| TimelordSimone03-17-07, 02:10 PM | I'm about to start playing in a new campaign. I think 1st/2nd level. The party will be 4 or 5 big I think... The problem is... I have no inspiration for my character! I know this is lame. And I could just make something anyway... But then I won't like the character... Which is what happened last time... I'm considering being a cleric, because I've never been one before, and nobody else seems to like being a healer, so it would be useful. But I'm still not feeling the inspiration... I don't think it helps that I'm not entirely sure what races we're allowed to be... I think it's: Human, Wood elf, Changeling, and some big rock thing that I can't remembar the name of... and possibly Gnomes... This is quite possibly the dumbest thing ever. But I need inspiration! |

It represents someone choosen by a god to bring forth his will, without any church backing them, or even with the church seeing him as an heresy. Think of the classic "paesant hero", like Joan d'Arc - very little training, but with a call to do something (the something would depend heavily on the campaign played...) |
| TimelordSimone03-17-07, 02:32 PM | What book is the favoured soul in? My friend has tons of books. I have about six. That does sound pretty cool though. I'm gonna try and avoid being human. Cos I've done that a lot. But that does sound cool. |
| Dragoncat03-17-07, 02:32 PM | This is quite possibly the dumbest thing ever. But I need inspiration! Not dumb at all. Inspiration is the key to role playing, as it creates the impetus to become that character. Inspiration, unfortunately, is a bit hard to track down. I recommend you relax and don't worry about it. Instead, read some books, watch some movies, play some games, do whatever, and think about the various characters you find within the literature. Wait until you find that flash of "I want to do that!", or the nifty twist on a certain archetype that you find appealing. This is not to say you should simply copy people, but instead take those elements you enjoy, blend them with your own creativity, and create something you are inspired to play. Remember, you do not find the muse, the muse finds you. |
| kelvinaw27303-17-07, 02:33 PM | If you are a cleric, draw your inspiration from your god ... literally if need be. |
| TheChilliGod03-17-07, 02:33 PM | Big rock thing... Most likely Goliaths from Races of Stone, I suppose. And Favored Souls are from Complete Divine. Judging from your post, it either seems as though you weren't being attentive when the DM was talking about all of this, or the DM wasn't being clear enough. Either way, you might want to take a think about whether or not you have the energy for this campaign. No offense. Okay, inspiration. I hate it. It's always taunting me. But here's a few suggestions that bend around the line of cleric a bit. -A 'Rock-thing' cleric that focuses on self-buffing before battle; Bless, Divine Favor, and so on. Can make for a good fighter-type, and you still have spontaneous cure. -A Wood Elf druid. They can cast cure spells to a degree, and you get some extra flavor for nature. -A Changeling bard. Ooh, original! They can cast some minor cure spells as good as any cleric, and those illusion spells go well with the self-camouflage. -A Human Paladin. Lay on hands (If you're starting at 2nd) can patch the party up until you get your hands on some potions and wands, and you can also be pious and everything. Hope I helped. |
| TimelordSimone03-17-07, 02:36 PM | That is also a good idea. I tend to do that anyway, drawing ideas from books and stuff. I haven't watched any films in aaaages though. The last film I watched involved shapeshifting racoons. I don't think my DM will allow that!:P But yeah. Sitting there and trying to let inspiration find me sounds good. Thank you. |
| TimelordSimone03-17-07, 02:43 PM | That's right. Goliaths. That is the thing he was on about. In my future Dms defence, he hasn't actually fully decided what he's doing yet. This is why details are a tad vague at the moment. Thanks. Those are all great ideas. I may avoid being a paladin though... My DM is using this adjusted Paladin that I hate. Which is a shame, because I've never actually been a Paladin. But yeah, thanks for the help people. It's all good. :) |

I believe the Paladin in the Player's Handbook is fine. |
| danielinthewolvesden03-18-07, 02:18 AM | Then do play a Favoured Soul. You were a simple peasant/shoemaker/beggar but Tyr/Boccob/Thor/whatever came to you in a vision and picked you. You do not know anything about holy scripture or comparative religion all you know is that Thor picked YOU and this is your Holy Hammer of Thor! You will smite Thor's enemies and spread the Word of Thor! Phui to those cloistered clerics and those cityfied Bishops- Thor picked YOU and not them! All Power to Thor! Change diety and favoured wepon as needed. With a FS, choose one healing type spell every level, the rest os up to you. It's kinda a paladin. |
| Mystyc03-18-07, 02:45 AM | But I need inspiration! Be a factotum. :rimshot: Although, if you aren't quite sure what you want to be, it might not be a bad idea... |
| kelvinaw27303-18-07, 10:03 AM | The book you need is Complete Divine. If you want to be party healer, then you need a divine caster. The options are: Cleric - tailor to deity as required. If a deity does not grab you try .... Druid - nature magic, go wild with it. If druids seem too overpowered, flip to Complete Divine .... Favoured Soul - the god chose you, and there's nothing you can do about it so you better get used to the idea. Need Charisma first and Wisdom second. Spirit Shaman - focussed on nature spirits, you pick from the Druid spell list but cast spontaneusly; very effective against incorporeal beings. I'm using this as the healer option in a campaign at the moment. Need a good charisma to cast effectively, this is a good alternative to the Druid. Shugenja - almost an arcane caster, they use divine magic and concentrate on favoured elements and schools. Spell acquisition is complex but they have a good choice. |

I was gonna stickto core classes, but I'll allow Favoured Souls an Spirit Shamans. The reason I'm saying no to Shugenja is because there an Oriental class, and I want them to be from the country they're in. Hmm....I think I've swallowed battery fluid |

I don't like the Shugenja anyway. I wanted a better base attack bonus than that. Both the favoured soul and the spirit shaman look awesome though. (In fact, had I known it existed, my last Character would have been a Spirit Shaman rather than a Druid) Hmm... That's what you get for taking batteries out of something using your teeth. |
