Alright. I've been playing D&D for a while, and my DM wants me to make 2 new characters for a campaign. One on the good side, one on the evil (Does not have to be the extremes of the two) and I am so lost. I've done characters of every type I can think of. What I request is simple. Character concepts. Weird, off-the-wall ideas. (If you post specific classes, please include the sourcebook on them) Thanks!

Make them lovers.

One is a good-at heart, hopeful and kind person, while the other is cruel, selfish, arrogant, and rude.

Uhh, only thing, DM already said be prepared to have them fight to the death. So..why would lovers fight to the death? I meant like some decently fleshed out concepts. The personalities I like, though. =D

Well maybe the kind person wouldn't intentionally fight the other to the death, however the cruel person might dispatch thier lover if it meant accomplishing some overall goal, which might cause a change in personality afterwards.

Lovers quarrel? A triangle? Deception, lies, and misplaced trusts could culminate in a betrayel of the heart- and finally death.

Ones a paladin, one is a blackguard. Both retains feelings for eachother after one of them falls from honor.

Meh, that's what my good and evil characters are. If they have to fight, make sure that each of them has strong moral convictions about their causes. Strong enough that they would kill their loved one, but would mourn it later. Maybe even kill themselves after. First, make each side try and convince the other to change sides. Make it a real internal struggle to the characters. DM should eat it up.

Mm..good idea, but I've played Paladins, and Blackguards before. And a good portion of their variants. x_x

Nun-like character for the good character. Make her say "Wacky" before the fight ensues.

And rip off Johnny C. for the evil one.

Seriously though... Make both so that they believe their cause is the just cause. One is lawful evil. (S)He's willing to enforce the law at all costs. The other is chaotic good. (S)He is determined to make sure that everyone is taken care of and that innocents aren't harmed.

Alternately, the good char could also be lawful aligned but have a different vision of what ethics everyone should live under. They're both lawful, but their code of conduct clashes and that's where they truly come down to it.

Of course, there's the concept of the good character being socially inept to the point where everyone thinks (s)he is evil. (S)He will try to make things right, but goof the effort. This person just comes across as rotten. Whereas the evil character does good things simply to profit off them. (S)He's got blood on her/his hands, but manages to hide it well, and anyone that causes her/him too much inconvieniance meets with an accident, a "punishment from the gods" if you will. Both could well be a good roleplaying experience.

The evil guy, EG for short, is samurai (or knight would work) with a code set in stone, however, through a twist of fate he met with terrible circumstances. His 'family' was planning a coup de'etat against his master. His family, being rather large and incorporated into the politcal system thought the master inept, so they planned to remove him. Knowing their son/brother/husband (one, some, or all) was almost loyal to a fault they planned what was to happen around him, removing him from the scene of the crime.

While he was on a small errand for the family they planned the attack, and it succeeded. His family killed off the guards they couldn't buy off in a vicious attack, one that took some time. EG returns to find his master dying. The members of the family that are there, (if any) and the helpers in the coup de'etat are stunned that he is back (If family aren't there he discovers later that they were the cause and seeks revenge). After holding his master while he dies, he loses it. He has made the ultimate decision, honor.

He slays his family, or the people working for them, in an outrage. Torn and confused he becomes lost. He has no master anymore, and because of his rage he has removed his family, he has nothing. The authorities that remain know nothing of the situation because all that knew are dead or in hiding. Those that track the man and confront him with the accusation of killing his master are immediately killed. He is now a wanderer and an outlaw. He does what he must for a living, still living by what remains of his code.

During his travels he is to escort a merchant (a smuggler actually) to his destination. This is where our good guy comes in, GG for short. GG and his friend aren't exactly champions of good but they are mercenaries of good (maybe knights in their own right, soldiers, guards, something) and they hear of this smuggler (perhaps smuggling something terribly illegal) and set out to stop him.

When confronted, EG draws his weapon. GG, a bit of an oddball, goes on his rant, "Stop evil!" and what have you. EG interrupts, they can move on or die, he will not be stopped. GG begins bantering, "Now listen here, first of all I was talking-etc,etc." EG moves forward, again commenting, and telling them to ready. While GG rants his friend realizes the danger, he draws his weapon. GG is interrupted while the two begin to fight. The other guards attack GG, preventing him from reaching his friend or seeing the fight. When he finishes he sees his fallen friend and EG. EG puts his weapon away, and walks back to the caravan. GG goes to his friend and attempts to heal him but to no avail. His friend dies in his arms. Too concerned with his friend and his death, GG buries his friend where he lies, then revenge takes his mind. He starts hunting EG.

Perhaps include that they have had several encounters. GG no longer the jovial man he once was, he calls EG the murderer that the authorities do. EG tries to explain that GG's friend knew the dangers, but GG simply yells 'Shut up!' and battles ensue. There is always some intervention that stops the battle from finishing, but the rivalry remains. EG is more logical and GG more compulsive.

