Infernal lang? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-20-06, 03:24 AM umm i dunno if anyone knows where to find it but id like to know a few words of the infernal language and some symbols too to have for my char so it adds realism when he uses baleful utterance and his weapon that has infernal runes on it... if anyone knows where to find some let me know... thanx!

However, if you want a language that sounds significant, Latin's a good one. Pick some phrases you like and practice with them until you're comfortable enough with the pronunciation that you can say 'em with some power in your voice. One phrase I started to like a lot after watching Event Horizon was Liberate Tuteme ex Inferis.

As for runic-looking script, check out the letters of the Hebrew alphabet (http://www.hanefesh.com/edu/Hebrew_Alphabet.htm). Etched along the blade of a sword with a dim red glow, I think those could look pretty ominous and powerful.

"Diever-ahs Dinktra difrum'shkee..."

02-21-06, 06:47 AM None of the languages spoken in D&D actually exist. You can use Tolkien's Elvish for Elven, and a few words have been made up for Draconic, but that's it.

Usually, when I have to differentiate between languages, I'll alter my voice to fit the stereotypes of that language, as a sort of symbolic "speaking" of it. For Orc I typically do something gruff and broken. For Infernal, I'd use very precise grammar and enunciation but speak in a death-metal (http://homestarrunner.com/sbemail141.html) tone.

02-22-06, 12:25 AM Well the reason im asking is because the Complete Arcane Baleful Utterance says "you speak a syllable of the dark speech (described in the Book of Vile Darkness)" and it cause the item to shatter ect ect. but i dont have a book of vile darkness handy to see what it says about it i was just under the impression that it had some words or writings of "dark speech" but thank you all for your help ill use that to make my char better :D

02-22-06, 12:42 AM Oh, no, the BoVD doesn't have a Dark Speech vocabulary. It simply describes the Dark Speech as the language of pure evil, more foul than that of demons and devils, so powerful and corrupt that speaking even a single word of it without proper training (a feat) or magic protection will kill the speaker outright, and even those that are trained take ability damage from speaking such a hateful tongue.

For something like that I'd put on my best psychotic expression and death-metal voice with the command "Burst" or something similar. That should achieve a nice dramatic effect.

Learn a little latin, roll your eyes into the back of your head and do your best Rammstein voice. (Deep, throaty, heavy metal voice.)

Just saying something like "fail", "break", "shatter" or any other synonym for one of those three in latin while doing a possessed act should be more than enough.

Anyway, yeah. You want a character to sound like they're getting ready to cast a spell in some hideously evil tongue, a little theatrics and some incomprehensible Latin spoken in the proper voice (particularly a growling, throaty, guttural tone, at least for a male character) can work wonders. And if you can do that eye-roll thing or any other vaguely creepy thing while you do, so much the better.

Infernal: This is the best language for comparitives. Indeed, if one needs to draw a line between two objects, concepts, or people, Infernal is the language to do it in. For example, the word "iox" (Eye-Ox) means, most literally, "better because I say so" or, more figuratively, "better only because of my feelings, and no physical quality." This is as close to an equivilant for "equal" as it gets in Infernal.

Curses: Infernal is rife with curses, most of which are simply put downs.
"Iami nii fulim" translates into "I will choose the smell of the unknown to yours." Or, more readily, "You smell funny, I'm leaving." This is one of those phrases which young wizards pick up at academies and which float around making a general nuissence of themselves.
"Orenne Fah." Means "without purpose" or "without master." For a Common equivelant, crossrefference "worthless bast(inet)."

Abysal: One does not generally expect the language of demons to be especially rich, but in fact there is one area at which the language excells. It is used quasi-commenly amoung craftsmen of all kinds for its ability to describe in what state of repair something is. There are over a thousand prefixes (Abysal has few "set" words, just prefexes and suffixes) to describe how broken or damaged something is.

Curses: Abysal is also a breeding ground for curses.
"Iuxalfinexmnen" Sublimated into the aether and exponged from memory. It is the greatest state of destruction something can have. When used as an insult, it means something to the tune of "kicked his/her/its/your ass."
"Tenrufex" Litterally, "demonsh(nikkies)." One of the few Abysal phrases commonly spoken by paladins."
