The amount of stuff I have is getting nuts.

My character is a gnome wizard, and whenever the rest of the party is squabbling amongst themselves (which is often) she goes looking for whatever random stuff she can find in the surroundings. And she doesn't share, because she doesn't really trust the rest of the party. (She's a very out-for-herself CN.) I was already at a medium load when at the last session one member of our party decided to get fancy with a rope trick and a bag of holding. The DM looked around the group after the battle we were in the middle of, picked me, and handed me this guy's inventory sheet, which has pushed me up over 200 pounds.

All this stuff is worth over 10k gold. We are 3rd level.

My inventory list is here (http://www.geocities.com/angelshelper81/DamiaItems.htm), if anybody wants to see it.

Once we get back to town, I intend to sell the Scimitar, turn in one or more of the letters of credit, and buy myself a bag of holding, which should mostly resolve the encumberance issue.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what, if anything, I should do about the value end of things. My character would not just give this stuff out for a couple of different reasons - the party isn't very stable right now, for one, and she doesn't trust most of the people in it, for two - but I feel odd having so much of the party's wealth.

What would you do?

Share the stuff that will help characters live - the cure pots etc. No problem with keeping the rest. If you feel bad, change your alignment so your character can behave the way you want it to. :)

Actually, we're pretty good on cure potions. I probably have the most, but I think everybody has at least 1. With 3 clerics (in a group of 10) we're okay on healing and don't actually go through too many potions.

As to alignment, I'm not changing it. I enjoy her as a CN character; I just didn't expect her to be so well-rewarded for it.

This is a huge DM error, IMO. A 3rd level party should not have more gp than xp; in fact no player should.

It could be that the DM is expecting you to spend it on needed equipment (+1 weapons for everybody) or on charity (rebuilding a town destroyed by orcs, or something like that).

However, those excuses only go so far. I'd ask the DM if there is a purpose to all this wealth. If there is, then go with the flow; if not think of creative ways to get rid of it. Buy a shovel, some parchment and ink then create treasure maps to leave for unsuspecting zero levels. Or buy a dragon and set it up for life.

Braindead..

Their party is 10 people.. all 3rd level.. their wealth they should have total FAR exceeds 10k... The Gnome isn't THAT rich. She's hording party loot, of course she's better off..

..until they find out and kill her.

I should probably find out how the other characters are doing as far as wealth. Nobody -appears- to be hurting, but I'm not sure.

I think I might see if I can find a way of tipping my Paladin buddy off that I'm carying around a lot more stuff than the others are. It'll take some poking from me and the DM, for him to realize what the LG path would be in this case, but it'd make a lot more sense than my character suddenly going all altruistic.

What we have here is a lawful good player with a (lucky) chaotic neutral character.

What would a CN character would do with this loot? First, she'd keep what she needs or can otherwise make good use of (that pearl of power I may seem fairly simple but an extra use of a level 1 spell per day can be a bacon saver for a third level wizard). Then she'd look around the group and decide who in it she likes/trusts enough to give some of the other stuff too, either because she thinks they'll use it to her benefit (a tank with a good weapon does directly benefit any wizard standing behind them, for example) or maybe she just likes them and wants them to be happy (CN doesn't mean completely selfish; that's more evil than chaotic). Anything that she can't use, doesn't want, or deem appropriate to give to other characters she'd likely sell and do whatever she wished with the profits (buy more gear, put it in a bank, loan it to a friend, etc).

If other party members have something that she wants and she has something useful to them then a trade might be in order; that scimitar might cost a bit more than a ring of protection +1, but the ring would be much more useful to a wizard and if you sell it you'll only get half market price, which is less than the price of such a ring.

A side note on that scimitar. Unless I'm gravely mistaken, it's a double weapon and double weapons require seperate enhancement for each side. Either one side of the weapon is +1 and the other isn't, or it's a +1/+1 weapon, in which case you should note that it's worth an additional 2,000gp from the second +1 enhancement. And how do you know what type of weapon it is? Unless somebody has identify and the required 100gp pearl potion per casting, how do you know what it is?

