| symons01-20-05, 12:49 AM | My 12th level wizard engaged a small group of goblins. One of them popped up during combat and used two hand crossbows on me. He got a hit with one which had drow sleep poison on it. I missed the first save and went unconscious, then made my second save 1 minute later. He claims this was enough time for the goblin to cross the 30 ft, get a rope from his pack, take my sword, my circlet, and my gloves off, and tie me up but not gag me. Seems like he got an awful lot done in a short time to me. |
| Thorak01-20-05, 01:02 AM | Move 30 feet to you; two Move actions, end of round 1. Get an item (rope) from his pack, move action in round 2. Take your sword; Disarm which you can't resist, Standard action, finishing round 2. Taking your circlet, Disarm again. Round 3. Each glove, a Disarm each. Rounds 4 and 5. That still leaves 30 seconds. But binding a character takes 1 minute. So yes, the Goblin's actions should have taken a minute and a half. If he had a friend doing some of it, no problem at all, though. |

If he had a friend doing some of it, no problem at all, though. Well, it would be bit evil, but the DM could rule that the character was hastly bound and therefore allow it in 30 seconds. Of course, we can only hope that he would also reduce the escape artist check if this was the case. A full minute, even in D&D, is a long time to do stuff. |
| anders01-20-05, 04:16 AM | you DM would be evil if he did a cup de grace on you.. ;) |
| PhaedrusXY01-20-05, 04:23 AM | you DM would be evil if he did a cup de grace on you.. ;)No kidding. Just be glad they were "nice" goblins. |
| Phrennzy01-20-05, 10:06 AM | Is my DM right, or just evil? Can't he be both? While the goblin might not be able to tie you up and steal your stuff in under a minute, he certainly could have coup-de-grace'd you. And then of course, he could have had help - you wouldn't know, being unconcious. And of course, you should have no trouble getting your stuff back - being 12th level and all against goblins. |
| Draco Strang01-20-05, 10:25 AM | And of course, you should have no trouble getting your stuff back - being 12th level and all against goblins. I can imagine it now: *Angry, naked wizard busts down the door to the goblin hovel holding a shovel (-4 to attack)* "Ok guys, this is SO not funny." |
| Vintar01-20-05, 11:13 AM | Now however - we must address the question of whether the DM is evil. Isn't saying someone is a DM the same thing as saying they are evil? :evillaugh |
| MrkGrismer01-20-05, 11:47 AM | I believe the entry in the Fiend Folio states: Alignment: Always evil But I have to go from memory on this, as it is not Open Game Content, and thus not in the SRD. |
| Ze_Mighty_Vegetable01-20-05, 04:34 PM | He's not evil. He's the DM. You seems to forget that bad things CAN happen in a game. Think about movies for a second. Ever seen any film where the heroes were first captured/stolen all possessions/poisonned at some point in the story? Remember how this led to tense motents of suspense as they overcame the odds and triumphed? |
| trapspringer01-20-05, 05:28 PM | I get it! The director was evil, too! |
| Ze_Mighty_Vegetable01-20-05, 05:34 PM | I get it! The director was evil, too! Sigh. Yes. you got it ::readying my gun:: |
| the dmg01-20-05, 06:51 PM | And of course, you should have no trouble getting your stuff back - being 12th level and all against goblins. This is true, you should just ready your team together and get your stuff back. |
| symons01-20-05, 10:24 PM | I was kidding about the evil part. I know he just wanted to drag my sleeping ass to the sorcerer king bound and helpless to make things interesting for me. I just wanted to try out my new 'whining' feat. It worked! We ruled he only had enough time to bind me and he was just getting around to gagging me when I awoke, used Teleport (Verbal only so the binding didn't stop me) to escape to safety. I had no team with me that night. We were bored so we played without the rest of the crew and I thought I could handle the reconnaissance without getting into trouble. Next time I'll recruit an NPC first to watch my back. |
| clarkvalentine01-20-05, 10:45 PM | Rule Zero of our gaming group: Thou Shalt Trust thy GM. If it's a stretch, it isn't that big a stretch. I say just go with it. See where it leads. Escapes can make for great games. |
