I think I broke the campaign, what do I do now? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Alright, break down of a campaign I'm in:

I'm the highest level character playing an 18th level cleric compared to the next highest guys who are 15-16. I got there cause I'm the only original character from the beginning of the campaign.

I have a DM made demi-god template. Now, that sounds cheap, but believe me it isn't, the Saint template another character has is way more powerful.

I'm a Cloistered Cleric/Human Paragon/Church Inquisitor/Divine Disciple/Contemplative, so I've got power out the wazoo, and gear to match.

We've started encountering enemies from the Epic Level Handbook, I think mainly because me and the DM's PC are so powerful and destroying most enemies (I don't usually do anything because I don't want to steal the game away from others, but the monsters are getting so tough I'm often the only one who can save the party)

Now we've recently defeated 3 Mithral Golems. Now, my DM tried to get rid of them so we couldn't sell them, but I stopped him with some good old magic. Now I have 36000 lb. of Mithral sitting on my personal Demi-plane, which is very much immune to anybody getting on it or even knowing it exists. This means I have about 18,000,000 gp sitting there. I have broken the campaign.

I don't want to spend this money of like +5 books in all stats, buy awesome weapons and equipment cause that would ruin the game further, but I can't. The money isn't all mine cause mithral golems are immune to magic, so I could only support the party and save the mithral from disappearing. Me and the party split the money equally, but then one character died and decided to make a new one, so more money for each of us. I'm the only one with access to the mithral, and thus the money so people have to come to me if they want to get it.

What should I do? I don't want to throw away the mithral, but I think that much money could easily destroy the economy of the world our characters are from. Should I only allow party memebers to buy equipment from another plane or should I take over the money so it's not used inapproprietly, cause I know my group, and this money could throw the whole game out of whack, even though I don't want to get rid of it.

You're a freakin' cleric. Donate your share of it to a higher-ranking member of your church, or if you're a cleric that lacks a deity or pantheon, donate it to a powerful outsider matching your alignment, outlook, and cause. Try to convince the others to do the same (this may involve some metagame reasoning with the other players: "Look, I know they're our shinies fair and square, but the game is already broken and it's just going to get worse when we actually reach epic levels, do we really need the hardware to push us there quickly?").

This should dispose of the wealth cleanly, leave it up to the DM what impact this wealth should have in the game, and should earn you some more respect (and possibly later favours) with the higher-ups in your faith.

Well that's the thing, I worship a DM made god that doesn't have much of a following, I don't have a church to donate to... but that makes it all the sweeter doesn't it, I'll create the church myself

use it as a large bludgeoning instrument.

It's just that funny, that you have to do it (at least once)

you can also use it to bribe a dragon...

Well there you go, building a church that's a real power and presence in the world will take a metric buttload of money. Recommend once you've got it built you leave the management in the hands of other members of the church though, so you don't end up taking over the game in a broader sense.

Build it out of Mithral. :)

:D Nice.

Kidding aside, though, I think if he really wants to make this religion a big thing in the world, he probably ought to create multiple temples to draw in followers and spread their influence, rather than one big impressive hulking temple. One big impressive anything in a RPG has a big fat bullseye on it, and if it's the only one, its destruction means the party's over. Better to have several smaller functioning temples spread out, IMO. Wider influence footprint to build from that way, too.

Great ideas guys :D

Problem with building my church now though is that we're at war with an evil overlord type guy who rules the known world and sends powerful monsters, demons and warriors against us, so building the church of my good god under his evil regime might bring about some wrath, so I'll save it for after we (hopefully) kill him

How popular is this evil overlord guy? If you were to build a handful of strong temple-fortresses and offer them as shelter from the evil overlord's forces to those willing to help with upkeep (and defense, for those able), would you likely get a lot of bites? Possibly enough to make the construction of more temple-fortresses a worthwhile endeavour?

You might be able to get rebel allies to help with conflicts, and possibly converts by way of gratitude, if the evil overlord isn't especially popular with the masses.

I don't think you broke your game.

Seems like the DM left huge gaping holes in the design.

"I beat my DM with Good ole magic?"

How does one beat a DM?

Yeah, on the mithral, give it away to the poor.

If you guys were using Birthright, wow, you could set up a string of temples with that.

If you are vieing against an evil overlord type that you will eventually overthrow, keep the mithril/money and use it to rebuild afterwards (including several temples to you). That much could revitalize an area easily if you don't want to spend it on yourself.

Another thing to consider is overflowing the market. If you sell that much mithral in one place, it had better be planar metropolis on size with Sigil, or the price on mithral is gonna go down. A lot.

And also remember, not every merchant has that kind of money (as in, pretty much no merchants at all), and with an evil overlord ruling the world, selling it to the goverment aint that good an idea, and doing it publicly might lead to officials asking annoying questions. Just getting rid the mithral could be a quest in itself.

I'll tell you exactly how to spend it. Build a stronghold from the Stronghold Builders Guidebook. If you don't have the book, buy it. Trust me, it will take a load of worries off.

First, I cannot spell.

dawnbringer has the right of it. A base of operations is an excellent idea since:
1- it gives you a staging ground to prepare for conflicts
2 - leads to its own sidequests
3 - allows you to have a place to send refugees
4 - allows you a place where you can draw new characters from
5 - benifits the whole party
6 - uses up a lot of the gold you have
7 - gives an area for recrutement for an army to be used against the BBEG
8 - potentionally becomes the new capital of the world you are changing
9 - potentionally becomes an excellent battle scene and RP experience if it were attacked
10 - is a safe place to run away to

The list keeps going.

I'm thinking mithril hut in the demiplane.

Anyone else on that page?

No.

Just me?

No real advantage. A shack of mithral isn't much more defensively strong than a shack of steel, and it's not likely to be moved around much to make being lighter much benefit. If someone can assault the demiplane they can surely take a mithral shack. Besides, that much valuable material has a way of attracting attention and reducing security.

Better to liquidate the assets and turn them into something that has worth to the character without throwing the game mechanics further out of balance.

What should I do?

Based on this data I wouldn't worry. Nothing you could do as a player that would ruin the game more than the DM already has.

So you're suggesting a steel hut with a liquid mithral river?

I like it.

Offer 1/2 to some powerful great wurm dragons to protect X from the BBEG and drive his followers out of the region. Use the rest to set up your founding church there.

Alternatively you could be less fancy and pick multiple sites instead of one.

Also liquid mithril defenses are awesome.

I completely disagree with this. If you go to the largest city and build a freaking enormous mithril temple that can be seen miles away, that's kind of saying something.

Yes, it's saying "Destroy me and you've broken the back of this religious organization, we have nothing to fall back to"

did you even think about using some of the money to outfit all of the rest of the party (y'know, the ones 2-3 levels behind you) with ridiculous equipment/magic items so they'd be more on par with you? so the party could take on encounters appropriate to your level and have the other pcs not suck? (2-3 levels is a pretty big gap)

once you do that, by all means start building a stronghold temple
1red13

04-26-08, 03:40 PM
How'd you get 2-3 levels higher than other pcs. Makes it pretty tough for the other pcs to stand out. Seems to me that the dm needs to pay them a little more attention.

And DMPC....well ..... no comment

With all that money you can set yourself up to be a real founder of your religion and spread it far & wide. That takes plenty of time and money.

Recreate the mithral Golems and have then fighting on your side. :P

Yeah, that would take more than 2 years.
