| dave morbid10-11-04, 04:50 AM | The set-up: I'm playing a Paladin, (first one in a dozen years), of Sune. Now Sune's favored weapon for those that don't know is a whip, & I have always played my paladins (all 2 of them), as using their diety's favored weapon. Well my paladin finds himself helping his cousin build a small temple to his diety, (Selune), when we are besieged by a group of orcs. The rub: So I look at the DM, & in all seriousness say: "I grab my whip, and move to attack." Next thing I know I'm getting raucous laughter from the whole group. Now as they laugh, I find it it a little funny. Now I'm asking for extra XP. So as a side question, would you expect your DM to give you extra XP for unintentionally making him laugh for a good minute? |
| Prewa_Draconis10-11-04, 05:30 AM | I think your group is either just wierd, or they all have their minds in the gutter or something... cause I, personally, don't really see how that is funny. I would say that you shouldn't expect your DM to give you extra XPs for making him laugh, but if he enjoyed that statement so much then he'd be a cool DM by awarding "Comical Relief XP" At least... that's what my DM does. |

So as a side question, would you expect your DM to give you extra XP for unintentionally making him laugh for a good minute? Jeez.... D&D is a social game. These things are bound to happen. There's no reason to give experience for having a good time. have a good time period and experience shouldn't matter. If you asked for exp in my game for making me laugh.... i'd laugh again. |
| darczero10-11-04, 07:49 AM | Paladin wielding favored weapon of patron deity great roleplaying choice, even if that weapon is a whip (one of the deities in my homebrewed pantheon has the same). Making the DM laugh shouldn't grant XP. Your group probably has other thoughts than gaming on their mind. |
| EvilDuck10-11-04, 07:55 AM | Heh heh, our group's games frequently feature stuff pertaining to S&M. We fight a dominatrix about every other game, the druid walked into one of their clubs thinking it was a druid shop one day, and the ogre magic shop assistant ran after the elf assassin yelling, "Wait, you forgot your fuzzy handcuffs!" *waits to get warned for this post* |
| dave morbid10-11-04, 03:25 PM | Well knowing my DM, I know the laughter bout the whip was nothing sexual, just one of those things you'd never expect a paladin to say. The laughter = XP thing is a hold over from Toon the RPG, where you got XP, (or plot points as they were called), if you could make the DM break down laughing. But yeah I kind of figured shouldn’t expect the XP, though it doesn’t hurt to ask. |
| DM Zoc10-11-04, 04:19 PM | Shadowrun has a similar rule, where making people laugh by doing something in character grants a point of good karma. We've all held the rule over into D&D, and some of out characters build enormous reserves of good karma, even if the karma can't be used for anything. |
| Winternova10-11-04, 04:47 PM | I'm a proponent of comedic relief XP... I hand at least 500 xp worth of it every session, but my players tend to say and do some really weird things. |
| ImmortalBlueMage10-12-04, 07:24 PM | Well, that would illicit a laugh in my group, but only because we all remember when we first started playing and my friend James so big on using the whip (he's a huge Indiana Jones fanboy). The first fight he got into he ended up tripping himself with it. We didn't let him live that down for a long time. |
| Vintar10-13-04, 12:04 PM | You might ask your DM if you can use a special whip such as one with bits of razorsharp metal braided into it. I would use this as a 1d10 weapon that deals lethal damage - only thing is that everyone gets damage reduction equal to half their armor bonus (not rings of protection etc.). Just a thought - and I do think that that is really funny. :heehee |
| caeruleus10-13-04, 01:51 PM | I don't think you should expect XP for making the DM laugh, but I see nothing wrong with it if the DM wants to do so. A little while ago, our group encountered a githyanki and a githzerai in a fight. We ended up getting involved to help the githzerai. The githyanki would occasionally point to one of us and say, "Keep out of this, prime!" (For those who may not know, "prime" is what those who travel the planes call those who live on the Material Plane.) Having been called a "prime" a few times, I took a free action just before my attack to say, "Prepare to be factored!" Not everyone got the joke, but the DM loved it, and IIRC I got 50XP for it. Not much, but our DM liked giving us a little somthing for humor. |
| Sucineri10-13-04, 02:10 PM | I am also one that likes to grant bonus xp after a session..not 500xps worth just for making me laugh though. Maybe 50 here, 25 there. This reminds me of a rogue I played who only used whips and saps because he didn't like to be the cause pain or death. We came up against an undead and plant encounter and my rogue started hitting the plant with the sap because he had never fought an undead or a plant type before and my whole group OOC called ME an idiot. And they all claimed to be the best roleplayers..I considered it a victory for me. :) |
| dave morbid10-13-04, 04:07 PM | I should make it clear that the whip is not his only weapon, he just uses it for those less-than-lethal force needs. Still don't know if he's going to give me, any xp for the joke. Though now I don't care as he ok'd my Prc choice, & a feat I want. So I'll just count my blessings & move on. |
| Purkake10-14-04, 01:05 PM | You might ask your DM if you can use a special whip such as one with bits of razorsharp metal braided into it. Just a thought - and I do think that that is really funny. :heehee That is way overpowered. Whip dagger is 1d6 lethal and some would consider that overpowered. Your best bet is a whip with glass pieces in it, i can't remember the name but it also did 1d6 lethal damage. |
| Sucineri10-14-04, 01:35 PM | Or you could go with a scourge which is a shorter, multiheaded, bladed version of a whip. So..just kick the size up a couple notches (make it large..or would it be huge? And also adjust for damage) and there ya go! :P |
| dave morbid10-14-04, 04:37 PM | I think I'll just stick with my regular whip, as I find the whip dagger to be a most stupid weapon, & the other types of suggested whips wouldn't make sense for a paladin. |
