Zephia Scribewright is a freelance writer for major news outlets in the Multiverse (to include The Waterdeep Post, The Greyhawk Times, and Ebberon Today Magazine). She is conducting interviews among the adventuing types of these and other worlds. The Big Questions to which she is trying to get the Big Answers: How did you start your adventuring career? and/or Why did you start adventuring?

(I got this idea reading the 1001 reasons for adventuring thread. Pick a character (or two) and answer the questions above. Please do the interview IC to add to the flavor. Hopefully, it will give players and DMs background ideas for PCs or NPCs. I'll start off to give and idea on how to do this. Use the template below so we can see who is being interviewed. Have fun with it)

Name - Justanian Ari'ban
Race - Drow Elf
Class (Profession) - Rogue(5)/Ranger-Modified(5)/Duskblade(1) (Bounty Hunter)

I have tried to gain access to a more well-known Drow living on the surface. Luckily, I caught up with another. I sat down with Justanian at a quaint roadside inn just north of Loudwater. The locals did not seem to mind the drow's presence. I later found out he has helped the locals before and has a base of operation just north of here in the frontier villages of the Northern Delimbyr River Valley. He is dressed in wood elf kilt and tartans of a small clan east of the Anarouch with a black leather, wide-brim hat, rustic shirt, and swords at easy access on his belt. (My ring of Magic Detection shows him aglow with various magic items to include his weapons) He removes his hat in curtosy to me to show the silvery lox that are cropped short. His skin shines with an ebony glow while his scarlet eyes pierce the soul.

Zephia Scribewright (ZS): Thank you for meeting me.

Justanian Ari'ban (JA): nods

ZS: Many of my readers are fascinated by the dark, evil drow coming to the surface. We heard of the troubles in the Dalelands with the drow. Obviously, you are not one of these. So, what did bring you to the surface?

JA: I was on a raid and had what I believe you call an attack of conscience.

ZS: Really. I heard it was the face of an elf-maiden.

JA: Cold, piercing stare. (ZS Note: Must be a touchy subject.)

ZS: Your first name is not elven, but dwarven. Why would you taken on a dwarf name?

JA: My given name (Jusilith) meant venegence. Out of respect to a mentor I chose Justanian in his honor.

ZS: 'Justice Bringer'. Nice pick, especially since you have taken up hunting fugitives to have them brought to justice. Ironic, in that you can be considered a fugitive yourself.

JA: Fugitive implies I am running. I don't run. My blood kin know where I am. It's the cost of returning me to the Underdark has become heavier than the reward. So, they have stopped the pursuit, for now.

ZS: We have a sense of how you became an adventurer. But, why do you continue to wanderlust life style? Any chance of settling down in one place?

JA: I have few friends and many enemies. Between the hunting and being hunted, it leaves little time for stability.

ZS: So, no romance in the air?

JA: Stares off into the distance of the mind as if to ignore the question. (ZS Notes: a story here. Must pursue a lead) No.

ZS: The danger of hunting criminals must have an excitement to it. What is it like?

JA: Intoxicating. Some have drink and herb to exilarate them. I hunt the most dangerous thing in the world. A person running from justice. The smart ones let their fear of capture sharpen their senses. Those are the most invigorating hunts.

ZS: (You could feel the passion come from him as his eyes seemed to glow. It gave me chills.) Well, I most go. Thank you for your time.

JA: nods

Name: Simon Cruel
Race: Human
Profession: Ladies’ Man

(Simon sits cross-legged and leaning back casually in his chair. He exudes a certain confidence. He is casual to the point of being vulgar, but somehow he still seems courteous and personable. His relaxed attitude has a relaxing effect on those around him. On anyone else, his clothing would appear to have been selected by someone suffering from colorblindness, but you can tell by looking at him, that when he paired puce leggings with a mustard-yellow tunic, he knew exactly what he was doing. His charm is overwhelming and is largely due to his natural magnetism, but it is equally obvious that that has been augmented with some magical effect.)

