opposite direction from my familiar. I want to rescue him, but I doens't know exactly where is he. Also, he can fly (100' P) but I don't know how tell him to come back. Any ideas? Some extra information. -My familiar knows the intended route of my party. - In the party, theres another 8 level wizard, a 6 level druid (he doesn't come usually to the session) a level 7 bard, and a future fighter 8-cleric 1 |

| Shaggy_Shaggs11-19-06, 10:07 PM | Wait, you are cursed and can't cast spells now, or you were cursed and can cast spells now? If it's the latter, try a scrying (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/scrying.htm) spell on your familiar to determine what's going on with him. His Will save will probably be good, but he can intentionally fail the save and let you see. Load up on multiple copies of the message (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/message.htm) cantrip to cast through the sensor - at caster level 8th, you should have a 40% chance of making it work, so it should likely only take 3 castings of the cantrip to punch it through and have a brief word with your familiar. I'd prep 5-6 copies just in case, though. |
| Antarx11-19-06, 10:21 PM | We are paling the war of the lance, and the last session, we left Thorbadin to travel to Tarsis. Also, NOW i can cast spells normally. I'm goint to try scrying, but I don't know the spell, doesn't have the focus. Not sure if the druid can cast it, but, in any case, I don't know if another caster can cast the message trought the druid scrying. |
| Shaggy_Shaggs11-19-06, 10:35 PM | Do you think you can reach level 9 before you can get the focus for scrying? If so, you might try a lesser planar binding (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/planarBindingLesser.htm) spell to call up another creature to go get your familiar, or at least inform him it's okay to come back to you if he's able to go. Hell, come to think of it, you might be able to use lesser planar binding to just skip the middleman and pull your familiar directly to you, depending on how your DM interprets "creature from another plane". (An elemental is definitely extraplanar, but if he's already on the same plane as you, it may or may not work.) |
| Antarx11-20-06, 01:30 PM | My DM doesn't use XP system. He gave us a level with each adventure. we just started the next one the las day. I need something before reach level 9. (Anyway, when I reach level 9, I can get Teleport and Scrying as bonus spells, and travel next to him...) Thanks for all the advices, but the problem continues. I need more help |
| malignor11-20-06, 06:37 PM | Useful 4th level arcane spells - Scrying (mentioned) - Lesser Geas - get someone to rescue your familiar and/or report his state to you. The Druid - can cast Animal Messenger to talk to your familiar. |

It just feels like screw over - purposfully making it difficult just because you came up with an solution to get rid of the curse. Thats what it seems like to me anyway. My first inclination is to be stuborn about it. Ignore it and see if it sorts itself out. The familiar knows where your heading, it has not been killed. No problem, it should find its way home sooner of later, it is just a magical tool afterall. Also is your familiar more important than the currant mission? The alternative is to leave the party in search of your familiar. It is not like you have an obvious solution (though the DM might think there is one) Maybe the party will follow, if not then create a new character. |

It just feels like screw over - purposfully making it difficult just because you came up with an solution to get rid of the curse. Thats what it seems like to me anyway. I'm agree with you, but it's not exactly as you think. My DM has his own vision about elementals. I say that elementals doesn't sleep, and can fly all the day (It's an air elemental... flying doesn't must be considered an effort for him...) but my Dm says that he must rest AND HUNT FOOR FOOD Also, i say that he has a perfect maneuver, and can fly faster that most of the flying mosnters. if engaged by a faster creature, he can gain distance by flying up (at full speed rather than half, thanks to his perfect maneuverability) If results not enought to evade the pursue, he can hide himself (its a tiny creature) or become a whirlwind, or something else. In fact, I can't think about anything that can attack him. A dragon can, of course, but why a dragon would want to hunt a TINY creature? Not for hungry... And I really can't understand how the monster could had approach him in the middle of the air without being detected (and evaded) but clearly, my DM doesn't think alike. Anyways, my familiar it's not my primary goal, but i don't want to let him die (or at least, not this kind of stupid death) The lesser geas ca be an option... but i must find some middle intelligent, flying creature... or a creature faster than my familiar (and attach him a note... my familiar can read XDD) In any case, track a flying tiny creature that must be hidding somewhere betwen the mountains, is a hard task. About animal messneger... is the same problem as above. Ops, I forget to say it, I have 2 level in a prc, so my familiar can't speak with amimals form his own tipe (if an eagle elemental still is considered a bird...) Also, my party looks at my problem like a joke... I'm planning a revenge agains't them, but thats another thread... |

Seeing as you currently can't exactly get it now without leaving the party, as hard as it seems maybe you need to wait till you go up another level. Either it will find its own way back by then or you get to 9th and get teleport and scry. Seems like the best solution to me. If it dies in the meantime you can't do much about it - its a DMs call, his choice. You can't be faulted for that. |