Got it in one. That's exactly what she'd do. I just feel odd hording like that. Also, at least half the group I'm playing with doesn't grasp the concept of role-play ("No, I won't use a healing potion on you." "Why?" "Because my character doesn't like you." "Huh?? What does that have to do with it?") and I personally don't want to deal with the shouting match that may well come of this. But I think I'll just suck it up, and take it as a learning experience - for them.

As to the scimitar - I'm not sure whether one side or both are enhanced. That's one of the things that was on the sheet that the DM handed to me at the end of the last session. Unless you happen to know what a 'talenta kara' is supposed to be, I'll have to find out from the DM next time exactly what it is. In character, all I know is that it's sharp, heavy, and too big for me to wield. Depending on how much those letters of credit turn out to be worth, Identify will probably be added to my spellbook next time we're in town. (The Pearl of Power isn't properly identified yet, either.)

Sorry, I was writing when my post when Angel told us there were 10 people in the party. Still, the DM made a huge mistake by allowing the wealth situation to happen in the first place.

A smart character would start buying gems. They are lighter than gold and can be used as currency. Why carry 100 gp when you can by a diamond that has the 1/100 the weight and size, but the same the value?

Not only are gems lighter, they double as spell components for certain spells.

Identify being the most likely candidate at your level.

I'm guessing from some of the names that this is an Ebberon game? If so, you may want to consider posting this over on the Ebberon board. They might be able to give you some additional suggestions. Also i apologize if i mispell Ebberon names, i don't have my book handy.

The first thing i would do is consider what the future has planed for the group. Do you guysn plan on staying on Kholivare or making an exceursion to more exotic locals in the future? If you plan to stay local, i would suggest putting a good amount of the coinage in a House Kundrak account. That way you can withdraw what you need when you are back in a city or large town that has a house facility. The weapons i would go through and decide what you really want to use. I would sell the ones you don't have proficency in. As for the Schimitar, do you have any organizations your group is inviolved in? My suggesiton would be if you don't want to give it to a party member, or sell it, is to donate it to an organization where youa re based. For examplem ,if you are based in Sharn, the City Watch would be a good choice. They get a nice shiny newm weapon for an officer or captian, any you get brownie points which may come in handy down the road a bit. Anway, just a couple ideas

Exchange your cheap/crappy/useless items for something remotely useful (but always keep +3 Cure Light Wounds potions, they're vital!) such as an immovable rod (never got why it's so cheap? You can bar any door shut (tempoarily anyway) while you run).

Both ends of the scimitar are enchanted, and there's some sort of possessing intelligence in it that creates some kind of spiritual horse (if its the one from the published modules that is). The downside is that it only works for valenar elven rangers.

When our party found the thing we traded it back to the leves it return for something we could use. If you have an unscrupulous artificier then by all means have him break it down an make you shiny stuff

10 PC's...in a published adventure!?

Wow, I was running 6, and had to scale up some things so they didn't slaughter the game.

My suggestion for the loot, if you want to keep it in game, have your character suffer from the effects of the weight, and set stuff down every so often. Forget to pick stuff up again. This works best in a dungeon crawl, where you know you have to come back through. Make sure the DM knows about stuff so he/she can mention to the players "Hey, you see a ... lying on the floor" Then just don't be the first to grab it.

That might make things fun, especially when you either identify or detect magic, and tell them it's cursed or some bad spell.

Personally, I like telling the other players that my healing potions are poisoned, but I have immunity to that kind of poison...make them think twice about drinking one of mine.

Yep, the game is insane. Remind me never to run an open-call intro-to-DnD group. That's what this started as, though it's turining into a real game. The DM has had a couple of his experienced friends come in and play to show us how it's done, but other than that my brother and I are the only ones with any concept of roleplaying beyond killing things.

