| Killah Niv3s03-10-05, 09:32 PM | We were playing a assasination (sort of) mission. Our party had to capture an elven ranger that knew the whereabouts of the Rancorvian seal (a magical item the we were trying to find), question her and kill her. She was attending a gala ball and we were going to infiltrate it. My plan was was to get close to her and slip truth serum in her drink or as a last resort get her near a closet, tie her up and question her. This is our party 2lv human fighter, our archer (decided to sneak in inside a barrel of wine w/ our weapons and explosive potions and, unfortunatly for us, our truth serum) 2lv half orc barbarian, our bloodletter 2lv human sorcerer very strange, likes to use weapons and has very low CON Me :D a 2lv human wizard, sort of comic relief, spent last quest trying to find a crossbow and died finding one (I die easily even though I have higher hitpoints than the Sorceror) speak in 3rd person (name Delfios Charmeldion) We all had concealed daggers and walked into the front room (w/ noone in it) where the invatation collector was. When asked to present my invite I attempted a charisma check, failed and yelled NOW to wich our Barbarian promply stabbed him. We entered the ballroom and were getting closer to the ranger when the fighter wine barrel rolled in and our sorceror took the top off to get the truth serum (or the explosives  ). A waiter saw the fighters legs and yelled. The fighter jumped out of the barrel and shot the waiter with his bow IN FRONT OF EVERYONE IN THE BALLROOM (I told him to say he was the entertainment but nooo don't listen to Delfious Charmeldion). 50 gaurds rushed into the ballroom and started attacking. Things were going ok using the explosives until the barbarian rolls a natural 1 (we have crit failures in our game and our DM thought this was to good to pass up) and our entire party was below 0 (the explosives delt 3d10 damage) and knocked out. We woke up about 5miles (my guess we really have no idea where we are) outside the city in the wilderness we managed to build a log cabin over a couple of days and in the middle of the night the man who told us to find the Rancorvian seal was dead on our doorstep with arcane surgical markings on his back (yay knowledge checks) :) and some sort of weird surgical instrument. At that point it was the end of the session and we are all wondering what to do next Sorry for long post and any feedback ideas, questions or just plain nitpicking would be appreiciated |

So I guess you can just try again :) I suggest this time a nightly raid on her bedroom or a quick kidnapping when she goes shopping. In dire straits you could go as low and just ask her :) |
| psionichamster03-11-05, 12:40 PM | first of all: don't attempt kidnappings in closed-door, public gatherings... if you're gonna be in public, make it be a square, park, or the like, with lots of ways out and no real chokepoints (better yet, with 1 or 2, that you know of and have operatives at) this way, you can approach the target, give her the "knife to the back" treatment, and she will most likely go with you. alternatively, get some sleeping powder/potion/spell and drop her as if she fainted. now, you're the good samaritan boyfriend/associate/whatever, rather than the stealthy ninja types you wanna be (not that you can't be, just that you're not ready for that yet) if you HAVE to infiltrate a closed building, go in as the help. mansions=servants. unless they're undead, you have a decent chance to blend in seemlessly. disguise kits are fairly cheap, as are hats of disguise (granted, the Hats may be out of your price range now, but if you pool your resources, perhaps rob a few chaps, you should be able to swing the 900 gp cost) also: get in well before your planned 'napping. this means you infiltrate her bedroom in the morning, and wait it out till she goes to sleep. or, get jobs as new servants (since you probably waylaid the old ones...) if you are on scene well before the action is set to begin, you will know the back-entrances and exits, the floor plan, and all other kinds of useful info... communication is VERY important...everyone should take at least a single rank of Perform:Mime (or whatever it's called) or Innuendo (3.0, iirc) and at LEAST a single rank of Sense Motive. effective, silent communication, even if you are across a crowded ballroom and they can't hear you (or you're magically silenced...useful for infil/exfil, not so useful for practical communication) alternatively, Mindlink, a 1st lvl psi. power from the XPH, Message or Whispering Wind (Sor/Wiz cantrip and 2nd lvl spell, respectively) can give you a decided advantage. also, consider your "plan"...talk your way (or cut your way) into the party, have LOTS of weapons/explosives available (through the "fighter in a barrel" trick), kill or neutralize the guards/guests (who may be capable fighters in their own right...at least a few would be in my games), and take this elven ranger alive, in public. at level 2. this kinda thing can work, when you're, say, level 5-10...then, you have the combat abilities to hack your way out, subdue her easily, and make your escape, dropping illusions/alchemicals behind to stop pursuit and changing your appearance back to normal, to make sure you aren't captured again... be more patient with your "snatch and grab" missions, and you'll reap the rewards... namaste, the hamster |
