| Worshiper_of_Moradin07-07-07, 12:04 AM | What is the DC for normal magic items? Stuff like Boots of Elven kind or a +3Longsword. Is it 25 like for a potion or can you not use spellcraft for that? |
| FWHGilby07-07-07, 12:58 AM | nope, gotta use identify. If I was outta my mind I'd let someone use spellcraft and knowledge(arcana), but the dc would be something like 200 for both |
| Loki565407-07-07, 02:06 AM | While it is not directly possible to identify items other than scrolls and potions with a simple Spellcraft check, it is possible to combine a detect magic (or similar effect) with a Spellcraft check to identify the aura of such items. Depending on the aura type and strength, you can then make the decision whether to activate the item blindly or wait until you can have it identified. |
| MerlintheTuna07-07-07, 03:02 AM | The DC is best described as pointlessly high. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/skills.htm#spellcraft) |
| JulesCARV07-07-07, 03:19 AM | Artificers can do it without epic rules, I think, but not others. Look at the artificer entry in the Eberron Campaign Setting for more info. |
| Ralp07-07-07, 03:24 AM | This seems like a good place to mention the Artificer's Monocle in Magic Item Compendium (reprinted from Magic of Eberron I assume). It costs 1,500 gp and, if you have 5 ranks in Knowledge (Arcana), lets you identify (as the spell) any item by studying it for one minute after checking out its aura under detect magic. Artificers don't even need to cast the spell or have the knowledge ranks. |
