| Zaku05-30-06, 10:56 AM | Me and my friends are about to start playing with a new DM. I made a new character, a lvl 4 rouge/lvl 3 fighter/lvl 3 duelist elf. I'm not so sure about it though. Some advice would be nice... |
| Salty_Boy05-30-06, 12:21 PM | If you want my advice (and you don't), switch it around to 3 levels of Rogue and 4 levels of Fighter. That way you gain another fighter feat without losing any Sneak Attack dice and you can still easily meet the requirements for Duelist. Your saves are about the same, and even though you lose Uncanny Dodge you're not likely to find yourself flat-footed considering the initiative bonuses of a Duelist and the Dexterity bonuses of an Elf. You might also consider making the character a Grey Elf to get the racial Intelligence bonus. |
| LouSapphire05-30-06, 12:38 PM | Fighter 4/Rogue 3 is usually the better option. Fighter 4 gets you a bonus feat and access to weapon spec. Duellist 3 is a solid choice, you gain Weapon Finesse for free (a feat most rogues take), good skills, bonus to Ref AND +Int to weapon damage rolls. It synchs greatly with Rogue. Rogue 3 gives you +2d6 Sneak Attack and Evasion. Add in the skills etc and it's 3 lvl's well spent. You'll find it's one of the best 3 lvls you'll take in terms of what you get per lvl. Fighter 3 Gets you 2 feats, better Fort, d10's HD and nothing else. for an extra lvl however you get what I mentioned at the top, compare that to taking the 4th lvl of Rogue. BaB = Same HP = More from Fighter on average Saves - More fort (you'll find as a Rogue you get targetted with a lot of FOrt/Will saves, and you ref will be high eough considering your dex) Feats - 1 More than you would with Rogue Special Stuff - Uncanny Dodge v Weapon Spec. There are numerous ways of getting Uncanny Dodge, there are maybe 3 ways to get weapon spec feat. Skills - Fighter skills suck :( Shame. At the end of the day go with what you prefer though. If you want more rogue lvls (if you take 4 in rogue get a 5th for more sneak attack, generally ending rogue on an even lvl isn't a great idea), if you want more fighter lvls find a PrC instead :P Regardless, as long as you enjoy your char you have made the right decisions :) |

It synchs greatly with Rogue. You make a much more convincing and cohesive argument than I do, but here it seems that you have confused Duelist with Swashbuckler. Or maybe I did. Regardless, they both synch well with Rogue so it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. |

On reading the original post I did indeed misread Duellist as Swashbuckler. For reference Swashbuckler is a variant core class in Complete Warrior. I'm gonna wait till I get home to comment fully on the Duellist, as I need to reread the PrC. Personally from what I remember I'm not a fan, it limits you to using 1 single 1handed weapon, no shield, no off hand toys and severly limits the armour available to you. But as I said, I'll have a look at it again. Doubt my opinion will change though :( |
| hmmmm05-30-06, 01:10 PM | I don't think that it will, although if you want to be a dulest I think that you would have though about only using one weapon and no shield. |
| Salty_Boy05-30-06, 01:38 PM | For your perusing pleasure: The Duelist (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/duelist.htm) I second the notion that Swashbuckler is a better choice than Duelist, but if you prefer defense to offense (or maybe you don't have access to CW), they both have the same sort of idea behind them and have abilities complementary to both rogues and high-Dex fighter types. |
| hmmmm05-30-06, 03:06 PM | Unless you don't have the book for Swashbuckler. |
