I need some devilish inspiration [Archive] - Wizards Community

My brother (real life, not in game) has invested a lot of his portion of adventuring swag into a town he's the baron of (DM let him roll, he got lucky). He's not going to sponsor an Arena tournament, with some serious loot for the winner. Of course we're all encouraged to join, but here's the kicker: spellcasting is prohibited.

My brother is playing a fighter. I can't entirely tell if he's roleplaying a disdain for magic, or if he's just trying to give me the shaft (I'm a sorcerer / wild mage), but he's prohibited spellcasting. A druid friend of mine in the party has been working on him too, and we've convinced him to allow "buff spells" (which I'm assuming is any spell with a target of personal) and we're working on allowing magical items.

So I'm trying to scheme how I'm going to go about not getting beat down by a bunch of hulking brutes in a tournament (it looks like it's 1v1 ladder, not party v party). He hasn't established written rules yet, and keeps changing his mind, but with personal buffs, I'm thinking mage armor + levitate, which'll make it much more difficult for the party fighters to touch me (they refuse to buy ranged weapons). From there it's just throw acid flasks or fire crossbow bolts.

So I'm looking for some inspiration. If anyone has some devilish ways to give the hulking brutes a hard time, I'd appreciate it. I have no intention of winning the arena. The DM will likely throw in NPC battles for each of us to allow him to partake, and he's probably going to give them ranged weapons. If I can knock off the NPCs, I can likely take on the party, who'll probably be forced to stand below me and toss their swords.

I'm trying to convince my brother to allow magical items and just prohibit offensive spellcasting. Then I could use some wand mischief (:

Potions and Scrolls look like they're allowed (specifically, they haven't been outlawed), and I could always pull out the polymorph scrolls. I'm 7th level.

*Edit* Oh, my party, and likely finalists in this little shindig, consists of a Paladin, Fighter, Druid, Ranger (problem, hope I don't face him), and rogue.

I'd enter the tourney, then break the rules, blowing stuff up left and right. Your entire class is based around casting spells, and not doing so offensively means you're at a great disadvantage. Besides, if he really doesn't like magic as much as you say, he'll disqualify you within a round or two.

Hm. Perhaps you should consider stealing the phat lewt instead of trying to win it fairly... Yes, just sneak in and swipe it all. Then sell it at the next town, of course - you don't want to be caught using the stolen goods.

Hah, I can just see it now - while the party is fighting in the arena, your wizard tells them he's above such things (and OOC, you tell them you don't want to participate because of the no magic restriction), and you start passing the DM notes about your actions. The champion of the arena is deternimed, they bring out the chest of treasure that represents his winnings... and they find it full of rocks, along with a note from some fictional bandit king (to take the blame).

if 'buff' spells are allowed, you should be able to pose quite a threat. The winner combo IMHO is polymorph+Tenser's transformation(uae scrolls of both). Basicly, just polymorph yourself into the best 7HD thing you can find in any of your allowed books( I recommend either bearded devil or dwarf ancestor if you have MM4) and then boost your str, dex, con and BAB via Tenser's.
