| Lokiyn05-02-04, 12:57 AM | I have a 9th level Sorc that managed to... iritate a *valkirye*?? beyond all reason. As to how and why thats another story involving some Rp, previous circumstances, and the fact he was slightly insane. End result was that the roll for the valkirye to get her patron dieties attention was a 100% while the reaction was a 1% so now i am stuck with a perm. diety class antimagic field centered on me that pretty much eliminated all use of magic. I was thinking of scrapping the character but i want to know if anyone has any ideas for taking new classes to turn this liability into an asset. |
| Quenditar05-02-04, 01:17 AM | Monk or Fighter, maybe? Charge enemy spellcasters and use your antimagic field to negate their magic. |
| Vanigo05-02-04, 02:10 AM | Yeah, you're probably going to want to make a new character. An AMF isn't worth 9 commoner levels, no matter what class you go into. |
| Pumpoei05-02-04, 10:54 AM | Don't multiclass. You GM will fix his lame mistake soon enough, when he realizes that now your completely immune to hostile magics. You should act, out of character, extemely pleased. Exploit this creatively enough, and you won't have this problem for more than half a session. |
| ninjarabbit05-02-04, 02:15 PM | Could you post the stats, skills, and feats of your guy please so I can look at him and determine what course of action to take. |
| KAPtain Braindead05-04-04, 03:04 AM | The DM might force you to do an act of redemption of some sort to correct this. Give him a chance. If worse comes to worse, your character has a class that allows multiclassing without major problems. If you must multiclass, I'd recommend either Rogue or Barbarian for new class. The boost to your skills and HP's will benefit you greatly. |
| Orcish Fury05-04-04, 03:54 AM | Have fun working it out in character. |
| Beamup05-04-04, 08:37 AM | Don't multiclass. Either the DM is intending this to be temporary, so you'll be losing out by multiclassing, or he's determined to either kill off or render totally ineffectual your PC - in which case it'll happen regardless. |
| elf killer 3205-04-04, 10:57 AM | Go Barbarian. The Rage boost will make up for your probably puny strength, and will allow you to massacre enemy spell casters when you close. Even if the feild isn't permanent, getting 4 levels of Barbarian won't hurt you to much, as you will be able to still cast 9 th level spells without going epic. Whatever you do, don't make a new character, this is a perfect Rp opurtunity. |

Sorcs have to be level 18 to get their first level 9 spell. And if they stay at 18, that's only 1 level 9 spell. |
| philopharynx05-04-04, 06:06 PM | Hmmm... something like that and I'd look for a new GM. |
| SlainByLich05-06-04, 02:03 PM | Take a few levels of wilder from the XPH. Anti magic doesnt mean anti psionic. :) |
| markhaus05-06-04, 02:10 PM | Dragon Disciple/ Monk or Barbarian, depending on stats. Immune to magic, high stats, and monk abilities/rage. If you can pull off monk do it, that way you dont need magic items to harm creatures. Make him rue the day he gave you antimagic. If he is a jerk and the antimagic ONLY affects your character make a new character and be the follower of whatever god did that. DONT HOLD A GRUDGE AGAINST YOUR DM! |
| MarkusH05-06-04, 02:21 PM | Take a level of fighter, then go Eldritch Knight. If the DM hasn't fixed it by two levels, it will be pretty much permanent anyway. |
| Lincoln Hills05-06-04, 02:54 PM | By all means, go Rogue! Invest in Search and scorn Disable Device: every time the DM tells you, "You think there's a magical trap here," walk up and trip the trap. And then laugh as your personal field prevents the trap from going off. Offer to carry cursed items the rest of the party may be burdened with. Their inability to remove those items will disappear as soon as you walk up to 'em, and you will suffer absolutely no ill effect since the curses will be dormant. That sword -2 can't even spring across to force itself into the hands of the guy who first picked it up - because it's sitting in your personal field. Regularly inform beholders, spellweavers and other magic-intensive entities that their mamas (or brood-parents, or elder-things) are fat and ugly, and that they take after their mamas. You're soft and squishy, so stay back and trust in a good ol' masterwork crossbow with a selection of 'special' ammo (masterwork silver-tipped, masterwork adamantite, etc.) Whenever the DM attempts to target you with summoned monsters, spiritual weapon, or virtually anything else, giggle with glee. I guarantee - this is ONE divine curse that will be rethought, darn toot sweet. |
| Vanigo05-06-04, 07:15 PM | Actually, there's another big downside: You're unaffected by healing magic. About the only way you can regain health is by natural healing, and that's slow. |

There is a feat in the XPH that allows you to recover hp equal to 1+con mod, even if you dont rest, you recover double that ammount if you take a full rest. |

