| lonewolfm09-07-04, 08:42 AM | My gaming group is calling my latest character overpowered and very cheesy. It is a second level dwarven psi warrior (3.5). It have good stats in wisdom, con, and strength. It decided on a two handed-greatsword build. The problem is they said I was unfair that I could do 30+ damage in one swing when I charged. First, I told them that with my limited power points that I could do this about once a day. (cast force shield, expansion, and the charged and used the deep crystal ability to add and extra 2d6 to the attack.) In the end I ended up doing 5d6 plus my strength bonus to the ogre we were fighting, almost dropping it in one hit (as it was previously engaged in combat). Second, I tried to explain to them that without that two round buff time my warrior would not even be as good as the party's fighter. Am I wrong to play such a character? ( I haven't even go to the point where I can take more powerful psi feats that will upgrade my character even more) |

However, it is a good idea to tone down your character to match the group. If everyone is equally overpowered, there's no problems, it's only when one character is overshadowing the rest. |

So tell them that you will make a cleric, and at level 3 you will be able to steam roll every encounter with low will save creatures by coup de graceing them. |
| General Dorsey09-07-04, 03:44 PM | I would say that you are not overpowered at all. However, if the DM is only throwing one encounter at you daily, then there is definately the perception that you may be. The DM needs to make sure that one character doesn't shine so bright the rest of the party is blinded by them. That being said, you may want to be careful about how much you put into your first attack. If you put all your eggs in one basket, and you fumble...you may not be able to recover. I wouldn't worry about it. At 3rd level, a paladin with 18 charisma can smite evil using power attack for 3 and spirited charge dealing 3d8+18 (not counting Strength), which can deal more than 30 damage. Without the smiting, he can still deal 3d8+9. Critical hits will be 4d8+24 (or +12 when not smiting). He can do this without expending any psionic or magic at all. In fact, he isn't even using a special mount, just a normal warhorse. There are many ways that clerics and wizards can also improve their abilities when taking a few rounds to prepare at low levels. Perhaps the DM needs to give you less time to prepare. |
| lonewolfm09-07-04, 04:27 PM | General Dorsey, the only reason we had time to prepare was because the ogre was already engaged in combat with a wandering paladin. (I fully agree and tried to tell them that the 2 round buff time is a huge risk and liability). Later in the day I was mugged by a giant that wanted to wrestle...... The party consists of a kobold soulknife, a human fighter, a klashtar (sp) kineticist, a rogue, and an evil elf paladin. The soulknife and paladin are both sub par so I think that that is the reason for the accusations. |
| General Dorsey09-07-04, 04:40 PM | So, The party consists of a kobold soulknife, a human fighter, a klashtar (sp) kineticist, a rogue, and an evil elf paladin. The soulknife and paladin are both sub par so I think that that is the reason for the accusations. And you are playing a second level dwarven psi warrior (3.5). The kobold soulknife is going to be subpar to begin with. Although kobolds are not the wimpiest creatures out there, the game designers didn't make them as powerful as the core races. This means he is starting behind already. If he makes poor choices, he will be further behind. A paladin that is not played well will not do well. They don't have the same level of versatility as four of the other classes in the group. He's going to need to make some important choices on how he wants his character to develop. With bonus feats and psionic abilities, you are going to be more versatile than the a couple others in the group. They just need to figure out what their niche is going to be. |
