Last session I really didn't enjoy the game. I personally think that our group is too big, we've got six players and a wolf familiar. My character was a half orc wizard with combat based spells (sheild, mage armour, it seemed like a good idea at the time)

As we walk in on two orcs around a campfire, and my guy tries to talk to them and avoid conflict, The DM got annoyed at me, saying that I couldn't do that. Not that they call me names, or shout something about the treasure being theirs, I just couldn't do that. I would've asked why, but the Exp. hungry sorceror was getting impationt to the point of exposion.

After the combat, I aked what just happened, and he said it was my fault, because I had asked to be half orc, and no-one in the campaighn was supposed to speak half orc (we were using a HEAVILY butchered version of one of the board game adventures) despite the fact one of the other characters was a Doppelganger, and the Druid was a shifter, apparently because 'it was good for the storyline'. After the adventure I have to admit that I got slightly grumpy (read: understatement) and declared my character had died of heartliver disease, becuse 'he sucked, and you suck'. Not my finest hour by far.

Despite the complaints of the sorceror, I rolled up a new level one character. A human wizard who specialise in transmutation. Ixidor, the reality sculptor. He was based around using transmutation and illusion to get out of tight spots by intimidation, bluff and animate rope hijinx.

First five minutes of new adventure, we were attacked by hobgoblins while en route via coach to the main city. I cast message to find out the situation of the driver, and the rogue said he was still on the coach, but netted. I was about to cast unseen servant to grab the reins and take us off since we were all inside the coach, but the sorceror complained that we wanted the experience. So decided to cast enlarge person and try to intimidate the hobgoblins. Unfortunately, I forgot to exit the coach, and broke through the roof with my head. Then the sorc thought it a great idea to further enlarge me, thereby destroying the coach completely, and then again, making me about 60 foot tall. I asked the DM if this gave me any bonus to my intimidate check, and he told me that there was no bonus, becuaeit wasn't in the rules, despite being wrong about strength bonuses for enlarged persons mere seconds before.

I don't know if this is how it is supposed to go, but he frequently just says things like 'the king does this' and cuts off a route of adventure completely for no seemingly good reason, or complains when the characters get bored of making umpteen strength chacks to open coffins, and then when we ask why we are making all these checks when we have all day, he accuses the party of not being interested in anything but combat? what?

I really don't think I want to go to his next session, as I really don't enjoy his style of DMing and we tend to conflict which seems to drive the party sorc to the point of suicide. he seems guilty of a lot of the things like omnipotent DMPC's and 'railroading', but I am willing to accept that it is my behaviour causing him a problem. Am I just roleplaying badly and annoying the rest of the group? Either way I think I should probably find another group.

Cheers.
(And hats off to any peeps who read all of that. I realise that it's a whole big chunk of babbling)

can't stack enlarge persons. only one per customer at a time.

also for every size category larger than your target you are you get a +4 to intimidate. also you have to make strength check to break the wagon in order to keep growing. otherwise you stop growing without penalty. also it says quote:
"may make a strength check"
meaning that if you don't want to become bigger than the wagon you don't have to, you stop exapanding.

also you are entitled to a fortitude save to negate the enlarge person spell, hopefully they let you do that.

your problem is this: your party is full of munchkins and you aren't one. you can either show them up and make them cry, rules lawyer and maket hem cry, or quit. im a spiteful person so id do the first two. make a character that can just own all of them. then read the rulebooks thrice through and correct them when they try something they can't try. for instance that whole enlarge person BS. your sorcerer cheats, the text for the spell is clear as day. he is probably a chart player. which is essentially someone who only reads the charts and the list of wizard/sorcerer spells wihch should have never included a description of the spells.

EDIT: it's your fellow PCs and your DM. also never play a half-orc wizard... ever. and read up the rules on coup de grace and see how your sorcerer fairs ;)

Only play in-character. Continually ask the sorc what this strange "XP" thing is, whether it is a component to a spell, etc. If you get involved in a combat your character would not engage in, have him sit on the sidelines and conjure up some popcorn.

