Aside from the fact that Kaleron (Lawful Good Fighter) bluffed, mentioning he was attacked first by the prince, to save his hide. He found himself in a barred cell, fortunately with his equipment, minus weapons.

How does one escape?

Something to keep in mind: Bars are magically electrified.
Another thing to keep in mind: Str 16

Tried methods:

1: Wrap rope around two bars and using a hammer Kaleron happened to have do the Jackie Chan twisty thing to bend the bars (use the handle of the hammer to twist the rope up so eventually it will pull the bars together. Did not work.

2: Wrap rope around 2 bars in an alternate fashion providing a loop to hook the hammer into the middle of the loop and twist it repeatedly until the wound rope constricts pulling the 2 bars closer to one another.

3: Hammering a piton into the ground next to the bars, which in theory, would have created a significant ground so the magically electrified bars could be shorted out... However upon hammering, Kaleron found that the ground was impenetrable.

Findings. Privvy (sp?) to information, such as the bars were made of adamantite apparently they are far beyond the strength capabilities of this fighter.

Currently:
A fellow adventurer has been able to return and using a piton and the hammer has begun hammering out the pins in the hinges from the outside. (as the gate opens outward and it would be very difficult avoiding the bars' electric surprise and remove the pins as well.) when he, fellow adventurer, has to high tail it to avoid capture.

interesting site I found illustrates the possibility of method 1.
http://www.open2.net/science/hollywood_science/shangi.htm

so assuming the hammer is roughly 15cm long, that's .4* strength of adamantite... effectively reducing the strength of the bar by more than half. so if it took 200 lbs of force to bend the bars, through this method it would take only 80. Unfortunately Kaleron doesn't have a crowbar measuring perhaps 60cm... if used in the illustrated method on the aforementioned site, it would only take 40 lbs of torque to exert 200 lbs of pulling power. Out of curiosity... What's the strength of adamantite?

Adamantine bars = Strong enough.

Wouldn't your wet cloth conduct the electricity, causing you to electrocute yourself while wrapping the cloth around the bars?

Mind elaborating a little on the "strong enough" response?

Apparently metal doesn't conduct this "magic electricity" now that doesn't exclude a moist cloth, but Kaleron was using rope doubled over several times to provide the strength.

Any suggestions on what Kaleron could do to escape then?

He means, "strong enough to prevent #1 from working". I'm not aware that there IS a stated stregnth (ie. rockwell hardness) for Adamantine.

Your best bet is to try to use the rope and some of your equipment and grapple the guard, pulling him against the bars. Then, keep him there somehow till he dies. Take the key, free yourself, and run like the dickens!

Oh... and when he escapes, what is the possibility of removing the pins from the hinges and disappearing with a adamantine gate? Hmmm??? that'd fetch a pretty penny huh? Besides, I'm sure he could use the metal to get a new bastard sword made seein how he's lost his current one.

Funny you should mention roping the guard... It's a big dog... that breathes fire and licks up burning oil (don't ask).

Who feeds you? They should have a key. And is the fire-breathing dog able to be roped? Is the key around his collar?

You need to get as much detail as you can. Either that, or the DM is just railroading you, and it's better to wait for an opportunity to present itself.

Well given Kaleron's rope use, it'd be very unlikely, but it's not impossible. However, when he does, the dog may be able to pull him easier than he pull the dog, and no key. Haven't been fed as he's just now been imprisoned. I guess he is bein railroaded... the topic came up after the game had ended. Nothing ventured, nothing gained though, so maybe it'd be worth an attempt to lasso the dog and choke it to death... Whatever. I think I'll take that advice. Kaleron will wait for the opportunity... good thing is the gate opens outward so maybe he can give it a good bash to KO the guard.

get sick. throw up. take a little of that electrical damage. burn yourself. sleep cold and wet.

if there is no way out of the room you are in, get transfered to a different room. maybe there is a better chance of escaping from the infirmary, cleric's house, etc. than the cell.

Pretend to be a relative of the guard. OR....feed the guard to the dog!

But it sounds like railroading to me.

I can't find a break DC for adamantine bars or an adamantine door, but the break DC for bending iron bars is 24. So you'd need a 24 on a Str check to bend them.

Since adamantine is supposed to be alot stronger, I'd say the DC would be at least 10 higher or so. But that would be an ad hoc adjustment that the DM would need to make.

I'd probably give you a +10 circumstance bonus to bend bars in the method you've described, but I doubt most D&D characters would know enough about physics to know how to do that. Perhaps a character with ranks in Knowledge: Engineering or Architecture would, but not your average adventurer.

So if I were the DM and someone tried that, I'd probably assign a DC 20 Knowledge check to even know how to do it, and unless they'd actually witnessed someone do the same thing "in character" or made the check I'd tell them their character doesn't know how to do that.

Ahh... so true. I was wondering if anyone would catch on to that. You're absolutely right, and I doubt an intelligence of 12 would warrant any knowledge of physics. But he allowed it and despite my best efforts poor rolls cost me any chance of succeeding... However Next adventure I'm equipping Kaleron w/ block and tackle, crowbar, and about 20 other useful items... maybe extend the rope to 100 ft silk. (I think the current rope he's using is just hemp). Thanks for everyone's thoughts.
