Is this a spring attack situation? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-16-04, 12:19 AM Ok, my character is hasted. He intended to move up 15 feet and use his free hasted attack to attack, then move 25 feet and attack again (he has a base movement of 40, up to 70 with haste) and attack again. Effectively, he's taking a move equivalent, attacking once, and using the free haste attack.

My DM says I can only do that if I have spring attack. But I think, since the haste attack doesn't say when I have to take it, that according to the rules, I should have been able to attack with haste, move, and attack again. What say you all?

05-16-04, 12:59 AM In 3.5, this is not allowed. 3.5 Haste gives extra movement speed and an additional attack at maximum bonus when performing a full attack. As such, it doesn't provide any assistance if you only use a Standard attack action.

3.0 I'm not as sure about, but I think your DM is correct. Normally you'd get two actions: move (move-equivalent) and attack (standard). If I understand rightly, the extra "partial action" granted by haste allows an additional attack action. Thus, three actions: move (move-equivalent), attack (standard), and attack (partial). As described, you are using four actions: two attacks, two moves.

Your DM understands the rules correctly: the only way for two moves and an attack to count as only a standard action and a move action is to use Spring Attack (or a similar feat).

05-16-04, 12:22 PM Ahh, guess we've been playing it wrong. Didn't know that you had to do a full attack action to get the free attack. We've been playing it like it's the 3.0 partial action but it has to be an attack. Thanks for the reply.
