I am starting a new character in an ongoing campaign (my old character died), and I'm going to play a hellspaun. It's a 12th level campaign, so I'm an 11th level tiefling ninja. Here's the fun part: I've never been to the material plane in my life.

I was born in the Nine Hells my father is one of the Dark Eight (the top ranking generals in the infernal army), and served as a blood war soldier my whole life. I started out as a simple rank-and-file soldier, but as I dont possess the standard devil's damage reduction, I was getting hurt a lot more often then my peers. So, I started to look for ways to avoid getting hit, and I decided to persue stealth over raw power. Thus, I became a ninja. As I progressed in ranks in the infernal army, I became a specialist of sorts, like most PCs are in war adventures. I acted as an assassin out of battle, and in a battle I would use my abilities to take down the leaders. I eventually became one of Asmodeus's favorite assassins.

I am going to be a part of the party because the party wizard will cast Planear Bonding, and I will be called. (I've planned this out with the wizard's player) While innitally hostile, I will eventually decide that traveling with these mortals could prove benefital, and will arrange to be released from blood war service indeffinitly. Here's where I need your help: I need some ideas for roleplaying quirks to use for my character. He is rather bewildered by most mortal concepts about peace and how creatures have a right to exist, seeing how he's been in a world where betrayal is almost assured and where the entire species is constantly at war his whole life. What would be some good ways to play him that reflect this?

Lawful evil exemplar, I'm thing racist sexist xenophobic bigot.
Something he may have trouble dealing with is nobody telling him what to do. "spare time" would be an alien concept for a devil soldier.

He will have an attitude of "Strong rule the weak" and a clear mindset that says anyone is either dominated (and therefore fit only to be used and abused) or dominator (to be feared and abhored). He'll hate everything and everyone, he'll expect to be treated like dirt and if the party fail to do so he will assume they are weak and he'll treat them like dirt. He will have NO concept of mercy or compassion (if an enemy spares you it is to torture you later), and any display of such is either a ruse or weakness. You must perform attrocities in order to win respect (see above, you do not wish to appear weak), you must smash enemies brutally and without mercy before they do it to you.

Essentially think of the most ****ed up teenager with attitude problems and issues, multiply them a hundred-fold and then stick them in an older person.

He'll also be confused by attitudes between the party members ... he'll have no idea of cameraderie except in the loosest sense, affection he will interpret as jockying for power by trading favours. He will not differentiate between humanoid races, they are all scum. The world around him is strange and alien - he cannot understand 'nature' for instance - and the constancy of the natural laws he will view with distrust.

Until he learns to interact with normal humans and humanoids, he will need to be kept on a short leash ...

I'd say your backstory is making you a bit too powerful and influential... but that can be handled elsewhere.

You come from an existence of absolute betrayal. Demand to get any agreement in writing, and then try to exploit said agreement whenever possible. You shouldn't offer to help anyone unless it benefits you. Treat all mortals like you would a child, lead them along and manipulate them into doing or saying what you want. If someone double-crosses you or your team, kill them, their family, their pets, their friends, and then burn their house down. Always remember, you are a proud soldier in the legions of hell, this pathetic little world is full of clueless berks who have no idea how the cosmos works, they are hardly worth your time.

Wow, those are good ideas. Oren, I assume that what you mean about my backstory making me too influential, being the son of a devil general isn't THAT good, it's not like I'm going to call upon him for aid or anything. As for being a favored assassin of Asmodeus, what I mean by that is I'm in the top 50 on his "list", and considering that he has a "list" of thousands, that's pretty good.

I like your ideas of thinking that all compassion is weakness, I'll use that, and most of the other ideas too. I'll gradually (VERY gradually) reduce the suspisions and badass attitude as I become more and more used to the mortal world. I'm not going to go too far, as this is a neutral and evil party, but I'll start to understand that not all surrenders are ruses, that creatures in the world exist for a reason other than to serve, and that peace is the natural state of the world.

Thanks for the ideas, they're great. If anyone has any more I'd love to hear them! :)
