| Fair_Player08-26-06, 05:09 AM | my dm doesn't allow me to buy tomes cause he says that they are artifacts, and that they are very rare... so i woundered if this is just my dm or is it really a artifact?? |
| guesswhat1232108-26-06, 05:24 AM | no there not artifacts but there just really expensive because they take A LOT of XP to make. But they are very powerful and your DM can very well make them artifacts if he wants. Edit: Well minor artifacts at least. Maybe Major If he wants to be really scrict on how many "free" ability points you can get that way you can break the char too much. |
| Fireclave08-26-06, 05:50 AM | Mechanically, tomes are not artifacts, but they might as well should be since they are so rare. Very, very, few spellcasters get to the level where they could cast Wish or Miracle, and fewer of them would probably consider taking the extra time, XP, and gold to write a tomb unless they had a very good reason to (or unless they are really bored :P ). It's much easier and faster for them to cast the appropriate spells on themselves or their allies instead. However, if you are willing to go track down these very busy, very important, 17th+ level spellcasters, knock on their front doors, request that they spend 1000's of their own hard earned XP along with hundreds and hundreds of man-hours to craft the tomb for you, and and willing to pay up front (plus service charges, king's tax, mage's tax, and whatever else they feel like charging you), and can convince them to not disintergrate you for taking up their valuable time, then hey, go for it  |
| Bob Loblaw08-26-06, 11:51 AM | According to the DMG, they are not artifacts. However, in his world, they might be. I know I have taken "standard" items and given them artifact status in my games in the past. |
| archerpwr08-26-06, 02:18 PM | Check how much the listed price for tomes is. by the lvl you can afford one unless you already have all 6 of the +6 to given ability score items equiped you are far better off buying the much cheaper and slightly more effective cloak or whatnot. if you are that high of a lvl that you can afford one at the listed price then barge in on a lvl 17 wizard (who hopefully wont disentigrate you) hold up a big old sack of platinum pieces and say "I really need you to make and sell me a tome" |
| Archangel6208-26-06, 02:51 PM | Generally I state that they cannot be bought, I do the same with the ring of 3 wishes, you can find them in certain treasure hordes and some ancient orders may give them as a reward for a particularly grueling task, but that's about it. |
| Bulletproof_Condom08-26-06, 03:29 PM | I really don't see what the problem is. It's such a huge amount of gold for such a small boost. So what if it's inherent. If you feel they're too cheap, just multiply the price by 1.5, 2, 3, whatever. But it's a little childish to be like "You can't have them, they're artifacts." |
| Molitor08-26-06, 05:06 PM | Well, if your DM says they are artifacts then they are. It's that simple, what a DM says is law. Technically you are metagaming if you ask if they are for sale. Does your character know they exist? If he does then forget this point, but if he doesn't then-yeah-that's metagaming. |
| HyperVyperBeam08-27-06, 03:48 AM | If you want a tome, find out who has one and go quest for it. The DM doesn't have to make every single item so readily available, especially those items which are so costly and rare. At least he made it clear that they existed rather than removing them from the game altogether. For the longest time my players couldn't get their hands on any +1 longswords. The characters found out that it was because of the huge fire which wiped out the +1 longsword factory when they found a halfling using the old door sign as a sled. What do they think, these things grow on trees? Or maybe I'm just mean. |
