If you were to choose one supplementary WOTC book to use outside of the core of the DMG, Players handbook and MM as a player character in a campaign, what would it be?

I'm asking because the issue has sort of come up since I recently joined a campaign as a bard where no players seem to have any non-core books available. Yet it seems like there doesn't seem much in the core books that allow you to improve or customize any unique bard skills, making it seem pretty limited in some ways just using the core books. I can probably go out and buy a suplement to help my character, but I definitely don't want to buy multiple books just to make a character work well. Based off the type of characters I tend to play in general (usually Rogues, Rangers and Bards), I think the Complete Adventurer is probably the most useful.

Anyway, I just got me thinking as to what everyone else thought the most generally useful supplement to the core books is as a player character.

I tend to look at the game world in degrees of smashing and needing to be smashed, so, Complete Warrior for me. The Arcane Strike feat in that book could be useful for bards that need to get their smash on. :fight!:

If you count the complete series as one book then them. Otherwise Magic of incarnum.

Either the Spell compendium or races of the wild.

Spell Compendium would be great for rangers and bards.
Complete Arcane is great for bards.
Complete Adventurer is okay for bards, great for rogues.

Spell Compendium (1,000+ spells in one book) :ayyyy!:

Complete Warrior (DnD war rules, gladiator fights, archery contests, you don't have to be a tank to enjoy it!)
Helmed Horror

Expanded Psionics Handbook <-- Many will argue this "IS" a core rulebook ;)

The Complete Series (although it isnt 1 book) <--- Invaluable tools for character creation in all of them.

Spell Compendium <-- A no brainer here... an encyclopedia of spells is always a good thing to have.

meh... the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting/Ebberron Campagin Setting books arent necessary as chosing one book... after you a have a bunch of books sure, go ahead and dive right into the vast sea of new materials for campaigns, but to me, although filled with great ideas, they are really best used by a DM, or heavy RP groups.

So in conclusion, I'm guessing as a player character would be expanded psionics handbook. I am assuming you dont have a character at the moment in a campaign, or your campaign is winding to a close. Now if you just starting out in a fresh new campaign and eager to try out your new mage, and figure you will use him for a long time... pehaps your money is best used for the Spell Compendium.

Expanded Psionics Handbook. The Mind Flayer, Aboleth, and Gith races don't have "Psionics" because it sounds cool, they have it because it is cool.

hmmmm either Complete Arcane, because I really like Warlocks, or Races of Destiny because I really like half-elves

Expanded Psionics Handbook 3.5 hands down. I consider it Core Book 4 as it appears in the SRD.

Meh. I'm one for the Complete Adventurer myself, it's the first non-core book I got. Currently I'm shooting for the complete Complete Series, but Expanded Psionics is definatly a good choice as well. If you're not really one for psionics, then Unearthed Arcana.

I consider the Expanded Psionics Handbook to be one of the core books (it's in the SRD), but if you don't, then that would hands-down be my choice. No questions asked, it is the best book WotC has published since 3.5 came out.

Since, however, I DO consider it core, the first noncore book I'd take would either be the Eberron Campaign Setting (easily the second-best book ever published by WotC) or Magic of Incarnum. I might consider the Stronghold Builder's Guide in certain cases as well.

I like Unearthed Arcana, but I don't list it here since that's in the SRD as well.

I MIGHT have considered the Spell Compendium if they didn't power up every single spell they reprinted, and if they hadn't ported some of the strongest Forgotten Realms spells into D&D general with it. I'm sorry, clerics, druids, and wizards did NOT need the power surge. If it had just been an encyclopedia instead of an "upgrade" I'd have included it here.

I would probably have to say Complete Adventurer.

Although; I am really starting to dig Tome of Magic: pact, shadow, and truename.
