| Shadowsouled12-12-03, 09:49 PM | Seriously, I'm in the process of making a ranger. I want him to dual wield and one of his weapons to be a scimitar but I don't want to deal with the "Drizzt Clone" stigma. He wouldn't be using two scimitars. Just one with a light weapon in his off hand. He wouldn't be a drow, let alone a good drow. I realize it may be foolish but people get all crazy with the Anti-Drizzt stuff, I feel like taking the Scimitar as a weapon when you're a ranger is almost too trendy now. Has anyone else had similar thoughts....or am I crazy? |
| Aranael12-12-03, 10:03 PM | Yeah, I had te same problem, especially when looking at the Dervish PrC, which essentially Requires dual wielding scimitars. Then I realized- who cares what others think? So people accuse Everyone of being like Drizzt. So be it. The question you have to ask yourself is this- Are you making them to be like Drizzt? Or are you making them because it's a cool character concept (one of the reasons Drizzt exists...)? If you don't do it, or even don't dual wield scimitars, just because you are scared of being a Drizzt clone, that is just as bad as Being a Drizzt clone, in my eyes. Do what You want to do, and the world be damned. In my mind, I had a thousand characters who dual wield swords before I ever heard of Drizzt Do'Urden. I will not abandon that as my favored fighting style just because it has become popular, or I may be seen as copying someone. Neither should you. Don't give in to peer pressure Any more readily than you give in to the latest "fads". Just my opinion. |
| zodiki12-12-03, 11:04 PM | Another one is the wizard with a pointy hat and wooden staff. There's also the half-naked barbarian with greatsword. |

I feel like taking the Scimitar as a weapon when you're a ranger is almost too trendy now. Dude! Is there a drow ranger armed with two scimitars in your party? Has anyone in your group played a character armed as such? If they haven't then there is no trend and no refurbished character concept. There is nothing to say that a thousand rangers should be similar in any way to the character created by R.A. Salvatore. The scimitar is a great weapon for it's critical threat range, but then again so is the kukri (hint, hint, nudge, nudge) ;) |
| Mr_Special12-13-03, 01:39 AM | i never knew about drizzt untill i ran into drizzt retards in Balder's gate... all the time, when i wanted to start a new game from the start and have nobody cheat... someone would come in, load some psycho-ass character with insane stats and crazy weapons, at uber high levels... Me - *Removes character from party* Drizzt - "Hey what are you doing?" Me - "New characters only! no cheats!" Drizzt - "Its not a cheat character, its a Drizzt character, i dowloaded him!"   Using two scimitars is a cool and effective fighting style - as long as you don't try to be a Drizzt loser, its all good :) |
| mercurial6712-13-03, 01:55 AM | Hmmm.... I have a concept for a ranger planned. He will fight with two weapons, one of which will be a scimitar. Am I worried people will think he's a drizzt clone? Nope, I hadn't even considered the idea. His other weapon will be a sickle (to trip with - it's a light weapon) and he's a half orc to boot. If it's not a dritz clone, then don't worry about it. If it is a drizzt clone, well I pitty you.... ;) |
| DemonMonkeyBoy12-13-03, 02:01 AM | :b:The very first character a ever made was a dual scimitar weilding ranger. The guys showing me how to make a character laughed and said "Great another drizzt". I was very confused at the time, because I had no idea what there were talking about. I thought it was just a cool set up. Short story shorter just have fun. Don't concern your self with the limted thoughts of others, because is if a combat style is affective other people are going to adopt it. |

| q'afuu12-13-03, 09:09 AM | Originally posted by Shadowsouled He wouldn't be using two scimitars. Just one with a light weapon in his off hand. He wouldn't be a drow, let alone a good drow. In short, all he has in common with Drizzt is that he's a ranger. I don't see the problem. The dual scimitars are not his defining characteristic anyway. That'd be the eternal soulsearching and moralizing. ;) I'm pretty sure there's more to your character than his class levels and equipment anyway. Even if you do make a ranger who dual-wields scimitars, there's no reason why he/she would have to be anything like Drizzt. I've made dozens of rangers, several of which used one or more scimitars. It's a very appropriate weapon for desert or tundra rangers, nothing more or less than that. Rangers get dual-wielding as a class ability (in 3.5, as a possible class ability). If you count the number of melee weapons that can be dual-wielded (especially if you leave out the exotic ones) and that are a decent choice for a ranger, you'll see you don't have all that many options. Not taking one of those specifically because someone else thinks it's derivative is simply dumb. |
| Edymnion12-13-03, 02:20 PM | Nah, a Ranger with a scimitar is no more a Drizzt clone than a Barbarian with a Bastard Sword is a He-Man/Conan clone. As long as you aren't weilding two scimitars, and you aren't a good aligned drow with more angst than a teenager, you're perfectly fine. Its just when you start playing a drow ranger dual weilding scimitars that just happens to find exactly what he needs in any treasure pile, then you'll have to worry about being a Drizzt clone (yeah, somebody tell me the odds of finding a matching pair of magical scimitars in a medieval european treasure horde...) |
