I was talking to a friend today about the Imp. Tough. feat and I think i have it wrong.

The book says that:
You gain the number of hit dice equal to your current Hit Dice. Each time you gain an HD, you gain 1 additional hit point. If you lose an HD you lose 1 hit point permantly

I interpreted that as if you hit dice is 10 (fighter) you get to add 10 to your total HP at 1st level and 1 extra hp at each next level

My friend said that you gain 1 extra hit point at first level after you get max HP + con, when determining your Hit Points

Now i am confused. Help

:: DETAILED EXPLANATION WITH NUMBERS ::

err...still confused...gonna clairfy more

[ASSUME: rolled max HP at each Level, Con. Mod: +1]

What i think:
1st Level Fighter w/ Toughness -- HP: 10 + 1 + 3 = 14
1st Level Fighter w/ Improved Toughness-- HP: 10 + 1 + 10 = 21

2nd Level Fighter w/ Toughness -- HP: 14 + 10 + 1 = 25
2nd Level Fighter w/ Improved Toughness-- HP: 21 + 10 + 1 + 1 = 33

3rd Level Fighter w/ Toughness -- HP: 25 + 10 + 1 = 36
3rd Level Fighter w/ Improved Toughness-- HP: 33 + 10 + 1 + 1 = 45

----

What my friend says:
1st Level Fighter w/ Toughness -- HP: 10 + 1 + 3 = 14
1st Level Fighter w/ Improved Toughness-- HP: 10 + 1 + 1 = 12

2nd Level Fighter w/ Toughness -- HP: 14 + 10 + 1 = 25
2nd Level Fighter w/ Improved Toughness-- HP: 12 + 10 + 1 + 1 = 24

3rd Level Fighter w/ Toughness -- HP: 25 + 10 + 1 = 36
3rd Level Fighter w/ Improved Toughness-- HP: 24 + 10 + 1 + 1 = 36

Either you misquoted or they misprinted. It should read:

You gain a number of hit points equal to your hit die, and then 1 hit point each new level...

In other words a 9th level whatever gains 9 hp when they take the feat, and then a hit point a level thereafter.

my mistake, yea the book says "You gain a number of hit points equal to your current hit dice..."

so your saying at lv 1, you get +1 to hp and another +1 at the next level, and so forth

but taking this at lv 4, you would gain +4 to hp and +1 at each there thereafter?

That is right.

In other words, for the purposes of Hit Points, treat your constitution as if it was 2 points higher.

this is how I've always played it.

For all practical purposes, these are all correct.

It is a very nice feat, one of the best.

Just to clear up one apparent point of confusion: Whenever rules refer to your Hit Dice, it generally means the number of HD you have, not their type.

Yes, and you don't get the bonus for levels where you don't have any HD (LA).

what is an example of that...(i am still pretty noobish to DnD, if you hadn't guessed)

Take a bugbear, 3 HD and then a ECL of +1. If you were 6th level and took Improved Toughness. You would only get +5 hit points. You would have 2 class levels and then 3 racial HD. You basically lose a HD for every ECL +.

Hope that helps.
