We're starting a new campaign where we are acting as government agents. In this we have to run two characters. One is a Dwarven Cleric and the other is a Human Rogue, who I see as a cat burglar type. Gets in, gets the objective, gets out, and isn't detected. She starts at 2nd level. I want to know if this is good. Rules are no PrC's, and nothing outside core unless it's approved by the DM. The only other book I have is Races of Destiny.

Name: Annika Hansen (lol, who gets the joke?)

STR 10
DEX 17
CON 12
INT 17
WIS 14
CHA 9

Balance +8
Decipher Script +8
Disable Device +10
Escape Artist +8
Hide +8
Move Silently +8
Open Lock +10
Search +8
Spot +7
Tumble +8

Feats: Weapon Finesse, Nimble Fingers

Not equipped yet, don't know if DM has specific rules towards this or not. Will find out tomorrow. Opinions please Ladies and Gents.

Well...

What...

Sure. if your looking for a character that is good as a rogue.

I guess if you are looking for a rogue that is like every other rogue.

dude,

if I were you, I'd take no ranks in escape artist and I'd put them all in listen and sleight of hand. You practically don't use escape artist, but you will use listen and soh.

cheers

Additionally, your build is quite risky: If you are not detected and not somehow brought into connection with your deeds, everything is fine. If not, you have neither the charisma nor the skill to bluff you out of the situation when someone asks you some questions...

Ok, I'll put more ranks into listen and sleight of hand next level. As for the charisma, i know it's low. I may be able to persuade the DM to let me switch the CHA and WIS scores. However, it's not too much of an issue since we had built our two squads (since we're running two parties, 7(8) players with 2 characters each). My rogue is working with another rogue and a bard IIRC so the CHA aspect isn't too bad, I'll just let someone else lie for me :P

You miight want to start putting some ranks into UMD. There are times in which some spell power can be useful. And by now, you probably don't need ranks in Balance.

I do see one problem, though, you have weapon finesse, which requires a +1 bab, which you do have at your level, but at the level you must have chosen it (level 1), you would not have fulfilled the prerequisites (unless you're allowed to 'save' feats).

Its quite an ordinary character, with specialisations in locks/traps and general combat. The skills are rather maxed out aren't they? You don't have to put 4 ranks in every skill, and with lesser used skills, you may be better off (most of the fun of rogues is being able to do 'everything'.

Sleight of hand wouldn't be that important for a cat burglar, but not putting ranks in listen is inviting trouble.

I hadn't noticed that. I was making the character all at once at Lvl 2 ,:S. Oh well, next level it is then, which should be at the end of the next session with a bit of luck. My bad. Ranks in listen it is then, and UMD. Any other skills worth grabbing?

Cat Burglar with a low Charisma will need Climb & Rope Use. Escape Artist will come in handy if caught or grappled, especially when you can't talk your way out of a tight spot. You'll also need balance for running roof tops and narrow ledges etc. Jump will also prove usefull. Check the synergy list in the Players Handbook to make sure you get your bonuses.

At 2nd level, Use Magic Device may or may not be useful. Will the DM be letting you get your hands on magic devices at such a low level?

There is a feat I read about somewhere that could be useful- and I don't recall it's name- rubbery bones or something. Basically let the character pass through openings that would normally be too small. Don't know if it'd be legal in your campaign, but if someone else knows where it is & what it's called, you could check it out.

Pick good equipment. You'll want things like special ropes, grappling hooks, oil cans. MW or magical lockpicks, ring of invisibilty, something like Boots of Elvenkind, armor or clothing with Shadow ability, something to grant you dark vision, flash pellets, Bullseye lantern with a continual light spell cast on it's inside. Disguised weapons, such as a whip for a belt, garrote as a necklace, throwing sap as a yo-yo, lock pick hidden in hair or disguised as a ear ring, a necklace with tubes that are little blow guns filled with ground cayenne pepper, sneezing powder, dust of appearing etc. (I know not all these items are appropriate for a 2nd level character, but the character won't stay 2nd level forever.) Use a quarter staff to help leap between buildings, as a balancing beam, prod suspect areas. Use a mirror on a stick to look around corners. Give your character a simple periscope. Keep a bag of pebbles with magic mouth cast on them and sling them to create distractions. Pebbles with continual light or darkness.

There are a number of things that will prove useful with a bit of creative thinking