'Zat work?

If your still open to ideas, how about a gladitorial match?

I made the evil side, Zera the Cruel, as the first entry in the hero competition 3. It's disqualified, but you can edit it. The concept is pretty much just buff and fight, with two spells to buy time and damage the foe (insect swarm and blade barrier)

The Good side, Longinus "The Way to Dusk" Archeva, I mentioned in that thread, but didn't post, he's a lance/spear specialist who uses divine feats to synergize charisma as the main combat stat. Paladin of course.

Hmmm... anti-evil bonus in the paladin, or CoDzilla?

Wha...?

Why does your DM want you to make two characters that will have to fight each other? Making the enemies is what the DM is supposed to do I thought.

What's next? Design 4 appropriate encounters for your two characters? Build my campaign for me?

While the above poster makes a good point there could be actual reasons for this and they just aren't improtant to this at the moment.

Another idea I had that is similar to the ones here is that maybe the cruel one killed somone the kind one cared about (Previous fianc'e or lover) and then later fell in love with the killer not knowing that it was the same person, however invevitalby they would find out, then have to make the choice of being happy with their new loved one, or finding vengance for their old loved one. It could be quite interesting.

Well, I liked the LE Samurai thing, and made a decent build out of it. I don't want to deal with the whole emotional BS of being in love with myself as a PC. I just need a Good side concept to work with. We were origionally going to do 2 campaigns, and have them meet sometime in the future. PS, they are level 15 chars. (My entire party, including DM, hate having low levels characters. -_-)

Make them twins, chained together with an unbreakable chain. They counter each other in all ways, like:
if one is a bard, the other is a rouge
if one is a druid, the other is a pally
If one is a wizard, the other is a barbarian

You know you could do almost anything with these two character  they are supposed to fight each other right? Do they have to be evenly matched? What about if you make one totally tweaked and the other kinda average? Doesn't matter which side really, thats personal preferance ;)

I've often had the idea that two fighter types, going through marshal colledge at the same time and getting this goodhearted rivalry thing going would be cool for an alternative story, think of it:

They are the best of friends, both gifted, both powerful and skilled, but one slowly begins to develop the idea that power can only be attained when you sacrifice your humanity, so you could give him a whole bunch of grafts, perhaps some aqcuired templates (such as an iron golem arm and lycanthropy) and a few other things MEANWHILE Mr. alternative fellow could be off doing the normal adventure thing and prefer to remain true to the teachings he had in the colledge, purity of self and all the rest of that

Doesn't even matter if their different races :D hell, for a real spice up of things you could make the good and pure guy a half-orc and the (eventually) evil one a half-elf! that'd throw a cog into the works for the usual stereotyping and also mean that they had a reason to be friends when they both first enrolled... their half-breeds, and halfies gotta stick together!

i've got a combo for you.

Legendary Raccon Druid (Awakened Raccon with the Monster of Legend Template out of MM2).

Awakened Crab-apple Tree mercenary, hulking hurler or warhulk, I dunno.

The raccoon druid awakened the crab-apple tree since he wanted apples with him all the time as he traveled (as well as a handy place to sleep at night). However, the raccoon hates almost all humanoids (maybe... wood elves are the only things he spares).

The Crab-apple tree is more neutral (and a bit low on the wisdom) so he accepts what the Raccoon tells him about the 'evil tree-chopping' humanoids; wearing his Spiked Ironwooded (or dragon hide) magical Fullplate and a stone greatclub (or something similar).

Of course one day the raccoon has to go somewhere via a Treestride spell and has the Apple Tree stand guard in a grove while he's gone.

While this is all happening, a bunch of gnolls/orcs/goblins/undead/fiends/etc. enter the grove while the guardian Raccoon is gone and the Apple Tree starts to attack them.

The apple tree starts getting it's ass handed to him/it and just before he gets too badly hurt, a mixed racial group of adventurers come in via Greater Teleport. Since they have been scrying on the attacking group's leader and realized that now's a perfect opportunity to step in (since they realize that the raccoon is gone; everyone knows about the legendary raccoon that dominates this forest).

So, the adventurers attack the fiends/undead (really they're better choices, perhaps fiendish orcs/goblins or something) and succeed in driving them off, but not before the baddies get off some cometfalls/fireballs/meteor storms and begin to burn/level parts of the grove before they Gate out of there.

The raccoon comes back just as the fiends leave and gets furious and begins to summon all sorts of animals and begins to Animal Growth them to attack the adventuring group before the Crab apple tree steps in and tries to explain what happened.

Well, the raccoon wil have none of it and call the tree a traitor as well and just before the huge animals (via Animal Growth) the group's wizard casts an other greater teleport and one of the party members touches the Apple Tree and they all leave the hissing mad raccoon.

