My sister's and I recently started preparations for a all-half-dragon party, but we had some trouble with the Hit Die. It says to increase the base creature's Hit Die by one die size, but we don't know what that is for humans (on an elf, we just made a lucky guess by using the MM.) My sister inceased her class Hit Die, but I'm having my doubts about that. A hint, anyone?

Humans have no base HD (it gets replaced by class HD). So for humans the HD increase does nothing. Your sister is wrong.

Okay, thank you.

I was under the impression that it DID make your class HD one size larger, for all future levels as well.
(I think there was an example to this effect in 3.0)

No, sry, only Racial Hit Die, and since the races presented in the PHB dosnt have any Racial Hit Die, non are increased.

If you played a Centaur/Lizardfolk/What-ever, then your Hit Die would increase.

Class HD is not the same as racial hd.

Hmm, possibly it got changed in 3.5 then, or I wasn't looking closely enough at the entry.

IMO it is an acceptable house-rule to increase all HD by one size, even class HD. 1/2 dragon is a bit weak at +3 LA for my taste, especially already hp-desperate non-martial characters.

Personally, I think 1/2 dragons are pretty dang weak compared to normal characters, untill you get high enough lvl that the 3-hd difference isn't as big.
being an ECL 4 with only the hp of a lvl 2 character, is kinda sad.

Never really mattered to me, since the only half-dragon I ever played was a barbarian and he had a d12 HD so I didn't apply it.

My character's a paladin, but my sisters are only a sorceror and a ranger. My sister is an elf/half-dragon, though, so we used the first level elven warrior's Hit Die. I'm not sure if she used it though, think it was too confusing and she passed it over. But I think the hitpoints won't be a problem, as long as I can stay upfront. I managed to get a 24 strength score, and I chose weapon focus (battleaxe) as my starting feat, so if I have a fifth level Fighter's attack bonus at first level. Also, a party with three different breath weapons can't be that bad.
