Hi. This is a problem that I'm currently experiencing with my DM, in whose games I've played in for a long time and always had a blast until now.

He's running an evil game, and at the moment the party is split up. The bulk of the party are involved in a dungeon crawl, while one player is pursuing his character's agenda, and my character is trying to gather some errrr "material components" (hehe, yeah, that's a good name for them) that we need to give to a demon in return for answers to some questions. I realized from the get-go that combats and dungeon crawls will consume the bulk of the game night, and my character's (and the other player's) activities will be secondary. I emailed the DM my character's plan and what she would be up to, so that he wouldn't have to make up things on the fly at the same time as he's running a dungeon crawl, and we could get my activities out of the way quickly.

My plan however fell by the wayside, as the entire session was devoted to the dungeon crawl, and I got 5 minutes of my DM's attention, only to get "Ok, you ride for a whole day, then camp at night, then what?" and my response "well, cast Rope Trick and sleep". Bang. That was the extent of my activity during the game, and since we left off in the middle of combat I have no reason to doubt that most of the next session will be entirely dungeon crawl as well, which means that there will be two sessions in which I'm present but my character is not doing anything and not earning exp.

Both the DM and me are pretty busy the rest of the time, so I know I can't ask to play out my character's activities online or in a one-on-one session, and at the same time I don't want the rest of the players to get bored while we interrupt their dungeon crawl. Any suggestions? Is it too forward to ask for DM's attention, or ask to play an NPC to fight against the party?

Either in the up coming session, or the following one, have the entire time devoted to yourself, and the other straggler. This will hopefully wrap things up for you two, and you can rejoin the party.

Have some pity on your DM. I hate when my players want to go in three different directions, or "Divide & Conquer". Sure, you should have been given much more time on your character's story than the last 5 min of the game, but who's idea was it to split up anyway?

Man thats a tough situation to be in, dont worry your not alone, usually the recent games ive played have been the same with me and i hate when i get no exp and the other players get it all just becuase the DM hasnt thought of an exact compelling story for my character, so i walk in the town in a circle all day pretty much.Your just role playing correctly though and in my opinion you should recieved just as much in exp for "Behind the scenes" activities. To bad you cant have 2 characters and have one who is evil as well, youll have fun but the only problem is, is how you will be behind in exp, i was thinking of doing that in my campaign but i dont want to have 2 level 5 when everyone else is level 7 almost 8. Im sorry i cant suggest anything, but maybe you get an idea similar to the ones stated above.
