| The_Basilisk03-02-07, 07:14 PM | If a character has the smite good/evil ability (either from paladin, blackguard, half-celestial, half-fiend or whatever) could you combine that and the smite granted power for the cleric's Destruction domain in the same attack? Cheesy as hell, yes; but wouldn't they be different abilities and therefore stack? If so, OWWY! Level x2 to damage! EDIT: I'm usually the DM, and I actually hope this is not possible. |
| 3DJutsu03-02-07, 07:22 PM | Depends on what type of actions you are using to try and smite, if they are activated as part of an attack, then yes, they would go off at the same time. |
| DyloniusFunk03-02-07, 07:24 PM | DESTRUCTION DOMAIN Granted Power: You gain the smite power, the supernatural ability to make a single melee attack with a +4 bonus on attack rolls and a bonus on damage rolls equal to your cleric level (if you hit). You must declare the smite before making the attack. This ability is usable once per day. Smite Evil (Su): Once per day, a paladin may attempt to smite evil with one normal melee attack. She adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack roll and deals 1 extra point of damage per paladin level. If the paladin accidentally smites a creature that is not evil, the smite has no effect, but the ability is still used up for that day. They are differented activated abilities, and thus can be used togetehr on the same round. |

EDIT: I'm usually the DM, and I actually hope this is not possible. 1) Why do you think it'd be ouch? Note that the cleric's destruction domain is keyed off of cleric level, and the paladin's smite is keyed off of paladin level. So a cleric 6 / paladin 4 would deal +10 damage, while a paladin 10 or cleric 10 would deal... +10 damage. Wow, cheesy. 2) I get the impression it's legal, although it'd take a standard action to do it due to the supernatural limit on the Destruction domain. The paladin using his smite alone can in theory smite multiple times in a full attack, spending a smite attack on each hit in the sequence. The cleric couldn't hope to do this -- using a supernatural ability is a standard action, thus only one attack that round. 3) Before screaming "ouch" or declaring something's too strong, you should at least know what strong is (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=339) and what he looks like (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=482636). |
| Edymnion03-02-07, 10:43 PM | You're the DM. If you don't like it, just say no. There's no question of legality involved. The WotC Ninja Lawyers are not going to kick your door down if you tell somebody they can't do something. |
| runestar03-03-07, 01:49 AM | Smite is a supernatural ability, but I think activating it is part of the attack action. You do not spend a standard action activating smite, then wait for your next round to attack... 1) Why do you think it'd be ouch? So a cleric 6 / paladin 4 would deal +10 damage, while a paladin 10 or cleric 10 would deal... +10 damage. Wow, cheesy. It is not impossible for a cleric to take 2 domains which each grants the smite ability. Destruction and Orc domains come to mind. Champions of valour has a prc with the triple smite ability - basically, you spend 3 smite attempts, and if successful, you deal triple the smite damage.:) I guess it could be powerful if used in conjunction with abilities which multiply damage, like charging with a lance, but it seems quite tame to me... |
| shamus_the_daft03-03-07, 03:43 AM | yes it is legal and it is tame unless you do some thing like for example play a killoren(which grants smite as a racial ability based on total HD)half celestial paladin with spirited charge and a lance and the spell heroic charge(I think)whicha allows a full attack on a charge, lets assume level 20 if you smite on a charge and hit you would deal 1d8(average damage roughly 4)+str(lets say a 6 modifier)+60(from three smites)+any other aplicable bonuses(lets say a +5 lance) times 3 =225 on each attack made. now thats cheesy with certain other spells it gets stupid. but other wise its not particularly powerful but it is fun |
| SunTzuWarmaster03-03-07, 09:31 AM | If you don't allow it, the half-celestials won't ever take the destruction domain... oh noes! |