I think the idea of keeping my wealth in gems is a good one. There's more than a touch of railroading going on in this game - it's the only thing keeping the group together, since nobody knows enough about roleplaying for their characters to develop friendships with each other - and I'm not willing to bet that the track we're on is going to send us through cities regularly enough for my tastes.

I think the plan is going to be to ask the Paladin to help me cary my loot back to the wagon, and take the risk of him wanting to redistribute some of it. When we get back to the town, I'm buying Identify for my spell book, and re-working my item list. Most of it will stay, but I intend to add a bag of holding and a small horde of gems.

For gold, convert all your gold to platinum. Since in D&D the same wiat of platinum is worth ten times as much as gold, it cuts down on the encumbrance for money. I wouldn't suggest gems though, since many shopkeepers will probably refuse to exchange unless it is appraised, which costs money in itself.

Well, we had the game.

I got there, and asked the DM if he knew that he'd handed me more than my max load at the end of the last session. His response was 'So? The bag of holding was on the list too, right?' and when I pointed out that it wasn't, he added it on. +2k gold for me.

And the double scimitar thing turned out to be an inteligent +1/+1 weapon. That was an extra +2.5k for me.

It did become known that I'm a rich little gnome, and it wasn't as chaotic as I though it'd be. I overheard the clerics talking about charging me (or maybe everybody, I don't know) for their services, but I doubt that that will affect things much other than maybe get everybody else mad at them and in a better mood at me, since I have a wand of cure light and know how to use it, and am generally willing to do so if there's a need. (Except for the two evil characters in the group... being buddies with the Pally is always good, you know who not to trust...)

My new and improved item list is here (http://www.geocities.com/angelshelper81/DamiaItems.htm) if anybody wants to comment. We've been being followed by a vampire and his henchmen, and they managed to **** off my character on a personal level, so she's out for bear. I'm assuming of course that my DM will allow her to have found out about vampires' weaknesses by researching durring her downtime. I'm waiting for an email back from him about that, and also whether or not he'll allow a wooden-tipped arrow to count as a stake for vampire-killing purposes. :D

Good seems like you have things well worked out, i do have a question though, is the scimitar in eberron different than the standard d&d scimitar (one handed slashing weapon) or have i been reading something wrong in my PHB all these years?
angelshelper81

06-06-05, 03:07 AM
It is a different weapon that is probably unique to Eberron. And it looks quite cool. There's actually two different Eberron scimitars - one of them has one blade, and the other has two. Kind of like the scimitar version of a longsword and a two-bladed sword.

I'd vote with the "find someone you like/trust in the group and give them some stuff" method. In an unstable group it can always be helpful to know someone really has your back. And keep the rest, money and goods can always get you out of a jam.

I pretty much have the one-trustworthy-friend bit taken care of, with the Paladin. Now I'm more concerned with the metagame task of keeping the party mostly together. I've even come up with a good in-character reason for what I want to do.

As I mentioned, that vampire has gotten on Damia's bad side. She knows full well that she can't exact revenge on him by herself, so she has a very valid reason for presenting each non-evil person (Two people chose to play evil characters. That's part of why the party is so unstable, because some people want to smite them and send them on their way, and some want to let 'em be. I'm in the first camp.) in the party with a silver weapon of their choice, a couple of vials of oil of magic weapon, a stake or two, and a holy symbol, plus the information to make them useful. That, combined with a level of generosity with the wand of cure light, should help mend things up some, I hope.

At the moment I have 1781.45 gold. 300 of that is budgeted for silver weapons for people whose e-mail addies I don't have, leaving 1,481.45g. A bit of that might go into ammo for the calculus, but I think that at this level that should be enough.
TheErsatzFacsimileOfMe

So, is there really a lack of party cohesion due to the evil PCs? Are they acting against the party? If the answer is yes, then kill them. Swiftly.

But, if you're plotting on killing the evil PCs simply because they are evil, you'd might like to think about that neutral alignment of yours. (In reference to the Good/Evil axis.)