Fast forward a few years, the apple tree learns some more about the world and the planes, becomes a paladin/ranger that is sworn to defeat fiends/demons and while tracking down some fiends in a forest he used to inhabit realizes that he's back in the same forest he was born and got Awakened in.

And who the hell says that powergamers can't come up with a great idea?

I'll bet even a 'roleplayer' couldn't come up with something as odd as that. Then again, I'm of the opinion that most 'roleplayers' are really just insecure people who pretend that they can act; when all they do is re-hash the same stories and roles over and over again.

Oh, I'm betting you've never played an animal character before. Or a tree.

Another suggestion (I've not read all of the above) would be to have both characters know one another from childhood. Both lived through a traumatic event (could be anything from 'orcs destroy village' to 'lived in poverty in the city slums') that has made them close, but they have reacted in different ways. One has vowed never to suffer such again, the other to never allow anyone to suffer such again. Hence you have one evil, and one good.

Not only do they know each other, may even be friends or one-time lovers, they relate to each other. Tragically, each thinks the other is fundamentally flawed in their outlook. Neither actually thinks of themselves as evil or good.

Except, I find that it's true.

Most of the time, the 'roleplayers' have a very narrow field of view as to what is possible and very seldom can 'act' or 'roleplay' more than a few characters. When was the last time you saw a "hard-core 'roleplayer'" play a giant hulking brute who can't really think well, but has great force of personality and is in tune with their surroundings? or a power-mad wizard or warrior eager to use his adventuring companions as the basis of the leadership core of an army that he will eventually muster?

No, usually they want to play something that everyone else who is a 'role-player' plays. While the 'powergamer' comes up with a character with goals that tend to go beynd the scope of most games and gamers.

In general, I see more interesting builds and character concepts that I've never seen or heard of before in the CO boards that on the CD ones. The CD boards bore me with the same essential stories hashed over and over again. It's like the people there have never read any mythology or folklore and are telling me thousands year old stories thinking they're original; and if they have read the varied human mythologies, then shame on them for plagarizing and lacking in the decency to state their plagarism.

MAKE THEM SIAMESE TWINS.

Never say you've done it all ... not till you've run a group where the parties contain a guy with boobs, a talking dog psion, psionic monks who do the Worm up walls, and an elf who loathes elves (and claims he's part troll, fey and various other bits that happen to look like elves). When it comes to making characters, a dose of insanity tends to make things a bit more interesting.

As for your problem, I had an idea I never actually ran before. In one campaign, we had a Chaotic Good barbarian/frenzied beserker (with Nine Swords manuevers, to boot) who had killed a necromancer and had recieved a dying curse that he would kill anyone who learned his name. He avoided combat (always waited a round or two before joining in, typically), and never told people his name, as he was afraid of going into unstoppable rages and murdering people.
Enter my character, a teenage girl (Lawful Evil Dread Necromancer)whose village had been wiped out by the plague when she was younger. The only survivor, she was taken in by a certain necromancer as his apprentice, until the fateful day when a bloodthirsty barbarian came by and slaughtered her master and his various servants. In addition, she was attacked by said barbarian while he was too rage addled to realize she was a non-combatant, and had her arm severed and nearly died.
In current day she is a rather cheerful figure, despite her tragic past and grim work, who seeks out the barbarian who killed her master. The phrase "an eye for an eye", and the very strict belief that the rules must be followed, are centric to her life, and so she seeks out man who killed her master and maimed her, not out of vengence, but because "it's the rules". Her aim is to find someone either very important, or a teacher of sorts, to her prey, and kill them ... as well as take the barbarian's arm to settle up for her loss.

Myself, I rather like the concept ... I mean, the murder-machine barbarian who hates fighting (not so great of a concept, but it's alright), and the friendly little girl Necromancer with a murderous personal code. There's more to it than that ... but, I'll stop there for now. Gimme a yell if you like it ... I can flesh it out a bit more.

Here. Try this concept. YOu'll have to go outside of core, but it should spice things up. (plan for higher levels with this concept)

The Good Charecter: A Warmage (Complete Arcane/Miniture Handbook). He was recruited and fought in an army that was caught up in a huge war, and was loyal until a Lord ordered his team to burn down a village that they had stayed in for weeks. He refused, and killed a small squad and made his escape. He now swears that he will stop this war if it's the last thing he does. (CG)

The Evil Charecter: You are a Marshal (Mini's Handbook). You were the second in command of the army that the Warmage was in. You have been ordered to take whatever forces you can muster, and go and get the renegade Warmage. You have dedicated yourself to chasing the rumors of this mage, and to use your troops and your expert knowledge of how he works in battle to take him down. (LE)
