...what would be some fun and/or useful magical items to select for him?

I may have the opportunity to take my pick of a number of low to mid-level magical items shortly with my Gnome Bard, and if I'm guessing right, the DM may just be planning to allow us any reasonable requests. So what sort of stuff would you go for?

You can never go wrong with a Lyre of Building and a Heward's Handy Haversack.

the flute of the sewers, really.

it is very fun to be the hamelin fluteman once or twice per sesion and in 3.0 was a very powerful item combined with the aid another combat option.

Any item "of the Nymph" (usually Cloak). Anything to boost Charisma is always nice.

Anything that will boost your charisma is always a good thing, like a cloak of charisma :)

Strings of Spell storing if using a string instrument (allows you to store up to 6 levels of spells in it using a perform check), is always handy to keep backup spells

Ring of Cacophony - gives you D6 points of sonic damage when when worn and used in conjunction with a non magical weapon (Fortissimo is a good spell to use with this). Very handy if you don't use a magical weapon.

My bard got his hands on a lyre of building, but died before he could use it.

Oh, the joy of the lyre of building when wielded by a competent bard!

I would put it at the TOP of your list. It's good for all sorts of things---stairs, fortifications, etc.

Utility magic is always good.
Heward's Handy Haversack.
Traveller's Cloak.

Boost up your Charisma score, like alread said.
Lyre of Building is a good one too.
How about comission a wonderous item statue that lets you use Greater Image once per day or so to make your own virtual accompaning actors and musicians?

I think Wes ought to take a crack at that one...

If you want to be even more know-it-all-type, then Heaband of the Binder could be your choise. It improves your Bardic Knowledge check (and gives couple of Read Magic's per day).