Every day? That's still really slow. Every hour would be borderline. |
| SlainByLich05-06-04, 09:53 PM | Originally posted by Vanigo 1 + con mod every how often? Every day? That's still really slow. Every hour would be borderline. It is daily. Not exactly worth a feat, but better than just recovering 1 measly hp a day. Its usefullness is of course dependant upon the amount of clerical casting available in a world. In a world with no clerics or druids, this really isn't so bad, |
| Nom05-07-04, 01:05 AM | On healing, I would have thought that regaining HP = char level (d20 SRD), doubled for full rest, was better than 1 + Con mod for any level over about 5? Or does the Con mod bonus stack with the char level bonus? On permanent AMF, it's worth being aware of the rather critical distinction between Su (supernatural) and Ex (extraordinary) abilities. The former cease to function; the latter don't. In particular, note that a Lycanthrope's damage reduction is (Ex). The various Demons don't specify. |
| markhaus05-07-04, 06:37 AM | This is gonna sound stupid, but does antimagic field effect divine spells? i thought it only worked against arcane. |
| Revelation05-07-04, 09:48 AM | Originally posted by markhaus This is gonna sound stupid, but does antimagic field effect divine spells? i thought it only worked against arcane. It does !;) Don't worry though it does work on divine. it's well worth a read in the PHB to see what antimagic can do, very useful for the Dm and the players. (Once you've had beholders teamed with other toughs you'll get a real respect for their antimagic eye, the same should hold true for a party) |
| Nom05-07-04, 10:00 AM | It nullifies "spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities" and "prevents the functioning of any magic items or spells within its confines". Arcane magic, divine magic, inherent Su or Sp - it's all suppressed with this spell. Note that word: "suppressed". AM does not in any way dispel magic, it just makes it not function within the AMF. A spell cannot begin to function in an AMF, but if it was pre-existing (and still has duration) it will return once the AMF moves away. I'm not certain about this, but as far as I can tell an AMF doesn't block line of effect either. The spell wont function while travelling through the AMF, but will resume on the other side as long as the point of origin of effect isn't within the AMF. Rays could be interesting. Refs: PH 3.5, pg 200; DMG 3.5, pg 290. |
| SmiloDan05-07-04, 11:15 AM | MarkusH sounds like he has the best plan. Go Fighter/Eldritch Knight. And go the archery route, as you probably don't have tons of hitpoints OR Strength, but you probably have decent Dex. If it doesn't go away after a couple levels, stay Fighter and shoot from the rear of the party. What feats and skills do you have, anyways? |
| Alderic05-08-04, 06:17 AM | First levels as a fighter, no doubt. Then I'd look for a temple of the deity you offended and maybe ask for a way to atone. In the meantime, you can get a level of spellsword, full bab, good saves, and a level of spellcasting jsut in case you get your powers back, and that reduction in the ASF that will come in handy if you get your spells back, but got used to your armor. Then straigh EK. Oh, and buy Arcane strike asap, you're not using your spell slots for much else anyway. Of course if the deity is firmly set on keeping you within an AM field for the reast of your life, I'd start burning his temples down one by one, it's not like he can rain fire on you anymore ;) |

