I'd much rather answer your questions here. They quite surely can't be that embarrassing.

New players should get themselves a copy of the Players Handbook at the very least. This book pretty much covers all of the fundamental rules (and some of the advanced rules) involved in playing D&D.
Assuming you have that, trying to find yourself a DM (Dungeon Master, if you didn't know) who already knows the game and can guide you through the basic rules would be the best step to follow; with getting yourself a DM, you guarantee yourself both a mentor and a game to play in with others.

The best way to look for DM's that like playing over IM programs (on these boards, at least) is to go here, (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=598) and either look for a request that you find suitable, or post one yourself. Don't forget to mention that you're new; some games may be too... involved for inexperienced players.

If you have any specific problems, don't hesitate to post them.

For the rulebooks, you can get the SRD (System Reference Document) online as a free download from here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd).

If you still (sigh) want to play D&D, go here (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=500) instead. The D&D SRD is available from here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35).

Oh, and a good online die rolling site is to be found at Invisible Castle (http://invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py).

If you go on to any of these gaming boards, make sure to read the stickies (at the top of the boards) thoroughly before posting any "how does this work?" threads.