Once that gets boring, try talking to the DM about what you would like changed. Also maybe talk to the sorc player.

If that doesn't work, its new group time.

As we walk in on two orcs around a campfire, and my guy tries to talk to them and avoid conflict, The DM got annoyed at me, saying that I couldn't do that. Not that they call me names, or shout something about the treasure being theirs, I just couldn't do that.

Very bad DMing. Your character can speak orc and the npcs can speak orc, therefore (unless the npcs are hostile towards you to the point of attacking on sight (and given that it's a new character i doubt that very much)) you can speak the the npcs.

Again, it's the DM. If he doesn't want you to make characters that can speak orc then it is his job to make that clear before you start. He should have said no when you asked to be a haf-orc.

So the sorcerer is a roll-player. As a side-note, I would have awarded experience if you had used unseen servant, since you overcame the challenge of being ambushed by hobgoblins. You don't have to kill something to defeat it.

I don't know if this is how it is supposed to go, but he frequently just says things like 'the king does this' and cuts off a route of adventure completely for no seemingly good reason, or complains when the characters get bored of making umpteen strength chacks to open coffins, and then when we ask why we are making all these checks when we have all day, he accuses the party of not being interested in anything but combat? what?

Yeah, so he's an idiot.

Either way I think I should probably find another group.

Absolutely. You sound like a good player, and you don't deserve a DM like that.

It's totally you.

You are very bad at being a munchkin and following the DM's plots and you REALLY suck at killing monsters, which is the entire POINT of D&D, as the Sorceror player will tell you.

Your problems:

1. Negotiating with Monsters. Duh, they are monsters! Just picture them as a number of experience points - without brains or mouths or any way to communicate. That should make hacking them up easier.

2. Intimidating instead of rolling an attack. Umm, Intimidation doesn't inflict damage to the monsters, so quit wasting everyone's time and cast sleep or magic missile like a good little wizard.

3. Wrong Race/Class combo. Half-Orcs cannot be wizards. Half-Orcs can only be Barbarians, and MAYBE a rogue, as long as it's an evil, poison using rogue. You did much better with your second character, although specialization is lame and the DM should have disallowed it. Your wizard, in both cases, did have a long white beard and pointy hat, yes?

4. Improper Spell Selection. While the Half-Orc Wizard (ugh) had good spells, the second wizard did not. "Message"? "UNSEEN SERVANT"? What is WRONG with you? Do those spells do ANY damage? NO! Magic Missile! Ray of Frost! No WONDER the group hates you!

"intimidation, bluff and animate rope hijinx" made me throw up a little, in my mouth.

Get with the program and maybe that group will let you stay.

Hnah!

I think I'm maybe being abit harsh. He isn't really able to memorise the rulebook, cause he had dyslexia or something, but I wish he wouldn't say stuff like Enlarge person is completely asthetic without even looking. Maybe I'm expecting too much from reading stories about cool DM's on here.

The party rogue doppelganger is cool though. While he is a blatant powergamer, he is cool about most stuff. I actually knocked him off the top of the coach where he was sniping the hobgolbins from behind baggage.

DM: 'you hear a crunch next to you.'

Him: 'what was it?'

DM: 'Ixidors giant head'

Him: 'oh.'

*Then the sorc cast an illegal double enlarge-we didn't know it was illegal then*

Ixidor(to rogue): 'you might want to, uh, look out...'

CREEAK-VWOOSH!

Sixty foot Ixidor: 'intimidation check!'
*rollroll*
Rogue: 'wait, say something cool!'
Sixty foot Ixidor: 'Um... GREETINGS, FROM THE WORLDS BIGGEST WIZARD!'

After the battle, my sixty foot wizard had to push the remains of the cart out of the drow & hobgobin filled forest.

