Here is the situation. My weaponsmith (Human Transmuter) has been adventuring with a group for some time. The group had originally started with a human dressed in mithral full-plate and wielding a fullblade. Beginning the adventure we came to an abandoned temple, there was a portal device that used a gem to focus power and activate the portal. For whatever reason theis char and another in the group decided to make off with the gem while the rest of us left the place (causing me to hold them in contempt). Later on arriving to town we had a severely injured party member whom I had taken to my char's home so he could rest/recover (we had no healer). We had paired off me with this char, so after taking the extra party member and getting him situated at my home, I told the fullblade user to watch over him while I checked thru my home (5 min max). As soon as I left the room he left to go collect the reward for removing some bandits (we had already sent 2 party members to do this and we had concerns with someone attacking our downed party member while he was helpless). Thru out the corse of the adventure we had come across an old dragon forge (which the portal went to) which had an intelligent fullblade that severly hated humans (Dragons and Humans fought a 100-200yr war a few thousand years ago) this char being the only one using a fullblade took it up and then proceeded to attack another person in the group (the injured party member before). Well we beat him down and found out about the intelligent weapon, then threw the weapon in a volcano. Somepoint between the temple and the forge I had asked our friend about the people after him, and basically there were church sponsored assassins after him. This same group is also after my char because he is a wizard (this church preaches that wizards are evil and consort with dragons (which are considered evil due to the war) and such). Later on the char in question admits to being a cleric (of said church) and has been casting cleric spells. Later on he actually killed the party member being hunted, we found out it was someone elses fault tho. My char really didnt like his at this point and went as far as forbiding him from entering my home and confronting the char in question. Shortly after my questioning (with suspicious answers) he left the group.

We continued for some time the player switching chars almost every game session, and now his most recent char is and elf in mithral full-plate wielding a fullblade. My char knows that fullblades are a VERY rare weapon (he is a weaponsmith) to be used anywhere, add in the fact its the same type and style of armor, then add in the same player playing this char keeping up with some of the same mannerisms and what not of the original char. It seems like it is the same char as before, or possibly someone related (not by blood) to the original. Also this player likes to play elves (the only one actually) for whatever reason, but ends up making mistakes that do not put him in good graces with the group and/or world at large (I remember him repeated asking what dangerous meant (he had a high intelligence In and out of char) until the person he was asking started to threaten him). Based on this my char doesnt have a high opinion on elves in general.

My question: If you were in my shoes how would you treat this char (in char). The weaponsmith is "Undecided" in alignment with some lawful and good tendencies (ive just been playing the char until the DM decides on an appropriate alignment. Personally I have been openly disliking and hostle to his new char, due to my char's history with a VERY similar char. Thanks for any replies and sorry for the partial rant.

Has this new character done anything to annoy you? If so that feeds into your bias/suspisions. Go with it.

If not, you have to decide if your character is the "I'll give them a chance until they prove otherwise" type of guy, and act accordingly.

Back in my younger days one of my other friends and I had a running enmity between characters. The campaign was fairly lethal, so there was a pretty high turnover rate. Anyway, I started the whole thing because my character was a selfish jerk (it was early in my roleplaying life, so please forgive the idiocy of this char). My thief picked his pocket and stole his material component pouch because that was what he did for kicks. His char got :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored::censored:, mine did some more selfish stuff and got kicked out of the group and ended up dying alone in the wilderness. Well, my friend decided that my next character needed to pay for the sins of his predecessor. Then I got back his next character for that and so on in a viscious cycle.

Even if it is in-character for your char to hate his new one, I advise giving him a chance. That slight metagaming can help avoid a nasty circle of hate that can really detract from the game.

 to Sildatorak. Excellent advice.

Isn't it hard to admitt when you've been a stupid jerk? Wish I had that kind of guts.
What's good for the game may not be what's good for your character.

I'm going to adjust his charactersheet and write up a background for him. So that he would have had a reason for being where the group was. Because all this hostility between your character and his for no GOOD (in character) reason. Is not fair.

So you guys think I should give this new char a chance? What about the next one with the same set up, but with a different name, face, race? I decided to just settle on not liking the char because something about him bothers me. There are some people that just strike you that way in life right?

Keep refering to his new character by his old character's name. If you are corrected say something like, "Oh yeah, I forgot you were so cheesy you made the same character but with a different name." Every once in a while say something, "I thought this guy left the party, what's he doing back?" When you are corrected about this being a different guy, see above. Repeat and rinse. :D

I guess I will have to take care of this in my own little way....

Don't do this. Bad table manners, at the very least.

Some people just make my left eye :twitch:. However, if you do this, don't actively hamper the other character. Just general surlyness will suffice.

In that case, make the player write his own background, then twist it for plot hooks and other wonderful annoying things. Let LordChronos and the other player decide how they are is going to react to eachother.

Or is this a DMPC?

Nope. It's another players PC. But he decided not to give any background. Even after I asked that players generate a background. So that I could possibly add some elements of it into the campaign. But he rarely does this, and this time he actually brought up one point. And that was to be the grandson of a deity. But I told him that wasn't allowable. So I will generate a solid background for him so that he A) Had a purpose of being where he was when he encountered the party. B) Have some "base" for RP purposes because he is rather unexperianced in that aspect. And hopefully help him in his relations with the other players characters.

LordChronos and I have spoken about this already. And I gave him my opinion on the matter. Because it is more of a personal Player to Player problem. Not Character to Character. And he admitted it was more of a personal dislike of how the other character plays, but I guess he is adamant about having a negative relationship "in character". So I'll just try to shape up the other player so that hopefully the two characters are less abbrasive.

Or I guess I could take the easy route and just kill one or both of them.