| BenjCano12-13-03, 05:47 PM | Originally posted by Edymnion As long as you aren't weilding two scimitars, and you aren't a good aligned drow with more angst than a teenager, you're perfectly fine. Well to be perfectly honest and fair, Drizzt IS a teenager, comparatively speaking, based on his age (60-80 years) within the context of his expected lifespan (350 years). |
| Eldren12-14-03, 03:33 PM | While there were a lot of people who suddenly made Chaotic Good drow Rangers who dual-wielded scimitars (and they tried their damndest to get their hands on a Figurine of Wondrous Power - Onyx Panther while they were at it) in the wake of R.A. Salvatore's popular books, the ultimate reason why they tried this was because drow were a powerful race to play that gave them powers the normal PC races in 2nd Edition just didn't have. Back in 2nd Edition, they didn't have the concept of "ECL Adjustment", so if the Dungeon Master let someone play a drow, and everyone else was playing races from the Player's Handbook, then the drow character was simply more powerful, and the other players had to deal with it, or ask the DM to let them play a variant race that was equally as powerful so they weren't constantly outclassed by a super character. Driz'zt is a cool character not because he's a good-aligned drow Ranger, but because he was well-written, with a lot of depth and backstory that made the readers care about him. Many people get into Dungeons & Dragons after having read a fantasy novel and really identifying with or liking one of the characters. In the 18 years I've played Dungeons & Dragons, I've seen Wizards who were the spitting image of either Gandalf or Ged (from Ursula K. LeGuin's "Earthsea" series), I've seen Fighters that are a lot like either Conan or Tiger (from Jennifer Roberson's "Tiger & Del" novels), I've seen Rogues who were a lot like Gord the Rogue (from Gary Gygax's "Gord the Rogue" books back around the time of 1st Edition), and I've seen Clerics who are a lot like Cadderly Bonaduce (from R. A. Salvatore's "Cleric Quintet" series for the Forgotten Realms; it was the first time the Power Deneir was "cool" to worship!). Heck, even female Monks now in 3rd Edition seem to often be patterned after Danica (from the same series as Cadderly). People really like these characters. Players need a point of reference as well if they're new to the hobby, which means many newer players who choose to be a halfling are going to bear remarkable similarities to Frodo, Samwise, Merry or Pippin. Why? Because hobbits are a popular and easy reference for the players of halflings to make. Likewise with Gandalf for Wizards, or Driz'zt Do'Urden for good-aligned drow Rangers. Don't worry too much about the stigma. If you're in the Forgotten Realms, find ways to make your scimitar-wielding Ranger not be like Driz'zt. Don't worship Mielikki. Don't whine to the Dungeon Master until he acquiesces and gives you a Figurine of Wondrous Power. If you get two scimitars, try to make sure one isn't a Frostbrand and the other isn't a Defender. Don't ask the Wizard in the party to always encase your foes in a globe of Darkness. Just being a Ranger means that you're either going to dual-wield or be a master with the bow, and if you choose the scimitar because you think it's a cool weapon, then automatically some parallels are going to be drawn between you and Driz'zt. The ultimate decision on whether you're a Driz'zt clone, though, is in how you play the character. Also keep in mind that Driz'zt now has 3rd Edition stats, in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Sourcebook. The majority of his friends from the Companions of Mithril Hall also have stats (I think Bruenor's might be in the primary FR book as well, and I know Wulfgar's are in the FR accessory "The Silver Marches"). In 3rd Edition, Driz'zt has a couple levels of Barbarian, to simulate the time he spent as The Hunter while wandering the Underdark, after he'd left Menzoberranzan but before he'd reached the surface for the first time. So don't take a couple levels of Barbarian. There are ways to be a scimitar-wielding Ranger without being accused of being a Driz'zt clone. If someone in your group accuses you of this, point out that the only similarities between your character and Driz'zt are that you're a Ranger and use a scimitar. Everything else is likely entirely different. |
| Lord Darkblade12-14-03, 03:48 PM | Scimitars are cool, Drizzt is dead, or at least in my FR campaign... Some 3rd level thief met Drizzt, then used the call Drizzt cheat (he is on your side then) to kill Drizzt... end result was a dead Drizzt and I got his cool stuff! (ok it did take 20 Drizzts to mug Drizzt but still...) |
| Dizmoo12-23-03, 02:28 PM | Why not just use a rapier or 2? Only 5gp more and you get weapon finesse with them. |
| eudas12-23-03, 03:20 PM | i prefer the druid with scimitar & small shield. but, if you insist on ranger, why not go the same route? scimitar, and a small spiked shield, with the Improved Shield Bash feat, et voila. your TWF helps you out alot, but you can smack people around with a unique combination. eudas |