Knowing what kind of game you dont like makes you a steap ahead of a lot of people. Thinking that looking up a rule on occassion may be a good idea is another steap. Perhaps its time that you give the DMG a good read and run your own game.

What the hell? does the DM even read these books or what it seems like he should be fired from ever DMing again! well at least until he reads the BOOK you know the one Titled DMG... sorry but I've played with DMs that didn't know how to calculate a crit. So I know what your going through dude and I'd just find a new group to hang with and play the game.

Well okay, so your character is half orc who cannot speak orc? Well it could kinda be so if he grew up with the humans and never ever learnt his heritage, but still the DM should've like told you that.
Also its your DM not you so move on find a group better suited to Roleplaying not Rollplaying.

Other than that, it sounds like your DM needs to learn he's not a train conductor. Have you ever thought of offering to DM for the group? Even just a one-adventure deal can show him how to do better. Lead by example, I always say.

I think I've worked out that the party sorceror is a complete and utter ass. Whenever he hasn't got the chance to do anything, he'll look like he's going to die from boredom, and whenever it's his turn, he won't let anybody do anything, and just complains about everyone taking forever, which is usually because he won't be quiet. He is constantly inturupting the DM when he is trying to describe things. Exact quote from last night:

DM: you see a pale figu-
HIM: is it a skeleton?
Everyone else: He's just about to tell you.
DM: his clothes are ragg-
Him: what's his challenge rating?
DM:WTF?
Everyone else: Shut up.
DM: His skin is-
Him: is it a zombie? Can I see the picture?
Everyone else:*dies*

He complains of the rogue slowing everything up by making search checks, and it's usually him slowing the DM down because he's asking him completely retarded quastions about metamagic feats or why anyone would bother with ____?

Another jewel is he frequently looks up spells like summon Lv1, cannot find the creatures list for spider or octopus, then I have to find it for him, give it to him, manages to read either Spier:tiny or spider:collosus rather than the spider:small which I pointed out to him, complains that it's better/worse, and asks why anyone would bother with a spider because 'It's pointless really, if you think about it. It doesn't do anything. It doesn't even do poison damage against undead'. So he manages to hold up EVERYBODY else with stupid stuff like that, then declare it utterly useless, then complain and whine until somebody asks him in a less than polite way to stop.

He hates being outside of dungeons because you don't gain Exp. and he doesn't get to run around making a *** of himself opening all the traps.

Like another person said, I really think he should just go and buy neverwinter nights or something, he's a huge pain. he never knows what spells he has, or what his character sheet has, feats, items, and doesn't seem to care, because it's 'all about combat, really, if you think about it'

Sorry to rant.

Sleep is like a 1st level cloudkill. It 'kills' 2d4 HD of creatures (If you fall asleep on the battlefield, chances are, you're dead.)

Can't get Fireball at level 3. Must wait till level 5. And I didn't need to offer that advice, as the Fireball is the Holy Grail of spells, and every spellcaster automatically gets it - even loremasters (though they try to hide it by renaming it "Instantaneous Conflagration Sphere").

Interesting character idea. Nice. While your group is a little big, it doesn't sound like it should be much of a problem.

Not that they call me names, or shout something about the treasure being theirs, I just couldn't do that. *cough*Railroad!*cough* And tell the XP-hungry sorc to stick a rod of rulership up his portable hole the next time he tries to stop you from RPing.
Not my finest hour by far.
Did the doppelganger guy have the doppelganger LA? Which shifter are you referring to when you speak of the druid? There's the 3.0 PrC, which has been updated in CAdv and is now called the master of many forms, and there's the Eberron player race. Neither is that powerful. Your DM shouldn't have gotten all up in your grill for playing a half-orc. Clearly his lack of consideration for your skills was a mistake, so the problem would be on his end. You shouldn't have just let your char die though. He sounded cool.