| trapspringer05-08-04, 09:27 PM | It sounds like this could be a lot of fun. I would (not normaly, but under the reign of this cruel DM) abuse the hell out of this. You have a BAB of +4 now, so you can get most of the cool fighter feats that are atainable in a short amoun of time, and I hope you have not taken any flaws yet (Uneathed Arcana). When you turn level 10, take that level in the spell-less paladin varient. Their is a paladin varient in UA whcih can have a chaotic alignment, too, so your pretty much covered. Take a flaw, and grab something like finess or weapon focus or the mage slayer feat. Your high charisma will boost your saves (that may be at second level, not sure) and if you choose an oposing diety to the one who cursed you, who knows, their may be D-rific intervention. Either way, you can waltz up to an evil wizard and lay the smack down. On top of that, your party will love the boost on saves versus fear, and if the effet wears of in a couple of levels, you can heal your self and will have better saves. |
| Aurotuli05-08-04, 10:27 PM | The two best ideas have already been stated: Monk / Dragon Disciple Fighter / Eldritch Knight The former grants you various immunities (if high in monk) &/or stat boosts (if high in DD). Also, IIRC, monks gain an ability to heal their wounds. This might work in an AMF, but I'm not sure (does AMF also affect what is happening inside the creature it is surronding, or just the area around the creature?) Hmm. If you never get your powers back then follow Dragon Disciple more than monk, as there is less to lose. The latter is best if you are all but certain you'll be gaining your powers back eventually. If the DM shows signs of unease at how you use your AMF by the time you have to choose a new level then this might be the best route to take. Plenty of fighting ability (better go for ranged type attacks) and continued advancement in spellcasting ability. The rogue idea is amusing. Perhaps just one level so you can find and deal with magic traps? :smirk: |
| Zilred05-09-04, 01:19 AM | The wilder suggestion probably wouldn't work unless the DM wants to go with the headache of psionics and magic being different. The Expanded Psionics Handbook may still have something to offer though. Soulknife could be somewhat viable, depending on the situation. While a few fighter levels would bring a greater temporary benefit, soulknife can be better in the long run, especially if the AMF does turn out to be permanent. As for why, a soulknife can manifest their energy blade in AMF and NPF areas as long as he makes a WILL save every now and then to keep it in existance (and even if it does fade out, he can make a WILL save next round to make it reappear). With the previous few levels in sorcerer to beef up that WILL save, you aren't in bad shape. The soulknife class is also the only class than can bring a magical weapon into non-magical areas. That fact could be interesting when you close with a wizard, deactivating all of his stat-enhancing equipment while you still have your +1 Keen Shortsword (or better at later levels: +5 Keen Wounding Bastard Sword of Impact). Also, bear in mind that since AMF doesn't actually dispel the magic, you can still deliver some spells via familiar. I'm not sure if being in an AMF zone would allow you to cast a spell that takes effect outside of the AMF, so I'll keep with the assumption that you cannot cast out of it. |
| quicksilverrogue05-09-04, 01:28 AM | MIGHT I suggest the FORESAKER Prestige class? Use adamantine weapons.. inherit +'s to hit and damage... and what about going fighter, and taking hitpoint buff feats? |
| SmiloDan05-09-04, 02:21 PM | The paladin idea may not work as good as you think, because Anti-magic nerfs Supernatural abilities, Spell-like abilities and Spells. I'm pretty sure Divine Grace is Su. I don't have my books, so I might be wrong. Ditto with a lot of the monk abilities. If you are an elf, maybe take Arcane Archer. If you don't have the feats, go Fighter / Eldritch Knight / Fighter to pick them up. Heck, that's 4 feats in 3 levels. Not too shabby. |
| trapspringer05-09-04, 03:13 PM | ooh, good point. It would be difficult to utilize your high charisma given this fact. You still retain your familiar, but that's basically the only carry-over. Not a whole lot of non magical stuff based on charisma that's worth doing. Fighter still sounds logical, or maybe even rogue. If you took the variant fighter thug and sneak attack damage, you could even use your familiar to flank and your charisma to feint in combat. It all revolves around keeping your options open for the future, though. |
| Alderic05-10-04, 01:22 PM | Now that I look at it more carefully, I really hope my DM does something like that to my sorcerer. We go by the 3.0 PHB only, no 3.5 and no erratas or corrections. I really can't find anything about you being unable to blast your enemies with fireballs and stuff like that while within an AM field, you don't even have to worry about hitting yourself. You can summon all sort of nasty creatures that will never be able to harm you, so you can make all sort of deals with them (careful if someone manages to gate one of those outsiders you've cheated, but when you've an angry god cursing you, I don't think you have to worry about lesser demons) The best part of it is that the god himself cannot unmake what he's done, since dispelling isn't an option. The only thing he can do to you is trap you withing a force field, force cage or prismatic sphere, nothing else will work. Basically, you cannot self buff, but I think that's a good deal, when no enemy spell can hit you. Oh well....sounds too good to be true, especially for a curse ^_^ |

| eudas05-13-04, 04:10 PM | Soulknife sounds like the best idea so far, followed by Fighter/EK (in case you ever get the friggin' thing taken off). eudas |
| ShadowRanger05-13-04, 06:27 PM | Soulknife or Fighter/EK sounds really good, both have abilities that function quite well in the anti-magic field (anyway I might be able to get one of those?). Don't shove it in his face but do little things suggested above to make him reconsider, incorpoeral creatures wink out in an AMF, no more worrying about ghosts (they can never kill you, and if you go soulknife you can still kill them by throwing your mind blade). I think the DM will reconsider after he sees all the enemeis Sp and Su abilities begin to lose their usefulness, all the party has to do is hid in your field, ecspecially if you go right after them, they move out, cast, fight, etc then you move up to them covering them in the AMF. DM will get annoyed, but point out he did it. |
| Lokiyn05-13-04, 07:13 PM | wow i never expected this thread to go this far. The campaign unofficially ended a few sessions after that when all the other characters had met thier end in various ways except for one , i'm sure you can guess which one. when we all just stopped showing up for sessions. great ideas though i expect if i ever use this guy again he will be rewound to b4 all that unpleasentness |