I'm not trying to be rude, but I've seen it too many times as a DM and PC, where "goody-two-shoes PCs" just want to murder anyone in the group who isn't Good, or at least Neutral. Guess what? That's still murder unless you're defending yourself. ;)
angelshelper81

06-06-05, 11:52 PM
That comes down to motive. It's not that she wants to kill them just because they're evil. She wants to kill them because she knows that hanging around evil people without knowing exactly why they want to hang around you is a good way to wind up dead. And her skin being intact is just about the most important thing in the world to her, to the point where non-lethal preemptive strikes are not out of the question at all.

Notice the Oil of Taggit? And the rope? She's also buddies with a ninja of similar disposition with a reasonably high Use Rope score. Conspiring to drug one or both of these two and leaving them tied up in a back alley is the type of borderline-evil thing that a neutral character can get away with on occasion, I'd think.

It's the Pally who's really been angling to get them dead... but that's between him and his diety in the end. Being a godless heathen, my character can't say much to him about that bit anyway, since she knows absolutely nothing about the Paladin's code.

(And for the record, when I do finally get the game I want to run started, the Pally's player is not allowed to play a Paladin, period. He has no grasp of the morality involved. He's not a bad player, just a really poor match for that class.)

A dagger, a gnome calculus, a handaxe, a silver kukri, a longbow, a Morningstar, a quarterstaff, a rapier, a shortsword, a sling, a stake, a shield, 8 vials of acid, 4 flasks of alchemist’s fire, 5 vials of holy water, 16 flasks of Oil of Magic Weapon, and 10 potions.

You couldn’t be more encumbered if you tried.

Even assuming that ALL of the potions/oils are stowed in the backpack – all those weapons! You’re like a walking weapon’s rack!

How about making everyone else carry their OWN weapons?
angelshelper81

06-08-05, 08:56 PM
I intend to. Everything marked '(for [x])' is something that I bought durring the break and will hand out at the beginning of next session. Also 7 of the oil of magic weapon will be handed out at the beginning of the session, with the possibility of another round of seven being handed out later if necessary. (Two are for me.) The stakes are also something I intend to hand out most of.

Other than that - they're all my weapons. The longbow is my primary weapon, the calculus and flasks are for more specialized attacks, the sling is useful against skeletons (which we've been fighting a fair number of recently), the quarterstaff is for melee, and the dagger is so that I can't be caught weaponless. The only questionable thing, in my mind, is the shortsword.

*A Wizard requires the Martial Weapon Proficiency to use a longbow.
:ahem:
*Same goes for the shortsword.

*You would need the exotic weapon proficiency feat for the gnome calculus.

Why would a lvl3 Wizard burn his or her two feats to get weapon proficiency????

I can tell you exactly why you're rolling in magic and cash, angel.

As you said, this is a big game geared toward introducing players to the game. This was the exact situation I had in the Ere Campaign, which at one point sported 12 players.

The reason for the extra cash is simple and I've advised DMs to do it with large, new groups.

Basically, new players aren't as tricky as experienced players and won't think up the slick combos and tactics that would keep a vet's character alive.

But at the same time, there are ten of you, so that ramps the CR of encounters up quite a lot. So you now have deadlier encounters with characters more likely to die.

How to balance this out? Magic. A good dump of items and cash early will let the newbies survive the gauging process without unbalancing things. By the numbers, it looks like a monte haul, but that's just because of the complete lack of party unity.

Why would a lvl3 Wizard burn his or her two feats to get weapon proficiency????

Did I forget to mention? ::reads back:: Looks like I did. I multiclassed with ranger. Automatic proficiency with both. My DM ruled that I'd use the calculus as a martial weapon, being that I'm a gnome. Before I thought to ask him about that particular optional rule, I used Master's Touch when I needed accuracy with it. I think I'm going to keep the levels pretty even, too, and use the spells for defense/utility/spiffy weapon bonuses.