Adventurers Quarterly: So, how long have you been adventuring?
Simon: Life’s an aventure. (He leans in and grins.) ‘ow long have you been covering up those gams with such long skirts? You should show a little leg, turn all the boys’ ‘eads you would.

AQ: Mr. Cruel, I think we…
SC: Simon, no misters ‘ere, Luv. I’ve been aventur’n as you call it lo ‘bout seven, nine years. ‘ard to say, really the zact dates. Sort one of those, how you say? Transitional things. When did just living and goin’ ‘bout daily life all ofa sudden b’come a aventurer’s life? ‘ard t’ say init?

AQ: Well, how did it happen? What was your first real “adventure” you recall participating in?
SC: Oh, see now tha’s a good story that one. Now see, you ‘ave to understand Simon to know ‘ow Simon became this ‘ere Simon you see t’day.

Worlds full o’ schlubs init? Get up w’ th’ sun, gon’ t’ work. Come on in after she’s bedded down and do the whole thing ‘gain next day don’ they? Well, see, I weren’t made fer that sorta life. I was blessed with a more…sensitive nature. (The grin returns. He takes a sip of wine from the crystal goblet on the sideboard next to him.)

AQ: Then how do you support yourself?
SC: I’m gittin’ there, Luv. Feisty one this. (wink) I was sayin’, I’m not the sort t’ live like that, nothin’ in the worl’ ‘gainst thems 'at do. Each ‘is own as I says. I’ve found though tha’ if I’m friendly to folks, then folks jus’ like to be friendly right back.

AQ: How do you mean?
SC: Well see, you go out with yer mates, yer girl friends, you like to have yerselves a right good time, right? Well tha’s where ol’ Simon comes in init? Don’ matter if it was the best time o’yer life or the worst, it woulda bin better ‘ad ol’ Simon been there. An ifn you ‘ad a guy like me ’round, well, y’d be grateful wouln’cha? An tha’s really all there is to ol’ Simon in’t there.

AQ: So, you are some kind of…party boy?
SC: Now, that was a bit on the tactless side of things wasn’t it, Love? (The transformation is a little disarming. All traces of the accent are gone when his voice grows hard and a little cold.)

AQ: I didn’t mean to…
SC: No ‘arm then, luv, no ‘arm.

AQ: So your first real adventure…?
SC: Yeah see, there’s this fellow, I don’ wanna give the name’s an’ git in anyun’s business see, but this fellah ‘e ‘as a knack for puttin’ people together. An’ ‘e comes to me askin’ ‘bout this house, this guy. See, another frein’ a ‘is wanted to git inta that ‘ouse right quick but couldn’t find a way. So I says, “Oi, why is this fellah tryin’ t’ sneak in when ‘e could just walk through the front door? And this friend of mine ‘e gets real curious and asks ‘ow the little fellah goin’ to do that. So I says, I says, “The bastard w’ th’ big ‘ouse is havin’ a party. ‘e can just walk in like. An’ my friend ‘e says ‘is friend ain’t invited and ‘e asks me if I’m invited, and I know right there ‘e’s playin’ me for a favor ‘cause even when Simon ain’t on a list ‘e’s still on the list if you see an’ my friend ‘e knows this well as anyb’dy.
So, I says to my friend I says, “I’ll git yer little friend…” Little friend was a tallfellow ya know, ‘s why I keep callin’ ‘im the little friend, I says, “I’ll git yer little friend in there but I don’ wan’ no real trouble now see? I gota rep’tation t’ up’old here.” An’ ‘e says there’s no trouble gonna ‘appen if I get ‘is little friend in the front ‘e will do ever’thing else an’ I says, “Well I don’ know if I can…” and right there my friend knows I gone to playin’ ‘im ‘cause a course I can but I ‘ave needs an'wants too, see, an’ ifn there’s some sorta risk and rumeration, then I want a bit a them rumerations, so t’ speak.

AQ: And how did it turn out?
SC: Well see I can’ rightly say seeins ‘ow them things tha’ work out best are them things tha’ no body knows ‘appen’d a’tall, see. Why don’t me an' you take a lil break?