| Rian Lightblade12-23-03, 04:51 PM | Originally posted by Dizmoo Why not just use a rapier or 2? Only 5gp more and you get weapon finesse with them. Ahh I was going to suggest that. Yeah Rapiers are a great choice for the reasons mentioned above and the fact it does the same damage and has the same critical as a scimitar. |
| eudas12-23-03, 04:54 PM | Originally posted by Rian Lightblade Ahh I was going to suggest that. Personally I'd rather slice 'im in half than poke 'im full of holes. eudas |
| Salla12-23-03, 08:11 PM | My response if anybody accuses me of making a Drizzt clone ... (and this is a serious response ...) "Who?" |
| William Coburn12-23-03, 08:57 PM | A rather simply way to look nothing like Drrizit is instead of using the silly little elven scimitars, use the big iron(cold?) aribic ones. I much prefere the shape of those, just screams "Nasty!" |
| WINTERINSUMMER12-24-03, 12:04 AM | scimitars, no, mercurial great swords/fullblades YES plus my ranger uses two ninja-tos, and he is an assasin multi-class (i was able to pull off a CN) so my advice is only use swords that you can use in tandem |
| SnowbearK12-24-03, 01:05 AM | Ever since I saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (why Sean, why in god's name...????) I really liked the rapier-wielding character of Dorian Gray. The scene where he is first introduced and then goes about summarily executing his attackers with a rapier (sword-cane, but essentially the same) is all I needed for inspiration. Btw, rapiers are only primarily piercing weapons. The do have two edges as well. Utilizing two rapiers would take a greater level of skill than utilizing two slashing weapons, as the techniques are a great deal more complex. Man using two scimitars = whoa...stand back and see if he knows how to use them. Man using two rapiers = holy crap, either he's insane or that good... |
| The White Sorcerer12-24-03, 01:32 AM | I'm playing a scimitar-wielding ranger right now! Then again, he only has one scimitar since he's an archer ranger. |
| thalious12-24-03, 01:53 AM | To hades with other peoples opinions--opinions are like :censored:, everyone has one.. If you want to have everyone of your characters dual weild scimitars, go for it. |
| Wulfgar12-24-03, 02:56 AM | Naw, not at all; I have a current PC ranger (human) who uses a scimitar; he either goes scimitar & shield, scimitar & kukri, scimitar & handaxe or scimitar & dagger when he fights, depending on his opponent and his mood. I'm tempted to go the double katar route with him as well. That would look pretty cool. |
| Shadow of the Masked Lord12-24-03, 02:13 PM | Firstly it's rather stupid to accuse someone of being a Drizzt clone if the only similarities are the scimitar and ranger thing. (but a lot of people are stupid. I've been charged with 'Drizzt-Cloning' and my character is the Vhaeraun priest from Hell. ^-^) Secondly Drizzt is almost impossible to clone unless your DM is a complete retard and writes in a magical panthar statue or w/e. :d: muahz* |
| elfnecro12-24-03, 02:23 PM | I love playing scimitar wielding anything, sometimes I even dual-wield scimitars. I have only read on Drizzt book (the third one of the dark elf trilogy.) There is a special reason for my affinity for scimitars, a +1 dancing scimitar was my first ever magical item. |
| Xandar Dae'Ithil12-24-03, 04:15 PM | Who cares what others think ;) It's your character...tell other people to mind their own characters :) Do/make whatever you want :) (er...to the extent that your DM will let you :P ) |
| Slivvy Gaidin12-25-03, 06:37 AM | The actual statement saying that a "double scimitar wielding drow is a Drizzt clone" is actually incorrect. Two weapon fighting was a common fighting style among the drow in the books of the Dark Elf Trilogy. Drizzt was hardly the first Drow to use two scimitars, so I see no reason why he should be the last. And, as others have said above, even if the personality of your CG twin wielding drow matched that of Drizzt, your character is no worse that the typical Conan the Bbn-ish greatsword wielding character played by almost all at one point or another. |
| Darth K'Trava12-25-03, 08:18 PM | I haven't thought about it. And may not unless the party finds a scimitar lying about after a battle and my ranger picks it up. And adds it to his repertoire of weapons (he's a virtual "weapons rack" of weapons). He has two primary swords he uses for battle (both magical) and a backup mace, handaxe and dagger. Also a longbow for ranged combat. |
| Megatron12-27-03, 10:33 PM | Nothing wrong with a scimitar-wielding ranger, I play one myself. If you have fun playing him, it was a good choice.:) |
| thalious12-27-03, 10:56 PM | Maybe people like playing dual scimitar weilding drow just to annoy easily peeved board members. |
| Koga:The ninja trick12-28-03, 04:34 PM | Yep, do whatever feels right dude. The Koga wouldn't pick on you for looking like Drizzit anyway.. :D Though I would make snide remarks about how you wield a sissy smchitar.. :smirk: *Koga*'Oh lookit' me! I'm the girly elven man with the teeny tiny sword who will "dual wield" his way to victory!' Pthfffft! Muskateers are best served as candy yo! *Gets stabbed in the forehead and cleric has to heal him.* |
| Walker Blackheart12-28-03, 05:26 PM | i made a drizzt clone once, only he was as dumb as a post and stopped in the middle of a fight, using his scimitars to pick his nose. |
