DeSudet 04-03-06, 05:06 PM	Somewhere along the way in one of the campaigns I'm playing in, I lost track of XP and wound up with a level 7 wizard with only 20,000XP(1,000 short of 7th level). I realized my screw-up last night. I doubt it would have been an issue had I not used the 4th level spell granted at 7th level in our latest outing. I've already owned up to it to the DM (in private e-mail) and am keeping my fingers crossed that he'll take it in stride and not hurt me too badly, but I'm curious what kind of penalties other players may have fallen prey to, or what other DMs (honestly and seriously) would do/have done, in similar circumstances.
dragonseth 04-03-06, 05:25 PM	Do you have the same XP as everyone else? Most of our guys have identical XP, except for crafters and guys with Item Familiars. That could make it easy, but it doesn't sound like that's the case for you. If you are indeed level 7, I would imagine he'll be cool about it and let you stay there. Edit: Sorry, I thought you missed an encounter somewhere and actually were level 7. It would appear you accidentally went to level 7 even though you shouldn't have? Still, the penalty shouldn't be too big. It's an honest mistake.
Feor 04-03-06, 05:26 PM	If the rest of the party is already level 7, he might just let you have the extra 1000XP. Alot of the time, going back through old sessions you can find enough stuff to scrape together a few hundred XP if that's all your short by for a level. Otherwise, he might just write it off as "a moment of inspiration" when you used that 4th level spell and say you don't get XP for that particular encounter (or that particular enemy, in that particular encounter)

He's actually a great DM IMO, and I just heard back from him. He's letting it slide. It's the first screw-up I've made outside of normal "haven't played since 2e" fuzziness on a few rules. As for the rest of the party, My character came in late to the campaign and started well behind the others(In an open race to reclaim some artifacts from this dungeon, he was under the tutelage of another wizard, and being the apprentice(read "pack mule") was lagging behind his party when they failed to recall the answer to a riddle and were annihilated in front of him; the current party found him in the dungeon and adopted him). With this most recent session, I'm now 7th level, but at least one of the other PCs is now up to 8th and another recent addition to the party is still 6th(this the character's first session and started at 6.5th level XP wise). He's giving us lower level characters slightly more XP per session to get everyone to the same level, but it's going to take a while with the current spread. Still curious what kind of penalties have been seen for this kind of thing. My other DM is a vindictive sadist that would've made it hurt along the lines of negative XP for the session... :P
Radijs 04-03-06, 09:20 PM	So far I haven't heard any stories of a DM penalizing a player for an honest mistake. It would be pretty silly to do so IMO.
lycanthrope0 04-13-06, 05:51 AM	my question is this can you have your DM go back and find out whatEXP you git ever session maybe it was a mathmatical mistake not a oops i need mre EXp to be 7th level mistake if not glad he didnt care you goofed a bit but i can not see why he would be to mad as it was a honest mistake ( we al hope! no JK)
Wargamer 04-13-06, 06:03 AM	I've seen similar mistakes... it's no big deal. You didn't do it on purpose, so I see no reason the DM can't either let it slide, or "fudge" your XP to put you on seventh level (I know I've given out "free" XP before when a party of almost-equal characters have ended a plot-line just 10-40xp off the level...).
Archangel_James 04-13-06, 05:57 PM	Easiest way to do this is to get 1000 bonus XP from your DM by doing something extra, like slaying a beast by yourself or taking an acting class and getting RP XP.