| pres_man01-20-05, 10:53 PM | Move 30 feet to you; two Move actions, end of round 1. Get an item (rope) from his pack, move action in round 2. Goblins have a move of 30 ft, so he can make it in 1 move. Also if he had at least a +1 attack (seeing how he was shooting a 12th level character, I'm pretty sure he did), he could "draw" the rope while he was moving. Now I know what your thinking, rope is not a weapon, and right. It's an improvised weapon. :D Take your sword; Disarm which you can't resist, Standard action, finishing round 2. Taking your circlet, Disarm again. Round 3. Each glove, a Disarm each. Rounds 4 and 5. That still leaves 30 seconds. Disarm? He's not resisting, its more like picking up an item or retrieving an item which are move equivalent. But binding a character takes 1 minute. So yes, the Goblin's actions should have taken a minute and a half. If he had a friend doing some of it, no problem at all, though. Assuming there was only one goblin involved. One goblin could be tying him up while the rest are looting his body. Also if they were smart, they'ed be beating the crude out of him (non-lethal damage) the whole time as well. So he even though he made his save, he still might be unconsious for awhile. |
| danielinthewolvesden01-20-05, 10:59 PM | Where was the rest of your party? Your familiar? |
| Zom01-20-05, 11:01 PM | You got off easy. I would have had you coup-de-grace'd. You would likely have done the same to the goblin if the situation were reversed. |
| clarkvalentine01-20-05, 11:08 PM | You got off easy. I would have had you coup-de-grace'd. And pass up such a golden story opportunity? Get creative! ;) Escape plots are so much more interesting than "OK, roll up a new character." |
| symons01-20-05, 11:25 PM | I realize he could have killed me while I was out. If the DM wants to kill you, you'll die. He decided on the lenient course because I was on my own. I was on my own because none of our buddies could make it that night. My character made the kind've artificial, risky choice of going out solo on this adventure because we wanted to play. I thought a little DM lenience was to be expected. Personally I think he shouldn't have had the goblins spot me from 500 feet away in the dark woods in the first place. I guess they got a great roll. Then I think giving the goblins drow sleep poison, then boosting the save to 15 instead of 13 ( I rolled a 14) was a bit telling... He's mentioned several times that he thinks my character is too powerful, so the whole situation began to feel artificially engineered to take all my gear (my magic books were in my pack too! Nothing sorrier than a spell-less wizard.) and cut me back down to size. That's fine, I guess, but misfortunes should feel like part of a story, not like the hand of the DM messing with you. |
| Thorak01-20-05, 11:34 PM | Goblins have a move of 30 ft, so he can make it in 1 move. Also if he had at least a +1 attack (seeing how he was shooting a 12th level character, I'm pretty sure he did), he could "draw" the rope while he was moving. Now I know what your thinking, rope is not a weapon, and right. It's an improvised weapon. :D Granted. I was assuming the worst, with the rope, and I hadn't bothered to look up a goblin's movement rate, which was my bad. Disarm? He's not resisting, its more like picking up an item or retrieving an item which are move equivalent. I used Disarm because it's more equivalent to the Grabbing an Item bit than just picking something up; it's a bit more involved to pull off someone's glove than to pick up a rock on the ground. He couldn't oppose the Disarm, though, of course. Assuming there was only one goblin involved. One goblin could be tying him up while the rest are looting his body. Also if they were smart, they'ed be beating the crude out of him (non-lethal damage) the whole time as well. So he even though he made his save, he still might be unconsious for awhile. Note the "and if he had a friend" bit in the part of my post you quoted. I considered this. |
| symons01-21-05, 09:57 AM | I am the Dm here My player (I said it ways ok for him to use my sign in). The spot roll was a natural 20. His hide was a 2. So it goes. As to the 15 DC drow sleep posion, Well some times things are different from the books, and I stated the DC before he rolled. As to taking all his stuff, not even close. I had the goblin that the Headband of INT(and Item Familiar), gloves of Dex, and long Swords, I ruled that the goblin did not have time to take the backpack(with the spell books and other good stuff) his Medimagic rods, or any of his potions. I even left him with his rings. I did not what to cut him down to size I wanted to set up the next adventure for the group. It is my fault if he feels like I am OUT TO GET him, and something I will work on. My goal is for every one to have fun. I am truely not messing with him. As for him being to powerful, No not really. All 12th level wizarads are powerful, not just him. As to the goblins having sleep posion, your whinning feat(which was Free :D ) will not work more for this enconter. ( I put wax in my ears :D ) As to being cut down to size, not needed, but it would have been part of the story if you had gone with it. An way I look forward, to see Matmos Fry all those sorry goblins and go after the goblin king, who family have been sorc. for three generations. |
