| Nor'Morgwae04-04-06, 06:44 PM | How serious are we talking? Are dog jokes okay or are you expecting an Oscar for your portrayal of a Gnoll? I think Gnoll is all barks and growls isn't it? If so, then how about names like wookiee names. Transliterate the barks into common and then make it sound a little cooler. You feel a little silly acting like a dog then righting it down, but it could be good. Examples: Bakkrakka (bark barka), Grakka (growl bark), Cherkiba (Half-bark, Bark), Kabarak (double bark) Ya' see? Continuing with the wookie-esque them, maybe you can't speek common. Ok, so this is mostly just an excuse to bark at the gaming table. Just bark and pass a translation note around to anyone who speaks Gnoll. Since you have monk levels your fighting style could be very different. Incorporate a very bestial/canine style to it. Pounce and stalk and howl. Does that give you some ideas? |

| Lincoln Hills04-05-06, 03:13 PM | He is a LN lv2 ranger/ lv3 monk gnoll Aim for something in the Tarzan area: your character is civilized on the outside, quiet and well-spoken and struggling to maintain his discipline. But inside - he can hear the war-drums. He loves the smell of smoke and the sound of battle-cries. While most LN characters are stern and unyielding, this fellow might have more sympathy for chaotic types than most. Often he envies his human/dwarf/whatever companions - it all seems so easy for them: they know how silverware and traffic right-of-way and commerce work, while your gnoll character struggles with such things. |
| Draco Strang04-05-06, 05:12 PM | What sort of lawful is your gnoll? Is this a garden-variety evil gnoll, or are we pushing for neutral or *gasp* good? Alignment goes a long way towards dictating style of play. Since he's lawful, one could safely assume that he's methodical, and possibly very patient. This fits well with both your monk and gnoll aspects, because hunters often lie in wait for hours, seeking the proper chance to tear out something's throat. However, patience and a methodology don't imply tranquility and inner peace. Is your gnoll still sort of bestial, with a short fuse? Maybe the only things keeping his violence in check are his monk training and the patience borne out of tracking, stalking, and hunting. This sort of character would always want to fly into a blood frenzy, but realize that there's a time and place for such behavior. On the other hand, maybe your gnoll character is at peace with himself on a level that matches the Dhali Lhama. Has his neutrality and monastic training purged his mind and soul of all inner turmoil? Maybe he's just keeping it real. So, my suggestions boil down to two things: A really calm, thoughtful, and patient character that just happens to be a gnoll, or a bloodthirsty gnoll whose brutality is barely tempered by a shell of discipline. Good luck. |

| Varia04-06-06, 01:47 AM | Off the topic, but a question to check my maths, since I'm still new to 3.5- Am I right in thinking that this gnoll counts as a lvl 8 character? 2 for ranger levels, 3 for monk levels, 2 for his humanoid levels and 1 for the level adjustment for gnolls? *Hugs* Varia |
| Nor'Morgwae04-06-06, 02:41 AM | Your maths look pretty good to me. I like the image of a gnoll monk sitting quietly in a grassy.... Oh, I won't do it. |
| Varia04-06-06, 03:06 AM | Do It!!! |

| SiouLubb04-06-06, 03:50 PM | When Kennedy was killed, there are still those who say they saw shots come from the grassy gnoll. |
| Whisper_Swiftblade04-06-06, 07:26 PM | do you think making him a drunken master later on would be a good idea? |
| Nor'Morgwae04-06-06, 11:56 PM | It would certainly be funny. Beyond that I'm not sure giving a Gnoll a lot of alcohol is a good idea. If you want people to take the character seriously then no. If you want to play one of the most awsome characters ever then yes, yes to the power of 10. That almost sounds like an album. Yes: To the power of 10 |
| Whisper_Swiftblade04-07-06, 03:50 PM | I think I will opt for "one of the most awsome characters ever" idea |
| Whisper_Swiftblade04-07-06, 06:07 PM | do you think I should pick a tattooed monk insted. |
| Count Arioch the 28th04-07-06, 09:10 PM | do you think I should pick a tattooed monk insted. No. Friends don't let friends take tattooed monk. |
| ZUL_HELLBRINGER04-07-06, 10:48 PM | Back in the old edition there was the flind or gnoll leaders or was it bugbears?? They were using a flindbar, a kind of three section staff very monk like weapon. What about a magekiller with a three section staff bent on ruining the day of every frail spellcaster around. Even better a gnoll with two immovable rod as weapons. Pin down the wizard, put the rod on his back and let him try making concentration checks while you beat the crap out of him. For great picture inspiration look for the first art in the sharn city of towers book. |
| Starman IX04-08-06, 12:19 AM | When Kennedy was killed, there are still those who say they saw shots come from the grassy knoll.Fixed. |
| Grunj04-08-06, 09:13 PM | One of the players in my game is playing a Gnoll Ranger 3 (ECL 6). The character's favored enemy is humans. Alignment is chaotic neutral. The Gnoll really doesn't like humans ("pinkies") but is not a raving lunatic about it. Instead, she (that's right, count the teats) works as a bounty hunter. That way she gets to beat up and kill humans and get paid for it by other humans. What could be sweeter? Her schtick is dual-wielded battleaxes or a spiked chain if she wants to bring 'em back alive or just play with her food before eating. |