Despite the complaints of the sorceror, I rolled up a new level one character. A human wizard who specialise in transmutation. Ixidor, the reality sculptor. He was based around using transmutation and illusion to get out of tight spots by intimidation, bluff and animate rope hijinx.
Can I join your group? I'll be Kamahl, the barbarian/battle sorcerer.

First five minutes of new adventure, we were attacked by hobgoblins while en route via coach to the main city. That sorc guy sounds like a real jerkass.

I think now that I may have been previously harsh on my DM. Last session (the sorc's finest hour) he swapped from seemingly making up the adventure on the spot, to a very cool well thought out adventure.

Since we were without a coach after the debute of the enlarge person spell, we found a hill on the plains outside the forest and camped there. the sorc on guard managed to fail two spot checks, and we had all our rations stolen. when he finally twigged, we ended up having to fight off seven goblins wihout spells. when we got our spells back, we found we had camped on the opening of a goblin cave, and our driver was captured and was also the only one with knowelege of how to get to middlemarch, our destination city.

when entering the dungeon, there were loads weak enemiesso that everyone got a look in, and the search checks were quick,, and the puzzles seemed conceivable and solvable. over the course of the cave-crawl, we discovered that they were being pushed out and starved by what sounded like undead, which gave us incentive to move quicker towards recapturing our guide/driver.

We discovered a very cool fighter who had been inflicted with lycanthropsy by the undead, and while searching, the party rogue set of a trap that infected him with the same disease. there followed some good roleplaying between my character, the fighter, the rogue, and the party cleric over how to solve this. We decided to hunt down the alchemist/wizard vampire who was lording the undead here. it was a really good maze-like crawl to his lair. we decided to split up much to he maligement of the sorc, who complained this was going to slow us down, and my extend spell feat and message spell selection finally came in handy.

When we found him, it was a really sweet and challenging boss battle. Our ranger tank was singled out by the vampire for enfeeblement, and he summoned bat swarms to keep the fighters at bay. I managed to get good use out of my spells, by colour spraying the swarms, and enlarging the lycan fighter. We found the wolfsbane, and we discovered from the vampires journal that he had a master somewhere in the same dungeon. the cleric and figher were determined to hunt him down, so everyone, even the sorc vowed we would take him down before he started his zombie invasion of a nearby town, as detailed in the journal. (we also needed a way back out, our previous entrance had caved in.) we called it a night then (it was 1 in the morning!)

my only complaints at all this time are that he has given us way too many magic items, which he says he now regrets, and that he still uses dues ex machina like M&M's, which cheapens the roleplaying for me.

I really like my new character, although the sorc has actually complained of my lack of offensive spells, and asked me why my character is even here, because 'He's pointless. he doesn't do anything, and he's just stealing Exp.' (his original character concept centered soley around getting dragon disiple as soon as possible (level three acording to him) and fulfilling some complete bull cliche' storyline around him being the chosen one of a dragon god) Considering I just politely let his questionable backstory and motives slide (he's also the only evil char, CE at that, and that was only so he could summon Feindish creatures). I get the feeling the sorc is just playing this because he cannot afford neverwinter nights. He even uses that in arguments with the DM. 'But in neverwinter nights...'

Now my problem is this: I was really annoyed at my DM previously, and he sees to have cleaned up his act and turned things around considerably. However, this seems to have provoked the sorc into being even more of a dick than usual. He really seems to drag the games down. But while I was contemplating moving groups before, everyone but him seems to have got themselves sorted out. Should I see about getting him kicked, or is there a chance he too can be turned around?

Bleah. Sorry for such a long post. I never seem to be able to make short posts. Ah well.

Cheers.

i think you should talk to the members of the group, if others are unhappy with the sorcs rollplay then get the one of you that knows him best to talk to him about his behavior and try to get him to change.

asking the DM if you can get xp for doing things other than killing (your group seems quite new) and point this out to the sorc.

failing this kick himout.

if you have a rules question then look it up, every player should have a coppy of the PHB, even if 1 or 2 people forget to bring them to the sessions.
