idea to help not get caught [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-08-06, 04:02 AM Heres the situation (the particulars that got me into this arnt exactly the smartest.. but neither is my character, especally my character with a hot temper). So basic of the situation, i have a barb lvl 4. and he being hot headed and evil (future ambition if makes it alive is to become a saint or w/e of an evil god, so yeah know... when someone says something rude, you like to get revenge of sorts) got him into this. its a war campain, demons or devils have taken over, and we our characters were recruited by the army to help take them out (we have 3 chars total, and get to switch between missions, so id rather not my guy to die.. but not the biggest loss if he does). one of the other PC chars ****** him off so he doing the whole sneak in and kill. so he knows there are assisan demons out, which can teleport at will... he went in killed the PC, other guys in the tent of course wake up and yell bloddy murder. so my guy runs out (stupid to have the still bloddy weapon), starts running another direction point yelling the assisans, fails bluff check (was really close, buti rolled low.. might have made it if one of the bluff DC went my way, but i got a 0 adjust cus i was "running away".. i argued well the assiasns demons can blink.. but thats o well. thats just the way the dice roll). NOW my biggest assest right now is i was able to acquision a hat of disguise. so im no in my real form right now... though an after of the fact description apprently soldiers are also sleeping outside the tents... i was assuming they were all inside.. so the soldiers outside are starting to wake up.. see me running and pointing me out... so with failed bluff check of them not beliving me im going to have to run and attempt to find a safe spot to change disguses... right now my best asset is the faster than running speed due to barb... and my hat... i also get action points, and used as in unearth arcana, so anything in there u can use them on.. i can use them on. i have most mundane equipment, and what not.. so thats what im working with as far as items. (also have handy sack to help)... so far my best idea beside attempt to flat outrun (even with speed, and using action points to gain run, i doubt ill be able to run past most), is pool out a smoke stick, as running light on a nearby torch... run behind a tent, then useing another standard action changing... then either A. use tangle foot bagon myself, stabbing myself with a dagger, or using alchemist fire to start a tent fire... though besides the running option id run into my 0 rank in bluff, and poor charisma skill.. so this also brings into question.. assuming when im questioned.. i dont lie, do they get a sense motive to figure im avoiding the question? IE. they asked what happen i say... "someone screamed assisan.. then there was smoke, and then i get stabbed" IE i didnt lie, but im not exactly forthcoming either. also.. assuming ido get caught in a lie.. i could say "i knew the person who did it (it was me), that i knew them all my life (also you know yourself all your life), that i wanted him to not die (most chars dont want to die)..." this one again would all be true, though would this one require bluff check?

so yeah.. any other ideas? suggestions? bad sitution i know.. but i know there has to be a way out of it. (also any other places in a camp in an army would have i think could also help out... the dm hasnt accually drawn up the camp (because besides my char being stupid. as of right now it was more a mundane thing), so im not quite sure where what is what in relation to each other.)

also as it might have been done incorrectly.. a listen check is -10 when sleeping. what do you think a sleep char would have to make to listen to me doing a coup de grace... (i used a orc great axe instead of dagger.. again dumb move on my part) so itd probably be w/e sound it is of cutting a head off.. but what check would this be?
also since i mean as written in the rules.. its -10 for sleep... 0 dc for talking, and if u beat it by 10 you understand the speech.. so does that mean that they would have to roll a 10 to understand the speech that was said? (with -10 to roll effectivly making it a 20.. thus they probably heard something, but didnt know hwat was said?) also i mean most ppl doing get up right away, so what do u think it would be for people to get up?

Me barb... me kill guy, wakes up others in tent. Apprently sleeping soldiers outside hear this, i fail my bluff check for them to not suspect me. Thus i need to get away... Items at disposle, hat of disguise, handy haversack, and most mundane items (caltrops, adventure gear, smokestick, alchemist fire, tanglefoot bag the like). Little more specificly im running away from them, there are soliders outside that are pointing me out, so i really need to get away long enough and not seen enough to use my hat... action points are avaiable and can be used in anyway as described in book of unearthed arcana, so the extra standard action is avialable. also any ideas invovling locations a typical camp would have might also be worthy, as they could potentially be close to my current location (current camp has not yet been drawn up). Most gaurds that are awake, are on the parameter (sp) watching for the enemy.

as far as the skill questions... what do you think the dc would be to listen for a coup de grace.. with weapon itd probably be more execution style of 2 handed weapon choppin of the head. (they are sleeping so ill figure up the -10 later) also what about as far as gaurds outside (cept theres would be to hear someone yelling so thats what? dc 0 with a +1 per 10 feet, again add in the -10 later)

also on the note of sleeping.. what do you think would be the rules for typical waking up? i mean usually when i wake up im a little distorted, and kinda tend to forget stuff easily if something was said when i first wake up... and also how fast do you think it would take for a sleep soldier to be able to get up and start chasing someone? (i mean technicly itd be like wake up, assuming thats free, stand up which is move, then a standard action to do a real move to chase me, but really i think as far as just waking up for most people thats a bit fast. i mean so your in bed then your immediatly wake up and start chasing someone in 6 seconds?)

Next is question about bluff... if you specificly dont lie, but more so.. word around what is being asked, does that require a bluff check, though probably with a bonus? i mean you didnt lie, but wernt exactly forth coming... also again wording to describe yourself, but with wording makes it seem like you are talking to someone else (i described what id probably say in the above paragraph, so you can read it there.. its near the bottom)

01-09-06, 11:22 PM First, you are hard as hell to understand.

Second, I don't know what you mean by a "listen check on a coup de grace", but if you mean a DC for him sleeping and you sneaking up on him, it'd be a move silently check for the character, and a listen check for the sleeper. If you aren't sneaking, I'd say a listen check for a DC of about 15.

Third, it would depend on how far away the guards are to hear the scream. BUT, also depending on how far away they are, then may hear steel ringing across someones skull when dicing through someone head.

Fourth, upon waking, I'd give a surprise round to the runner because the guard was asleep, and then the next regular round he would get lets say -4 to all attacks and damage, but next round he should be up and running.

You must remember guards and soldiers and the like are trained to jump to life at a moments notice.

And last, I would say it's still a bluff check because I consider bluff to be getting ones mind away from the truth, and although you wouldn't outright lie, you'd be dancing around the question. You could also make it an inteliegence check to see if he realizes you aren't answering his questions.
